India Edge South Africa in Ranchi Thriller

Ranchi: India held their nerve to secure a tense 17-run victory over South Africa in the opening ODI at Ranchi on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the series after a late scare from the visitors’ lower-order batters. Virat Kohli led the scoring with his 52nd century in the format, supported by half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, as the hosts posted 349 for eight.

Asked to bat first, India adopted an aggressive approach from the outset. Yashasvi Jaiswal struck boundaries early before falling to Nandre Burger, but Rohit and Kohli steadied the innings, finding the fence frequently during a dominant powerplay. The pair added a rapid hundred-run stand, with Rohit surpassing the record for most sixes in ODI cricket along the way.

The momentum dipped briefly in the middle overs as wickets fell, but Rahul’s calm presence at the crease helped Kohli rebuild. After moving into the nineties with style, Kohli reached his milestone and immediately accelerated, hitting multiple boundaries in quick succession before eventually holing out. Rahul carried on the late surge, lifting India close to 350 despite disciplined death overs from Corbin Bosch.

Chasing 350, South Africa made the worst possible start. Harshit Rana struck twice in his first over and Arshdeep Singh added a third soon after, leaving the tourists reeling at 11 for three. Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi counterattacked, but Kuldeep Yadav removed de Zorzi just as signs of recovery appeared.

Dewald Brevis and Breetzke then sparked fresh hope with brisk hitting, though Brevis’ attempt to dominate Rana resulted in a miscue and his dismissal. With half the side gone by the 22nd over, India looked in firm control—until Marco Jansen arrived with a flurry of boundaries. The tall all-rounder smashed a rapid fifty that put pressure back on the home side.

Kuldeep’s double strike in one over, including the key wickets of Breetzke and Jansen, shifted the contest again. But South Africa refused to fold. Bosch kept the chase alive with smart strike rotation and clean hitting. Even as wickets tumbled around him, he reached his maiden ODI fifty and pushed the match into the final over with 18 needed from six balls.

With just one wicket left, Bosch went for another big hit but miscued, handing India the win as South Africa were bowled out for 332 in 49.2 overs. Kuldeep claimed four wickets, while Rana finished with three—both crucial in a game that swung wildly throughout.

The two teams now move forward with the hosts ahead, but South Africa’s fightback ensures that the rest of the series promises high-intensity cricket.

Cyclone Ditwah: IMD warns of ‘extremely heavy rain’ as storm nears TN, AP coasts

Cyclone Ditwah continued moving close to the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coastline on Sunday, triggering intense showers, strong winds and widespread disruption across several coastal districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of Tamil Nadu, warning of isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 30, with more heavy showers expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and Telangana through December 1.

“Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu & Coastal Andhra Pradesh today (30 Nov). Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana on 30 Nov–1 Dec. Stay alert and stay safe,” the IMD said in an advisory shared on X.

The storm, positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, has been inching northward parallel to the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast. As per the latest IMD update, the system was located about 100 km east–southeast of Cuddalore, 110 km east–southeast of Puducherry and roughly 180 km south–southeast of Chennai on Sunday morning.

Authorities said Ditwah may weaken gradually while tracking close to the shoreline, but its associated cloud bands are already dumping torrential rain across coastal belts. Disaster response teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts, with state agencies monitoring reservoirs, drains and low-lying zones for flood risk.

Chennai airport saw significant flight disruptions as gusty winds and poor visibility forced cancellation of over 40 services, including domestic and international routes. Several coastal roads in Tamil Nadu reported waterlogging, and paddy fields in districts such as Thoothukudi and Mayiladuthurai were submerged, raising concern over crop loss.

Puducherry recorded rough sea conditions and high tides, leading authorities to issue strict warnings to fishermen. Tourism and beach activities remain suspended as a safety precaution.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai, where heavy rain is expected to persist intermittently. Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Puducherry and Karaikal are among the areas under the highest risk category for extreme rainfall events.

States further inland — Telangana, parts of Rayalaseema and interior Tamil Nadu — may also experience heavy showers and thunderstorms as the cyclone’s rain belts expand.

Officials have urged residents in affected districts not to venture near the shore, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow local advisories closely until conditions improve. Power and communication teams are on standby to restore essential services wherever needed.

Sri Lanka has reported severe devastation linked to the same storm system, with officials confirming that at least 193 lives have been lost as floods continue to swamp parts of Colombo and nearby regions. The country’s Disaster Management Centre said rescue teams are still searching for more than 220 missing individuals, and warned that the rains triggered by Cyclone Ditwah could intensify again over the next few days. Authorities remain on high alert as swollen rivers and inundated neighbourhoods pose ongoing danger to residents.

Odisha, AIFF president discuss expansion of grassroots football

BHUBANESWAR: All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey met Odisha Sports Secretary Sachin R. Jadhav in Bhubaneswar on Saturday to discuss the renewal of the AIFF–FIFA Talent Academy in the State.

The discussions focused on creating a structured feeder system across all districts in Odisha and building talent pathways through the National Education Policy to support young footballers.

Strengthening the grassroots ecosystem was a key priority, including improved training for Physical Education Teachers and appointing former footballers as AIFF D-Licensed coaches to support early talent identification and development.

Suraj said: “Odisha is fully committed to nurturing football talent right from the grassroots level. By integrating sports into the school ecosystem, we aim to identify and nourish young students across every block, providing them with world-class coaching and structured pathways.”

He added that the meeting reinforced a shared vision to establish a strong feeder network capable of producing future athletes who can represent India on the global stage.
