Odisha unveils clean energy roadmap with AgriPV, battery storage initiatives

Bhubaneswar: Odisha on Saturday unveiled a series of clean energy initiatives aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption, strengthening energy security, and promoting sustainable development across the state.

The initiatives were launched under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and include the Odisha State Energy Action Plan, the AgriPV roadmap, Wind Resource Assessment Masts, and a 125 MW/500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System project.

The announcements were made during a conclave on AgriPV organised by GRIDCO, Vasudha Foundation, and the Energy Department at a city hotel in Bhubaneswar.

Speaking at the event, Singh Deo delivered the keynote address, highlighting the state’s commitment to integrating agriculture with renewable energy to support climate-resilient growth.

Describing the theme, “Scaling AgriPV in Odisha for Climate-Resilient Growth,” as more than a slogan, he said it reflects Odisha’s resolve to empower farmers, enhance livelihoods, and advance its renewable energy mission.

He noted that the convergence of agriculture and clean energy can create a sustainable development model that supports both economic growth and environmental goals.

Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Vishal Kumar Dev, outlined Odisha’s broader strategy for energy transition. He highlighted the state’s focus on renewable energy expansion, energy storage, wind resource assessment, and long-term energy planning.

According to officials, the initiatives are designed to strengthen energy infrastructure while promoting innovation and sustainability.

The launch of the AgriPV roadmap is expected to encourage the integration of solar power generation with agricultural activities, helping farmers benefit from both energy production and agricultural output.

The state government also inaugurated Wind Resource Assessment Masts to support future wind energy development and to advance plans for the 125 MW/500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System project, aimed at improving grid reliability and energy management.

Separately, the deputy chief minister flagged off the “Udaya Yatra” of AVAADA Energy at the Mayfair Convention.

Describing it as another step towards Odisha’s renewable energy future, Singh Deo said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable growth, community empowerment, and clean energy-led development.

With these measures, Odisha is seeking to strengthen its renewable energy ecosystem while supporting farmers, enhancing energy security, and advancing its vision of sustainable and inclusive growth.

Cockroach Janta Party protest draws massive crowd at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: Hundreds of students and young people from across India gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday for a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led online movement seeking accountability over alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests, including NEET and CBSE.

Held under heavy security, the demonstration marked the CJP’s first major on-ground mobilisation after gaining traction on social media in recent weeks. Protesters demanded reforms in the education system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of examination mismanagement and paper leak controversies.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who recently returned from the United States to participate in the mobilisation, confirmed that Delhi Police had granted permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar.

In a statement, the organisation said supporters had been asked to head directly to the protest venue instead of assembling near Parliament Street Police Station, after police officials met Dipke upon his arrival in Delhi.

Describing the campaign as a peaceful constitutional movement, Dipke repeatedly urged participants to remain non-violent and follow democratic means of protest.

“How long will we wait for someone else to come, raise their voice and save us?” Dipke said in a video appeal ahead of the gathering, urging supporters to unite for what he described as the future of Indian students.

Speaking at the protest site, Dipke highlighted the turnout and said the mobilisation had disproved criticism that the movement would remain confined to social media. “They said cockroaches would never come on the ground,” he remarked while addressing supporters.

The protest drew participants from several states, many of whom said they travelled at their own expense to join the demonstration. Several students cited frustration over alleged examination irregularities, particularly surrounding NEET and CBSE assessments, saying they wanted greater transparency and accountability in the system.

The movement, which began as a satirical online platform, has increasingly positioned itself as a youth-driven political and civic campaign. Its supporters say it has become a voice for students frustrated with recurring controversies around examinations and recruitment processes.

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk extended support to the protest and joined the mobilisation. Earlier, Wangchuk had stated that he would undertake a six-week fast if Dipke were arrested. Both leaders repeatedly stressed that the protest should remain peaceful and constitutional.

The demonstration also drew support from political figures across ideological lines. CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya joined the protest at Jantar Mantar, while NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar backed the agitation, saying the participation reflected growing resentment among young people over alleged examination-related irregularities and government policies affecting students.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police detained six individuals during the protest as a preventive measure after receiving inputs about possible tensions between supporters and opponents of the movement.

Officials said the detentions were carried out to avoid any confrontation and ensure law and order near the protest venue. According to police, those taken into custody were allegedly attempting to create disturbances near the demonstration site.

Authorities said the protest concluded peacefully without any major untoward incident.

Indian Army officer Major Abhilasha Barak receives UN Military Gender Advocate Award 2025

New Delhi: India’s Major Abhilasha Barak has been honoured with the 2025 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for her efforts to advance gender equality and community engagement during a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

The award was presented on Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York. Germany’s Inspector Stephanie König also received the 2025 UN Woman Police Officer of the Year Award.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised both officers for their contributions to peacekeeping operations and their commitment to empowering women and vulnerable communities.

Major Barak is currently serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). She is deployed as the Engagement Team Commander and Gender Focal Point within the Indian Battalion.

According to Guterres, Major Barak has played a key role in ensuring that peacekeeping activities address the needs of women and vulnerable groups in conflict-affected areas.

As a frontline commander, she has engaged with thousands of women and girls through programmes focused on vocational training, education, and healthcare. Her initiatives have helped strengthen trust between peacekeepers and local communities while creating opportunities for dialogue and cooperation.

In a statement, the UN chief also highlighted her efforts in supporting early-warning networks that enhance the mission’s ability to protect civilians.

Guterres said Major Barak’s work demonstrates the importance of UNIFIL’s presence in local communities and its positive impact on the lives of women and girls, even under difficult circumstances.

Describing her as a role model, he commended her dedication to service and contribution to international peacekeeping efforts.

The recognition places Major Barak among a select group of peacekeepers honoured by the United Nations for promoting gender inclusion and strengthening community engagement in conflict zones.

