Tata Steel Chess: Anand, Niemann take lead on opening day

Kolkata: Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand and American Hans Niemann finished opening day tied for the lead on 2.5 points, while Carissa Yip surged ahead in the women’s field at the seventh Tata Steel Chess India Rapid on Wednesday.

Anand opened his campaign with vintage precision, tightening the screws on Wesley So until the American position gave way. Vidit Gujrathi made headlines with the black pieces, steering a commanding game against Arjun Erigaisi and bringing it home with a rarely seen bishop-and-knight mate. Niemann began with a flamboyant win over Volodar Murzin, highlighted by a bold excursion with his king.

The next set of games featured R Praggnanandhaa, who methodically gained space across both flanks before landing the decisive blows against Arjun. So produced a crowd-pleaser, marching his king to h6 in an imaginative victory over Murzin, while Nihal Sarin downed Aravindh Chithambaram with crisp calculation. Anand split the point with Wei Yi.

In Round 3, Anand was back on the scoreboard, outfoxing Aravindh with tidy rook manoeuvres to win with black. So toppled Wei Yi, Arjun exploited a slip to outlast Nihal, and Niemann capped the day with a sharp triumph against Praggnanandhaa, sealed by a well-timed bishop sacrifice.

On the women’s boards, Carissa Yip emerged as the sole leader with 2.5 points. Among the home contenders, Vantika Agrawal stood out early, collecting 2 points from three rounds.

The section opened with a marathon 114-move draw between Harika Dronavalli and Divya Deshmukh. Agrawal began strongly, converting extra material against R Vaishali with a clean technique.

Round 2 brought three results: Stavroula Tsolakidou overcame Deshmukh in a tactical encounter, Kateryna Lagno squeezed out a win over Agrawal in a knight-versus-bishop ending, and Aleksandra Goryachkina opened her tally by punishing Vaishali’s exposed king.

In the final round of the day, Yip moved clear at the top by guiding home an early exchange win against Goryachkina. Nana Dzagnidze edged Tsolakidou in a tense queen ending, and Agrawal posted her second victory, beating Harika. Rakshitta Ravi closed the day as the only unbeaten Indian, drawing all three games.

DRI busts international gold smuggling syndicate, seizes ₹40 crore worth gold

New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a major trans-border gold smuggling syndicate operating across India, Dubai and Bangladesh, seizing foreign-origin gold worth over ₹40 crore along with cash amounting to ₹2.9 crore.

According to an official statement, the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs, leading to coordinated searches in Delhi and Agartala. On January 6, 2026, DRI officials apprehended a key member of the syndicate at a domestic logistics warehouse while he was taking delivery of two consignments that had originated from Agartala, Tripura.

Upon examination, officials recovered 15 kg of foreign-origin gold bearing international refinery markings, valued at approximately ₹20.73 crore. Parallel searches at multiple locations in Delhi and Agartala led to the seizure of an additional 14.2 kg of smuggled gold and ₹2.90 crore in cash, which included Indian and Bangladeshi currency notes.

In total, the DRI seized 29.2 kg of gold valued at around ₹40 crore and arrested four members of the smuggling network under provisions of the Customs Act.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the syndicate was smuggling gold into India through the Indo–Bangladesh border via Tripura. The consignment was then transported to Delhi using domestic cargo services, with the involvement of handlers based in Dubai and Bangladesh, as well as local operatives running jewellery businesses in Agartala.

Officials said the operation has disrupted a well-organised international network and reaffirmed the DRI’s role in curbing illicit trade that poses a threat to India’s economic and fiscal stability. Further investigation into the syndicate’s wider links and financial trail is currently underway.

Jaishankar holds talks in Paris to boost Indo-France strategic partnership

Paris: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in Paris on Wednesday for a round of bilateral consultations, reaffirming the depth of the India–France strategic partnership. In his opening remarks, Jaishankar said it was a pleasure to be in Paris and noted that France remains one of India’s oldest strategic partners and the first in Europe to build such a relationship with New Delhi.

Jaishankar underlined that the discussions were taking place against the backdrop of a volatile international environment. He said that in periods of global uncertainty, it is natural for close partners to stay in frequent contact and make full use of existing institutional mechanisms across multiple sectors. He added that both sides had already held a productive exchange of views on regional and international developments and expressed confidence that the bilateral session would advance co-operation under the Horizon 2047 Roadmap and potentially generate fresh ideas.

The minister stressed that India and France continue to collaborate actively on the global stage, pointing out that both governments led major platforms this year, with India chairing BRICS and France presiding over the G7. He also highlighted their shared membership of the G20 and engagement in numerous multilateral organisations, according to a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry. Jaishankar said that as nations committed to a multipolar world, working together was essential not only to serve national interests but also to contribute to stability in international politics.

Meanwhile, Jaishankar took part in the Weimar Format engagement in Paris, marking India’s first participation in the dialogue that brings together France, Germany, and Poland. The meeting, hosted by Barrot, also included German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. Jaishankar thanked the three ministers for the invitation and described the interaction as open, substantive, and wide-ranging.

At the Weimar Format meeting, Jaishankar said the consultations centred on three key themes: India–European Union relations, the Indo-Pacific region, and the conflict in Ukraine. He highlighted India’s deepening engagement with Europe, both through the EU collectively and through individual member states. As co-operation broadens, he said it was natural for smaller group formats like Weimar to supplement larger platforms.

In a post on X, he said: “Best wishes to the team as two more Guinness World Records are being attempted by 11 Jan 2026 on Packages 2 & 3 of this landmark corridor in Andhra Pradesh.”

NHAI officials confirmed that two additional Guinness World Record attempts are underway on Packages 2 and 3 of the corridor, and are expected to conclude by January 11, 2026. Pradhan, Gadkari discuss road connectivity between Sambalpur, Jharsuguda

New Delhi: To further strengthen connectivity between the two major industrial cities – Sambalpur and Jharsuguda – Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday and requested the construction of an alternative National Highway.

Sambalpur and Jharsuguda districts form the backbone of Odisha’s economy. The construction of this new National Highway is expected to accelerate industrial growth in the region and create new employment opportunities. The proposed highway will not only connect Sambalpur and Jharsuguda but also serve as a milestone in Odisha’s industrial and regional development, according to an official statement. Along with improving transportation, it is expected to bring transformative changes in trade and commerce.

Pradhan stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Purvodaya’ vision, priority is being accorded to strengthening Odisha’s infrastructure. Once completed, this alternative highway will significantly improve the social and economic lives of people in the region.

Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi on Wednesday called on Gadkari in New Delhi and discussed key issues aimed at easing traffic flow and strengthening highway infrastructure in the state capital region.

During the meeting, Sarangi sought approval for a vehicular underpass at Baghamari on National Highway 57, citing rising vehicular pressure and movement of residents as reasons for urgent intervention. She also urged the ministry to clear three bypass proposals at Begunia, Sunakhela, and Pubusahi, which she said would help decongest the NH stretch and provide seamless connectivity for commuters and freight carriers.

Another priority highlighted by the Bhubaneswar MP was the widening of the Khurda–Nayagarh road to four lanes. She maintained that the route has seen a surge in traffic due to rapid urban and industrial expansion and requires immediate upgradation to ensure smoother and safer travel.

Sarangi later stated that projects worth around Rs111 crore have been sanctioned, marking a significant step forward for road development in the region.
