India advances fighter safety tech with successful high-speed escape system test

India has taken a major step forward in strengthening pilot safety in future fighter aircraft as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday successfully carried out a high-speed rocket-sled test of an indigenous escape system, validating safe canopy separation and ejection sequencing during emergency situations.

The test took place at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of DRDO’s Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh. Teams from the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) collaborated with DRDO for the trial, which officials described as a breakthrough in indigenous aviation safety capability.

Unlike static trials, dynamic ejection tests require precise control and greater complexity as they simulate real-flight emergency conditions. For the demonstration, the forebody of a Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) was mounted on a dual-sled system and accelerated using multiple solid-propellant rocket motors fired in phases. The focus was to test the canopy’s break-off design and the ejection process at controlled high speeds.

To mirror real-world pilot conditions, an instrumented Anthropomorphic Test Dummy was seated in the ejection module. It recorded critical forces and accelerations expected during a real emergency. The entire sequence — from canopy shattering to escape and recovery — was captured through on-board and ground-based cameras.

The test was witnessed by representatives from the Indian Air Force and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine. Officials said the results confirmed that the system is capable of enabling safe escape even under high-speed, high-stress conditions.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists and industry partners, calling the success “a significant milestone” that strengthens India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence technologies. DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat also commended the teams involved for advancing India into a select group of nations with advanced ejection testing capabilities.

With more indigenous fighter jets and trainers under development, this achievement is expected to boost ongoing efforts to equip Indian pilots with the highest safety standards during mission-critical operations.

India responds firmly when provoked, says Rajnath Singh

Vadodara: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh affirmed on Tuesday that Operation Sindoor reflects India’s firm resolve against terrorism, stating it demonstrates that the country “responds strongly to those who do not understand peace and goodwill.” He drew parallels between India’s decisive actions and the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known for prioritising dialogue while exercising bold decisions when required – including the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.

The minister was speaking at the Sardar Sabha in Vadodara, held as part of the ‘Unity March’ organised by Mera Yuva Bharat, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, according to an official statement.

Lauding the Armed Forces for the successful conduct of Operation Sindoor, he said global recognition of India’s defence capability continues to grow. Singh reiterated that India remains a peace-loving nation, but will not hesitate to protect its sovereignty if provoked.

Honouring Sardar Patel’s Legacy

Rajnath Singh described Patel as a pivotal figure in shaping a unified India. He said Patel’s vision of “One India, Best India” has strengthened under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the abrogation of Article 370, he noted that the decision reinforced the integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the national mainstream.

He added that India, once uncertain on the global stage, is now confidently engaging with the world on its own terms. “India is marching ahead towards becoming a major economic and strategic power. This is due to the immense contribution of Sardar Patel,” he added.

India’s Growing Strategic and Economic Power

Highlighting the government’s work toward national development, Singh said India, ranked 11th globally in economic size before 2014, now holds the fourth position and is progressing toward the top three. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ while strengthening the idea of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ and the goal of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Hidden cancer-linked chemicals found in everyday foods, new study warns

What if the foods you consider healthy are hiding cancer-linked chemicals? A new study by researchers in South Korea has revealed that everyday items like fruits and vegetables can carry harmful contaminants formed during cooking or environmental exposure.

The findings, published in the journal Food Science and Biotechnology, raise fresh concerns about what may be lurking on our plates. Researchers from Seoul National University of Science & Technology have discovered that PAHs are generated when food is grilled, roasted, smoked or fried, and can also accumulate through air pollution or soil contamination. Some of these compounds are known to be carcinogenic, making accurate and efficient testing essential for public health and food safety, they found.

Traditionally, detecting these contaminants requires time-consuming and chemical-intensive lab procedures. To improve monitoring, the research team led by Professor Joon-Goo Lee evaluated a newer testing approach called QuEChERS — short for Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe. The method simplifies the extraction of organic substances and reduces the use of toxic chemicals compared with older techniques.

The researchers applied the technique to eight PAHs across various food samples and reported high accuracy, strong recovery rates and very low detection limits. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, they confirmed that the streamlined method was both sensitive and reliable when measuring contamination levels.

“This method not only simplifies the analytical process but also demonstrates high efficiency in detection compared to conventional methods,” Prof. Lee said, noting that it could be used across a wide range of food products.

Scientists say the approach could strengthen food safety checks and help industries improve quality control while cutting down costs and laboratory waste. The team emphasized that faster detection systems will be key in reducing consumer exposure to harmful chemicals.

“This can improve public health by ensuring safer food and reduce hazardous emissions from testing,” Prof. Lee added.

The study highlights the need for continued monitoring of contaminants in the global food supply, particularly as more consumers adopt health-focused diets and increase their intake of cooked produce. Researchers say better testing can prevent risks before they reach the plate.