India’s Indonesia Open challenge ends after Hariharan-Arjun fall in quarter-finals

New Delhi: India’s campaign at the Indonesia Open 2026 came to a close on Friday after men’s doubles pair Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin.

The Indian duo, ranked 30th in the world, went down 21-12, 21-10 against the eighth-ranked Malaysian pair in a match that lasted just 32 minutes in Jakarta, according to olympics.com.

Despite the defeat, the Indian combination leaves Jakarta with several positives after producing one of its best runs at a BWF Super 1000 event this season.

The pair began their campaign with a notable win over Malaysia’s Tan Wee Kiong, the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist, and Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub. They followed it up with another impressive result by defeating higher-ranked Malaysians Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing to secure a place in the last eight.

Hariharan and Arjun ultimately emerged as India’s last remaining contenders in the tournament after the country’s singles challenge ended a day earlier.

PV Sindhu and Ayush Shetty exited in the second round, while Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy suffered first-round defeats.

India’s leading men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also endured an early exit. Fresh from their Singapore Open triumph, the former world No. 1 duo were forced to retire from their opening-round match after Satwiksairaj sustained a right shoulder injury.

With the Indonesia Open concluded, Indian shuttlers will now shift their focus to the Australian Open BWF Super 500 tournament, scheduled to begin next week.

Modi launches development projects in Gujarat and Daman

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated, dedicated, and laid the foundation stones for a series of development projects in Gujarat and Daman, stressing sustainable growth, infrastructure expansion, and inclusive development.

Addressing a public gathering in Surat, Modi thanked the people of Gujarat for their continued support and described the recent local body election results as a mandate for greater public service.

He said the vision of a developed Gujarat and a developed India could be achieved only through the progress of every village, district, and city.

On World Environment Day, the PM highlighted Surat’s transformation from a city once affected by a plague outbreak to one known nationally for cleanliness. He praised the collective efforts of citizens, public representatives, and officials in driving that change.

Modi said Surat has emerged as a model for balancing industrial growth with environmental sustainability. He pointed to initiatives such as wastewater recycling for industrial use, the waste-to-wealth movement, and the approved Tapi Barrage Project. He also highlighted plans for electric mobility, metro expansion, and green steel production in the Hazira industrial region using renewable energy.

Referring to global challenges such as the pandemic, international conflicts, and energy disruptions, Modi said India had demonstrated resilience during a difficult decade. He noted that Gujarat contributes nearly one-fifth of the country’s renewable energy capacity and is well positioned to lead emerging sectors such as green hydrogen and green ammonia, according to an official statement.

Modi also underscored the importance of major infrastructure projects, including the Dedicated Freight Corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train, and the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. He said these initiatives would strengthen industry, trade, and connectivity across the region, including tribal areas.

Modi further inaugurated a new ESIC hospital in Surat, saying it would improve healthcare access for workers and migrant families.

Later in the day, the prime minister inaugurated, dedicated, and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth around Rs 2,970 crore in Daman.

He described Daman as a “Mini India” and praised the pace of development across Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The projects cover sectors such as connectivity, healthcare, education, tourism, and urban infrastructure.

Highlighting India’s economic performance, Modi cited the country’s 7.8% GDP growth in the final quarter and attributed it to infrastructure investment and welfare-focused reforms.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, he lauded Diu for powering all government buildings through solar energy. He also encouraged wider adoption of rooftop solar systems and environmental conservation initiatives.

The PM said major projects such as Namo Airport, the Damanganga bridge, and Transport Nagar would boost connectivity, trade, and logistics while strengthening the region’s long-term growth prospects.

He also outlined the government’s focus on healthcare, education, tourism, and skill development. Modi highlighted the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the expansion of medical infrastructure, and the establishment of new educational institutions, including a National Institute of Fashion Technology campus.

Emphasising opportunities for youth, he said specialised training in sectors such as drones, information technology, and renewable energy would help prepare India’s future workforce.

Modi also highlighted the success of initiatives such as Khelo India and tourism campaigns that are promoting local culture, heritage, and economic activity.

Concluding his address, Modi expressed confidence in the capabilities of the country’s youth, farmers, and entrepreneurs and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to supporting the region’s continued development.

Praggnanandhaa scripts stunning comeback to clinch Norway Chess 2026 crown

New Delhi: India’s R Praggnanandhaa completed a remarkable turnaround to win the prestigious Norway Chess 2026 title after defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round in Oslo on Friday.

Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian player to win Norway Chess, one of the sport’s most respected events.

The triumph marks the 20-year-old grandmaster’s first tournament victory of the year. More importantly, it caps an extraordinary late surge after a difficult phase in the competition, according to reports.

Praggnanandhaa entered the closing stages with momentum on his side. After suffering two consecutive defeats earlier in the event, he bounced back with four straight classical victories. His winning run included triumphs over Alireza Firouzja, world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning world champion D. Gukesh, and finally Keymer.

The Indian star also achieved a notable feat by defeating Carlsen twice during the tournament.

Just days earlier, Praggnanandhaa had found himself near the bottom of the standings. However, a string of strong performances pushed him back into title contention and eventually to the top of the leaderboard.

His championship hopes received an additional boost when overnight leader Wesley So drew his final-round classical game against Firouzja. The result ended both players’ chances of securing the title.

Carlsen ended a disappointing campaign on a positive note by beating Gukesh in the final round. The world champion finished at the bottom of the standings.

In the women’s tournament, Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva had already secured the title before the final round. She lost her last game to China’s Ju Wenjun but still finished on top with 16.5 points.

China’s Zhu Jiner defeated India’s Koneru Humpy to claim second place with 16 points. Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk secured third spot after overcoming India’s Divya Deshmukh in the final round.
