Constitution goes multilingual milestone as President releases Santhali edition at Rashtrapati Bhavan

New Delhi: In a landmark step towards linguistic inclusion and constitutional accessibility, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, released the Constitution of India in the Santhali language at a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 25, 2025. The edition has been published in the Ol Chiki script, enabling Santhali-speaking citizens to read and understand the Constitution in their own language.

The event was attended by Vice President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with senior officials and representatives from the legal and cultural sectors.

The release holds special significance as it coincides with the centenary year of the Ol Chiki script, the writing system developed specifically for the Santhali language. The initiative reflects a broader effort to promote linguistic diversity while strengthening democratic participation among tribal and indigenous communities.

Santhali, recognised as one of India’s ancient living languages, was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution through the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act in 2003. It is spoken widely across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar, forming a vital part of the country’s cultural and linguistic heritage.

The availability of the Constitution in Santhali is expected to deepen constitutional awareness and civic understanding among Santhali-speaking populations. It also reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring that foundational legal texts are accessible to citizens across linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The release marks another step in the ongoing process of making constitutional knowledge more inclusive, aligning language preservation with democratic empowerment.

Odisha farmers make export breakthrough as fresh produce reaches Dubai market

Bhubaneswar: In a significant milestone for Odisha’s agriculture sector, farmers from Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts have successfully exported 1,000 kg of fresh produce to Dubai through Biju Patnaik International Airport, establishing the state’s first organised and direct export linkage between farmer collectives and an international market.

The consignment, dispatched on Wednesday, comprised garlic and French beans, marking their first-ever export from Odisha, along with baby potatoes, ivy gourd, pointed gourd and papaya. The produce was sourced from members of Farmer Producer Organisations, reflecting the increasing participation of small and marginal farmers in structured global agri-trade.

The export was facilitated under the Promotion and Stabilization of Farmer Producer Organisations project, implemented by Palladium Consulting India Pvt Ltd with support from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, along with backing from the Gates Foundation. As part of the initiative, agri-business startup Villa Mart Private Limited was enabled to connect farmer-led institutions with overseas buyers.

Palladium provided incubation and technical support to Villa Mart, covering critical aspects such as aggregation of produce, export licensing, certification, quality assurance and compliance with international regulatory norms. This end-to-end coordination ensured that documentation, quality checks and traceability requirements were met seamlessly, enabling the smooth movement of fresh produce to a global destination.
The produce was aggregated from farmers in the economically backward districts of Kalahandi and Nabarangpur, with stringent quality control measures adopted to align with international standards. The shipment is being viewed as a pilot exercise aimed at creating sustained export pathways for Odisha’s horticultural produce.

The Directorate of Horticulture played a key role by facilitating farmer participation and coordinating logistics. The development coincides with the state government’s efforts to draft a new Agri Export Policy, which is expected to focus on deeper global market integration, structured private-sector participation and improved income opportunities for farmers.

Senior officials from the agriculture department, along with representatives from Villa Mart and Palladium, were present at the time of dispatch, highlighting the collaborative framework that enabled the export and signalling Odisha’s growing readiness to compete in international agricultural markets.

Top Maoist leader killed, Amit Saha says Odisha close to become free from naxalism

Bhubaneswar: Senior Maoist leader Ganesh Uike, one of the most wanted insurgent commanders carrying a bounty of Rs 1.1 crore, was killed along with five others in a major anti-Naxal operation in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Thursday, a development that Union Home Minister Amit Shah described as a significant breakthrough bringing the state to the threshold of becoming completely free from Naxalism.

According to security officials, the encounter took place during a coordinated operation launched on the basis of specific intelligence about the presence of armed Maoist cadres in the forested terrain of Kandhamal. The gun battle began late Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning. Arms, ammunition, and other materials were recovered from the site.

Uike, a Central Committee Member of the CPI (Maoist) and the head of the organisation’s Odisha operations, had long been associated with planning and executing violent attacks targeting security personnel and civilians. His killing marks one of the most significant blows to the Maoist network in Odisha in recent years.

Reacting to the development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the breakthrough brings Odisha close to being declared free from Naxalism. In a message posted on X, Shah stated that the elimination of the six Maoists, including Uike, represents “another major breakthrough” and reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicate Naxalism nationwide by March 31, 2026. He added that Odisha now “stands at the threshold of becoming completely free from Naxalism.”

According to Odisha Police, the operation was jointly carried out by the Special Operations Group, the Special Intelligence Wing, district police units, CRPF and BSF personnel. In a post on X, the police stated that six CPI (Maoist) cadres were neutralised and urged remaining Maoists to surrender under the government’s rehabilitation policy, reaffirming the goal of achieving a Left-Wing Extremism–free Odisha before March 2026.

Once among the states most affected by Maoist insurgency, Odisha has in recent years recorded a sharp decline in violent incidents due to sustained security pressure, improved intelligence coordination, and development initiatives in remote tribal regions. Officials said the Kandhamal operation underscores the shrinking operational space for Maoist groups and the growing impact of coordinated counter-insurgency measures.

With the neutralisation of key Maoist leadership figures like Uike, authorities believe Odisha is now closer than ever to ending militant activity linked to Left-Wing Extremism, aligning with the Centre’s national objective of eliminating the movement within the announced timeline.