IGIA sets sustainability benchmark with water-positive certification

Delhi: GMR Aero-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced that Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is now the first airport in India with a capacity of over 40 million passengers per annum to achieve water-positive status – marking a significant milestone in sustainable water management in the global aviation sector.

IGIA, which has long been recognised for its environmental and sustainability initiatives, has transformed from a groundwater-stressed airport into a facility that replenishes more water than it consumes.

This accomplishment was officially acknowledged at the Water Innovation Summit 2025 in New Delhi, where DIAL received recognition for achieving Scope I Water Neutrality under the NITI Aayog–CII Water Neutrality Framework. The honour reinforces IGIA’s position as a global leader in climate-resilient and sustainable airport infrastructure, GMR said in a press release.

Commenting on the achievement, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO–DIAL, said: “At DIAL, sustainability is not an obligation – it’s our driving force. Becoming water-positive reflects our deep commitment to responsible resource use, environmental stewardship, and the future of aviation infrastructure. More importantly, this achievement is a significant step towards our long-term vision of strengthening IGIA’s position as a net zero airport. Water positivity not only reduces our dependence on natural resources but also enhances our resilience and climate readiness. IGIA is not just India’s busiest airport; it is one of the greenest airports in the country.”

Key water management and sustainability highlights:

Rainwater Harvesting & Storage: The airport has installed more than 625 rainwater-harvesting systems. Additionally, two newly built underground reservoirs with a total capacity of 9 million litres significantly enhance water collection and storage.

Zero-Liquid Discharge & Wastewater Recycling: A 16.6 Million Litres per Day Zero-Liquid Discharge Sewage Treatment Plant ensures that all wastewater is treated and reused. The recycled water supports HVAC operations, landscaping irrigation, toilet flushing, and other non-potable uses.

This water-positive achievement adds to DIAL’s sustainability record. IGIA is already the first airport in Asia in its category to receive Level 5 Carbon Accreditation under the Airports Council International Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Government clarifies Sanchar Saathi App is voluntary amid Opposition criticism

New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday clarified that the mandate around the Sanchar Saathi mobile application is “completely democratic and fully voluntary,” responding to Opposition claims that the initiative is unconstitutional.

Union Minister for Communications and Minister for Development of the Northeastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, stated that users are free to install the app at their convenience to access its features and may deactivate or delete it at any time.

Scindia reiterated that consumer protection remains the government’s top priority and that Sanchar Saathi has been developed to empower mobile subscribers against fraud and unauthorized usage.

“Sanchar Saathi is both an app and a portal that enables citizens to secure themselves through transparent, easy-to-use tools. It represents Jan Bhagidari, where citizens actively participate in safeguarding their digital ecosystem,” he said.

The clarification came after Opposition leaders strongly criticized the directive.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said he would participate in the debate in the Lok Sabha on the matter, while Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra labelled the platform a “snooping app.”

Speaking to reporters, she said: “Citizens have the right to privacy. People must be able to communicate with family and friends without government surveillance.”

Congress MP KC Venugopal also condemned the move, calling it unconstitutional.

“Big Brother cannot watch us. This DoT direction is beyond unconstitutional,” he said in a post on X.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had earlier issued directions, requiring all mobile manufacturers and importers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on handsets meant for sale and use in India. The move, according to an official statement, aims to help users verify whether a mobile device is genuine, prevent the sale of counterfeit phones, and strengthen the Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity framework.Under the mandate, manufacturers and importers must:

  1. Pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on every new mobile handset manufactured or imported for use in India.
  2. Ensure the app is visible, accessible, and functional during the initial device setup, without restrictions or the ability to disable its core features.
  3. For devices already manufactured or present in sales channels, companies must make efforts to provide the app through software updates.

The directive issued on 28th November requires companies to complete implementation within 90 days, and submit compliance reports within 120 days.

Sanchar Saathi is an initiative by the DoT to curb telecom misuse, enhance cyber security, and safeguard mobile users from fraud. The DoT has identified that some App-Based Communication Services using Indian mobile numbers for user identification or service access are allowing customers to use their platforms without requiring the associated Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) in the device. This capability has reportedly been misused for cyber fraud, including activities carried out from outside India.

Several government bodies, agencies, and an inter-ministerial group have raised concerns over SIM binding in messaging applications and its misuse. Following multiple discussions with major service providers on the feasibility and need for enforcement, the DoT has taken regulatory action.

Given the seriousness of the issue, the DoT issued Directions to major App-Based Communication Services under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024 (as amended). These Directions aim to prevent the misuse of telecom identifiers and protect the security and integrity of the telecom ecosystem. The services covered under this directive include WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Arattai, Sharechat, Josh, JioChat, and Signal.

CM Majhi inaugurates world-famous Konark Festival
