Glasgow: Ahmedabad has officially been selected to host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, marking India’s return to the global sporting stage after hosting the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. The decision was made during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, where delegates representing 74 nations and territories unanimously backed India’s bid.
Following the announcement, the assembly hall transformed into a celebration of Indian culture. A vibrant performance featuring 20 Garba dancers accompanied by thirty energetic dhol players drew applause, symbolizing Gujarat’s festive spirit and offering a preview of the cultural richness athletes and spectators can anticipate in 2030.
Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare said the decision represents an exciting new phase for the movement.
“This marks the beginning of a revitalised era for the Commonwealth Games. With Glasgow 2026 setting the tone, we now look ahead to Amdavad 2030 – an edition that will honour a century of Commonwealth sport. India brings unmatched passion, a youthful population, cultural depth, and enormous potential for growth. Interest in hosting beyond 2030 is already strong, giving us confidence for the next chapter.”
The 2030 Games are expected to include 15 to 17 sports, with the final lineup being shaped in consultation with Commonwealth Sport and international sporting bodies to ensure a programme that resonates locally while attracting global attention.
Commonwealth Games Association of India President Dr. PT Usha expressed gratitude and pride.
“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress,” she said.
