Nine killed after truck crashes into bus in Karnataka

Chitradurga: Nine people lost their lives in a severe road accident in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district early Thursday after a speeding truck collided head-on with a sleeper bus, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Police officials said most of the victims were trapped inside the burning bus and died at the scene.

The private bus was travelling with 32 passengers on board to Gokarna when the truck reportedly crossed the central divider and rammed into it. The impact was so intense that the bus was engulfed in flames within moments. Preliminary reports indicate that the truck driver, identified as Kuldeep, was among the deceased.

Inspector General of Police (East Zone) Ravikanthe Gowda said that eight bus passengers and the truck driver have been confirmed dead so far. Twelve others sustained injuries, with nine admitted to a hospital in Sira and three shifted to Tumakuru for treatment. One patient with critical burn injuries was transferred to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. The remaining injured passengers are stated to be out of danger.

According to the bus driver, Rafiq, who survived the crash, the truck appeared to be travelling at high speed when it crossed the divider. He said he attempted to control the bus but could not prevent the collision. Many passengers reportedly escaped by jumping out of the vehicle as the fire spread.

Police said early investigation suggests that the truck may have been carrying diesel. Forensic procedures, including DNA testing, are being undertaken to formally identify the victims, some of whom were severely burnt. Authorities are contacting families using details from online ticket bookings.

A second bus carrying 42 schoolchildren, travelling on the same route, narrowly avoided involvement in the crash. Officials said the school bus swerved off the road while trying to avoid the burning vehicle and none of the children were injured. The driver’s statement will be recorded as part of the investigation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. An ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased person, and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Leaders across Karnataka also expressed grief. Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar extended condolences and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while state BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa called the incident a horrific tragedy.

Police teams, fire services, and medical responders worked through the morning to control the blaze, rescue passengers, and move the injured to hospitals. A detailed inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether speeding or mechanical failure contributed to the tragedy.

Authorities appealed to the public to avoid speculation until the investigation is complete and urged highway motorists to exercise caution, particularly on high-speed stretches.

Ashwini Vaishnaw thanks Rahul Gandhi for praising Foxconn job creation

New Delhi: Breaking from routine political exchanges, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday expressed appreciation for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the latter acknowledged large-scale job creation at a Foxconn facility in Karnataka.

In a post on X, Vaishnaw said the leader of the Opposition had recognised the “success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ programme,” referring to the expansion of manufacturing employment in the state.

Rahul had earlier shared a media report titled ‘Foxconn hires 30k staff at new, women-led unit’, using it to underline the need for dignified employment and inclusive growth. In his post on X, he highlighted the speed and scale of hiring at the facility, writing: “30,000 staff hired in just eight-nine months – the fastest factory ramp-up seen in India so far. This is not just a statistic. It is transformative job creation. What makes it even more powerful is that the unit is largely women-led, with around 80% women, most aged 19-24, and for many, this is their first job.”

He further said Karnataka was demonstrating how the right industrial ecosystem can enable manufacturing growth at scale, adding:
“Karnataka is setting an example by creating an ecosystem where manufacturing can grow at this scale and speed. This is the India we must build: jobs with dignity, and opportunities for all.”

According to the report cited by Gandhi, Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (Foxconn) has hired nearly 30,000 workers at its new iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, within a span of eight to nine months. The development is being described as the fastest factory ramp-up ever recorded in India.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Begins Commercial Operations

Mumbai: Christmas morning marked a major milestone for India’s aviation sector as the Navi Mumbai International Airport officially commenced commercial operations, opening a new chapter in air connectivity for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The long-awaited greenfield airport welcomed its first passenger flight, signalling the start of phased operations after years of planning and construction.

The inaugural arrival was an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru, which touched down at 8 am and received a traditional water cannon salute, a ceremonial gesture reserved for landmark aviation moments. Festive scenes unfolded ahead of the landing as airline staff marked the occasion with customary celebrations, blending aviation tradition with cultural rituals.

Soon after the historic arrival, the airport witnessed its first departure when an IndiGo flight bound for Hyderabad took off at 8:40 am, formally establishing two-way commercial movement from the new aviation hub.

Developed through a public-private partnership between Adani Airports Holdings and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra, the airport has been designed to cater to a broad spectrum of travellers, including first-time flyers, business commuters and frequent fliers.

Architecturally inspired by India’s national flower, the lotus, the terminal reflects a blend of cultural symbolism, modern design and sustainability-focused features. After nearly eight years of development, including two years affected by the pandemic, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is now set to emerge as a key aviation gateway, strengthening regional connectivity and supporting the future growth of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Thai-Cambodia conflict: India condemns demolition of Hindu deity

New Delhi: India on Wednesday strongly criticised the reported destruction of a Hindu deity in Cambodia, allegedly carried out by the Thai military amid continuing hostilities between the two neighbouring countries.

The issue drew wider attention after videos circulated online showing a Vishnu statue being brought down with heavy machinery. According to a spokesperson for Preah Vihear, the statue stood within Cambodian territory in the An Ses area. He said the structure, which was erected in 2014, was demolished on Monday at a location roughly 100 metres from the Thailand–Cambodia border.

Responding to media queries, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Hindu and Buddhist deities are “deeply revered” by communities across the region and form part of a “shared civilisational heritage”.

In a statement, he said: “We have seen reports on the demolition of a statue of a Hindu religious deity, built in recent times, and located in an area affected by the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered and worshipped by people across the region, as part of our shared civilizational heritage. Notwithstanding territorial claims, such disrespectful acts hurt the sentiments of followers around the world, and should not take place.”

India also called on both sides to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing the need to prevent further loss of life and damage to civilian property. Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia first broke out in July and, despite a ceasefire mediated by US President Donald Trump, hostilities resumed earlier this month.
