Defence Ministry signs Rs 1,950 crore deal with BEL for indigenous mountain radars

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a capital acquisition contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two mountain radars for the Indian Air Force at an estimated cost of Rs 1,950 crore.

The agreement falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) category. Officials from the ministry and BEL were present during the signing ceremony in New Delhi.

The mountain radar system has been designed and developed indigenously by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. BEL will undertake its manufacturing, the ministry said in a release.

Officials indicated that the deployment of these radars will enhance air defence capabilities and improve surveillance in mountainous regions. They also stated that the project supports efforts to strengthen domestic defence production and reduce reliance on foreign systems.

The procurement aligns with the government’s push to promote indigenous capability development under initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

Govrnment terms Dubey’s remarks on Biju Patnaik unacceptable

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Tuesday condemned BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s remarks on former State Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, stating that the comments were unacceptable and had hurt public sentiment.

Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the government had taken note of the statement. In a post on X, Harichandan clarified that the remarks reflected Dubey’s personal views and did not represent the official position of the State government.

He added that the comments had caused anguish, including to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Harichandan urged elected representatives to maintain restraint in public discourse. He stated that remarks concerning Biju Patnaik, a widely respected figure in Odisha, should be made with responsibility.

He also warned against politicising the issue, noting that it could undermine the legacy of the former chief minister.

The issue also resonated in the Odisha Assembly. Members of the BJD, Congress, and CPI(M) staged a protest inside the House and demanded an unconditional apology from Dubey. The protest led to repeated slogan shouting and disrupted proceedings.

Soon after the House assembled for Question Hour at 10:30 am, Opposition members entered the Well of the House and raised slogans against the state government over its silence on the issue.

Amid the disruption, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the proceedings till 11:30 am.

Eight killed in stampede at Sheetla Mata temple in Nalanda

Overcrowding during weekly religious gathering at Sheetla Mata temple triggers deadly chaos, with survivors alleging poor crowd control and delayed administrative response

At least eight women have been killed and several others injured in a stampede that broke out during a religious gathering at Maa Sheetla Mandir in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Tuesday morning.

The incident reportedly occurred at the temple located in Maghra village, where a large number of devotees had assembled for weekly rituals, leading to severe overcrowding within the premises. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as people rushed to escape the crush, resulting in several being trampled.

Bihar Sharif Assistant Superintendent of Police Noorul Haque reportedly confirmed the fatalities, stating that police and district administration teams reached the site soon after the incident and initiated rescue operations. The exact cause of the stampede is yet to be officially determined, though authorities acknowledged an unusually heavy turnout of devotees.

The gathering coincided with a weekly fair at the temple, which is known to attract significant crowds, especially on Tuesdays considered auspicious for worship of Sheetla Mata. However, preliminary accounts from those present have pointed to alleged gaps in crowd management and inadequate deployment of security personnel.

Some devotees claimed that the situation spiralled out of control due to mismanagement. Mamata Devi, who had travelled from Patna, said the temple is typically crowded on Tuesdays but the scale of the rush was overwhelming this time. Another devotee recounted how members of her group got separated in the chaos as people struggled to find space and safety.

Emergency services, including ambulances, were rushed to the spot, and the injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities. Media reports indicate that the death toll could rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns over crowd control measures at religious gatherings in the state, particularly at sites that regularly witness large footfall during local fairs and rituals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed pain over the loss of lives and extending condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident. He has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased individual and ₹50,000 to those who sustained injuries.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the state government would extend all possible assistance to those affected.

Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the circumstances leading to the stampede and assess whether lapses in planning or execution contributed to the loss of lives.

SCB fire tragedy: Opposition submits memorandum, seeks minister’s resignation

Bhubaneswar: Intensifying its attack over the tragic fire incident at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, the opposition in Odisha on Monday submitted a joint memorandum to Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati.

The opposition parties also demanded the immediate resignation of the State health minister.

Leaders from major opposition parties, including BJD and Congress, held the government accountable for the incident, alleging serious lapses in safety measures and administrative negligence that led to the loss of 13 patients in the Trauma Care ICU fire.

