PM Modi pays tribute to Sardar Patel, calls Statue of Unity a symbol of people’s resolve

Kevadia, Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led the nation in paying rich tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birth anniversary, describing the Iron Man of India as the architect of national unity whose ideals continue to guide the country’s march towards strength and self-reliance.

Addressing the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations in Kevadia — home to the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity — the Prime Minister said that the 150th Jayanti of Sardar Patel marked a “historic occasion” and a moment of immense national pride. “The morning in Ekta Nagar is divine, the view awe-inspiring, and the collective presence of people from across the nation at the feet of Sardar Patel is a moment of great significance,” he said.

Highlighting the nationwide Run for Unity and the enthusiastic participation of crores of Indians, Modi said it reflected the living spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He noted that the events held to mark the occasion showcased the “traditions of the past, the labour and valour of the present, and a glimpse of future accomplishments.”

To commemorate the occasion, the Prime Minister released a special postal stamp and a commemorative coin in honour of Sardar Patel, extending his greetings to all 140 crore citizens of India on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.

In a post on X, Modi wrote, “India pays homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th Jayanti. He was the driving force behind India’s integration, thus shaping our nation’s destiny in its formative years. His unwavering commitment to national integrity, good governance and public service continues to inspire generations. We also reaffirm our collective resolve to uphold his vision of a united, strong and self-reliant India.”

Referring to the Statue of Unity as a shining symbol of national pride, the Prime Minister said it represented not only Sardar Patel’s towering legacy but also the collective emotion of millions of Indians who contributed to its making. “The ‘Statue of Unity’ is a tribute to Sardar Patel and what is remarkable is that it was built as a result of a mass movement, where people from across India, particularly from its villages, felt connected with this iconic statue. Do visit Kevadia and discover its grandness yourself,” he posted.

Sardar Patel’s vision, Modi said, continues to inspire New India to remain united and resolute. “The resolve of New India is being tangibly felt,” he added, underscoring that the celebration was not just a remembrance of the past but a reaffirmation of India’s unity and purpose for the future.

India Women make history: stun Australia to reach World Cup final

Navi Mumbai, October 30: In one of the most thrilling moments in Indian cricket history, the India women’s team chased down a mammoth 339 to defeat defending champions Australia by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium and book a place in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup final.

Chasing Australia’s imposing total, India looked in trouble early after losing both openers, Shafali Verma (10) and Smriti Mandhana (24), inside the first 10 overs. Enter Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who together steadied the ship. Rodrigues produced a career-defining unbeaten 127 off 134 balls to steer India across the line with nine balls to spare. She shared a stellar third-wicket partnership of 167 runs with Harmanpreet (89 from 86 balls).

As the final winning runs were cut by Amanjot Kaur, the crowd of 34,651 erupted, players embraced, and tears flowed from Rodrigues and Harmanpreet — a powerful reflection of what the win meant. The victorious India team will now face South Africa in Sunday’s final, with the dream of finally lifting the trophy looming large.

Former men’s captain Virat Kohli applauded the effort via social media: “What a victory by our team over a mighty opponent like Australia. A great chase by the girls and a standout performance by Jemimah in a big game. A true display of resilience, belief, and passion. Well done, Team India!”

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar wrote: “Fabulous victory! Well done @JemiRodrigues and @ImHarmanpreet for leading from the front. … Keep the tricolour flying high.”

Former India women cricket captain Mithali Raj hailed the team India and said, “Nights like these remind you why you play this game.”

Bollywood stars joined the celebrations too, with filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli posting, “You’ve made the nation proud,” and actor Varun Dhawan tweeting his excitement at the historic win.

”What a moment for India! Our women’s team @BCCIWomen storms into the ICC #WomensWorldCup2025 Final with a thrilling win over Australia! A stunning display of determination, unity, and brilliance on the field. Take a bow, @JemiRodrigues, that century was pure class!,” wrote Kantara star Rishab Shetty.

The result marks the highest successful chase in women’s ODI World Cup history and ends Australia’s reign as a virtually unbeaten force in knockout matches. It also signals a new era for Indian women’s cricket — built on belief, fortitude, and the unshakable belief that they belong at the summit.

Gum Disease May Quietly Harm the Brain, Scientists Warn

A new study suggests that gum disease may do more than damage your teeth — it might also harm your brain. Researchers have found that adults with gum disease tend to have more white matter damage, a sign of subtle brain injury that can affect memory, reasoning, and coordination.

The study, published in Neurology® Open Access by the American Academy of Neurology, examined more than 1,100 adults with an average age of 77 and found that participants with gum disease were significantly more likely to show small bright spots on their brain scans, known as white matter hyperintensities. These spots often increase with age and are linked to conditions such as stroke and cognitive decline, ScienceDaily reported.

Dr. Souvik Sen of the University of South Carolina, who led the research, said the findings highlight a connection between oral and brain health that is only beginning to be understood. “This study shows a link between gum disease and white matter damage, suggesting that oral health may play a role in brain health,” Sen said. “Keeping your mouth healthy could help protect your brain.”

Even after accounting for factors like age, blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking, people with gum disease were found to have a 56% higher likelihood of being in the group with the most extensive white matter damage. Those with the condition had an average of 2.83% of their total brain volume affected, compared to 2.52% in people without gum disease.

Researchers suspect that chronic inflammation in the gums may affect blood vessel health in the brain, although more research is needed to confirm how the two are connected. Interestingly, gum disease did not appear to be linked to other forms of brain injury, such as small vessel blockages or microbleeds, suggesting a more specific impact on white matter.

Experts say the findings reinforce the importance of routine dental care — not just for oral hygiene but potentially for brain protection as well. Gum disease is both preventable and treatable, making it a simple but powerful way to support long-term brain health.
