Nitish Kumar sworn in as Bihar CM for 10th time, new NDA cabinet takes charge

Patna: Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for a record 10th term on Thursday, marking yet another milestone in his decades-long political career. The oath ceremony, held at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan, came a day after he was unanimously chosen as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislature party and formally staked claim to form the new government.

Alongside Kumar, 26 newly elected MLAs were inducted into the NDA cabinet. BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, reaffirming the BJP–JD(U) partnership at the core of the new government.

The grand swearing-in event saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP national president JP Nadda, and chief ministers of several NDA-ruled states. Gandhi Maidan—also the site of Kumar’s previous oath ceremonies in 2005, 2010 and 2015, and known for Jayaprakash Narayan’s historic call for “total revolution” in 1974—was packed for the occasion.

Kumar’s selection as NDA legislature party leader followed back-to-back meetings on Wednesday, during which he was first elected JD(U) legislature party chief before securing unanimous support from alliance partners.

Soon after the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the new ministers, expressing confidence in the coalition’s ability to deliver. “My best wishes to all those who have taken oath as Ministers in the Bihar Government. This is a wonderful team, with dedicated leaders who will take Bihar to new heights,” the Prime Minister wrote on X.

Trump signs key Bill to release Epstein files amid global scrutiny

Washington: In a major development that could reshape one of the world’s most controversial criminal scandals, US President Donald Trump has signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, directing the Department of Justice to publicly release all documents related to the investigation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The move ends months of resistance from the White House and comes after rising pressure from Epstein’s victims, lawmakers and civil rights groups in the United States.

The new law requires the Justice Department to publish, within 30 days, all records, communications and investigative files on Epstein — including material related to his death in a New York federal prison in 2019 — in a “searchable and downloadable” public database. The only permitted redactions concern victim identities or details tied to ongoing federal investigations; disclosures cannot be withheld on grounds of political sensitivity or reputational harm.

“I HAVE JUST SIGNED THE BILL TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!” Trump wrote in a lengthy message on the Truth Social platform. “As everyone knows, I asked Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, to pass this Bill in the House and Senate, respectively. Because of this request, the votes were almost unanimous in favor of passage,” he wrote.

“Perhaps the truth about these Democrats, and their associations with Jeffrey Epstein, will soon be revealed, because I have just signed the bill to release the Epstein files,” he added. He also claimed that Democrats had “used the Epstein issue” to divert attention from his administration’s work.

The Bill earlier cleared the US House of Representatives by a rare near-unanimous vote of 427–1 and passed the Senate without opposition — signalling an unusual moment of bipartisan agreement in Washington. Several leaders, however, cautioned the White House against using procedural delays or excessive redactions to block the release of sensitive information. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the administration must carry out the law “faithfully,” warning against “funny business” in withholding files the public has a right to see.

According to a report by Fox News, the demand for public disclosure intensified after Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee released three emails from Epstein’s estate that referenced Trump. In response, Republicans made public nearly 20,000 pages of Epstein-related documents on the same day.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with widespread social connections, was accused of trafficking underage girls and exploiting his influence to shield himself from accountability. His arrest in 2019 and subsequent death — officially ruled a suicide — intensified speculation that crucial elements of the case had been obscured or ignored.

With the new law now in effect, families of victims and observers around the world are looking to see whether the forthcoming disclosures bring long-awaited transparency — or deepen questions about one of the most troubling scandals in recent memory.

US approves USD47.1mln sale of Excalibur Precision Projectiles to India

WASHINGTON: The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to India involving Excalibur projectiles and related equipment valued at USD 47.1 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has submitted the necessary certification to Congress.

According to the proposal, India has sought to purchase up to 216 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles. The package also includes several non-MDE items such as ancillary equipment, Portable Electronic Fire Control Systems with Improved Platform Integration Kits, primers, propellant charges, technical data, repair and return services, US Government technical assistance, and other logistics and program support elements. The total estimated cost remains USD 47.1 million, according to a DSCA release.

The DSCA stated that the sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the strategic partnership with India, a key defense partner that contributes significantly to political stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.

The proposed acquisition is expected to enhance India’s ability to address current and future threats by equipping its brigades with improved precision strike capability. The DSCA noted that India is well-positioned to integrate these systems into its armed forces and that the sale will not affect the region’s basic military balance.

RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia, has been identified as the principal contractor. The US government has not reported any offset arrangements at this stage, with such agreements to be determined later between India and the contractor. The implementation of the sale is not expected to require additional US government or contractor personnel in India.