The joint memorandum outlined a series of demands, including a judicial probe into the incident under the supervision of a High Court judge, immediate action against those responsible, and a comprehensive audit of fire safety systems in all government and private hospitals across the State, Odisha Congress said in a post on X.

The opposition further sought compensation of at least Rs 1 crore for each deceased patient’s family, along with a government job for one eligible member from each affected household. For the injured, free and high-quality medical treatment, along with financial assistance, was also demanded.

The memorandum submission follows a massive protest staged by multiple opposition parties near the State Assembly, where leaders condemned what they described as “inexcusable negligence” and systemic failure on the part of the government.

The issue has triggered sharp political reactions, with the opposition warning of intensified statewide agitation if their demands are not addressed promptly.

The SCB fire tragedy has also disrupted the Assembly, as opposition members continue to press for accountability and immediate corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Trump signals flexible exit as Iran War intensifies

US narrows military objectives while tensions escalate across West Asia, with conflicting claims, volatile oil prices, and fresh regional flashpoints complicating diplomatic resolution efforts.

The United States may scale back its military campaign against Iran without securing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, signalling a potential shift in Washington’s war strategy as the conflict enters its fifth week.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, citing senior administration officials, US President Donald Trump has indicated willingness to wind down hostilities once key objectives such as weakening Iran’s naval capabilities and reducing its missile stockpiles are achieved. The move reflects concerns that forcing open the critical oil transit route could prolong the conflict beyond a projected four-to-six-week timeline.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments, has remained largely disrupted following Iranian retaliation to US-Israeli strikes. The closure has driven global energy prices sharply upward, with crude oil earlier nearing USD 116 per barrel, close to wartime highs.

However, oil markets showed signs of cautious stabilisation on Tuesday as investors balanced expectations of a possible de-escalation with ongoing supply risks. Brent crude futures for May edged up 18 cents, or 0.16%, to USD 112.96 per barrel after earlier slipping by around 1% during trading. The May contract, set to expire Tuesday, saw limited movement, while the more actively traded June contract stood lower at USD 107.10 per barrel, reflecting uncertainty over the conflict’s trajectory and its impact on supply chains.

Despite the economic implications, the White House has suggested that reopening the strait is not central to its immediate war aims. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that ensuring safe passage for oil tankers is not among the “core objectives” of the ongoing operation. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio maintained that the route would eventually reopen either through Iranian compliance with international norms or via coordinated international intervention.

Iran, meanwhile, has continued to threaten commercial shipping routes, although it has reportedly allowed limited passage for vessels from certain allied nations, including India. The disruption has significantly curtailed global oil flows, intensifying pressure on international markets.

Adding to the uncertainty, Tehran has firmly denied engaging in any negotiations with Washington. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that while proposals have been conveyed through intermediaries, including Pakistan, Iran remains focused solely on resisting what it describes as ongoing US aggression. His remarks directly contradict Trump’s assertion that peace talks were progressing positively.

On the battlefield, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the conflict has crossed its midpoint, citing significant damage to Iran’s missile infrastructure and nuclear programme. In an interview with US media company Newsmax, Netanyahu said the coordinated US-Irsarl military attack has “degraded” Iran’s missile capability as they eliminated key nuclear scientists and destroyed factories.

Regional tensions further escalated as Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged Saudi Arabia to expel US forces, framing them as destabilising actors in the region. His statement underscores the widening geopolitical fault lines emerging from the conflict.

Separately, the Pentagon dismissed as “entirely false” a report alleging that a broker linked to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth attempted to make pre-war investments in defence firms. Officials have demanded a retraction, calling the claims baseless and misleading.

In another concerning development, a Kuwaiti oil tanker was reportedly struck while anchored at Dubai port, triggering a fire and raising fears of a potential oil spill. While no casualties have been reported, emergency teams are working to contain the situation as investigations continue into the suspected Iranian attack.

As military, economic, and diplomatic pressures converge, the trajectory of the Iran conflict remains uncertain, with shifting strategies, fluctuating oil markets, and competing narratives complicating prospects for a swift resolution.
