Indigo assures DGCA of pilot availability after December disruptions

New Delhi: IndiGo has informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that it now has sufficient pilot strength to meet its operational requirements, a key assurance following the operational disruptions that led to widespread flight delays and cancellations in December 2025.

In the latest DGCA review meeting held on Monday, the airline shared data indicating that for February 2026, it will have 2,400 Airbus commanders available against a requirement of 2,280, and 2,240 Airbus first officers against a requirement of 2,050, suggesting adequate crew availability to support its approved flight network.

The assurance comes after IndiGo faced heightened regulatory scrutiny earlier this winter, when operational shortcomings – including inadequate crew buffers, gaps in regulatory preparedness, and weaknesses in manpower and system planning – contributed to disruptions across its network. Regulators noted that an aggressive focus on maximising aircraft utilisation and workforce deployment reduced operational resilience, stretching crew rosters and limiting recovery margins.

To stabilise operations and safeguard passenger safety, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in coordination with the DGCA, introduced enhanced oversight and immediate corrective measures. Temporary operational relaxations were allowed to help restore stability without compromising safety standards.

According to the DGCA, two Flight Operations Inspectors and one Passenger Facilitation Inspector were deployed to IndiGo’s Operations Control Centre and select airports between January 6 and February 10, 2026, to monitor operations during the stabilisation phase. The inspectors monitored day-to-day operations, passenger handling, and compliance with regulatory norms during the recovery phase.

IndiGo was directed to submit daily reports on flight cancellations and delays, crew positioning and availability, standby and leave utilisation, and overall system performance. The airline was also asked to submit weekly and fortnightly reports on critical operational and manpower parameters, along with a detailed Corrective Action Plan outlining steps to ensure long-term stability and full compliance with revised Flight Duty Time Limitation norms.

The expanded reporting framework covered pilot training pipelines, attrition forecasts, pending endorsements, command upgrades, first officer hiring, pilot release timelines, and fleet availability across Airbus, ATR, and wet-leased aircraft, as well as the balance between required and available pilot strength.

Following the January 19 review, IndiGo told regulators that its operations had stabilised and that it does not expect any flight cancellations after February 10, 2026, on the currently approved network. The airline also confirmed the withdrawal of two FDTL exemptions that had been granted in December 2025, according to a post on X by the DGCA.

Aviation authorities said sustained regulatory oversight and corrective measures have contributed to improved operational stability and service reliability. The DGCA continues to closely monitor IndiGo’s operations, with a focus on roster integrity, crew availability, buffer adequacy, system robustness, and strict adherence to flight duty regulations.

Nitin Nabin takes charge as BJP’s 12th national president

New Delhi: In a generational shift within the Bharatiya Janata Party, 45-year-old Nitin Nabin on Tuesday took charge as the party’s 12th national president at its New Delhi headquarters, becoming the youngest leader to hold the post after being elected unopposed with overwhelming support

Nabin assumed charge in the presence of several senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing BJP president JP Nadda and several union ministers after being elected unopposed, with 37 sets of nomination papers backing his name.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nabin, describing the BJP as the world’s largest political party and thanking former presidents for strengthening the organisation over the years. In a series of posts, Modi said “I am fully confident that his energetic leadership, organisational capability and deep connect with party workers will further strengthen the party. Under his leadership, every BJP worker will pursue the resolve of serving the nation and the people with renewed zeal and determination, leaving no effort undone.”

The enthusiasm of party workers on the occasion reflected fresh energy within the organisation, adding that the BJP’s leadership tradition is rooted in experience, public service and nation-building, he said, and remarked that while he has served three terms as Prime Minister, being a BJP worker remains his greatest pride, and said that in party matters, the national president is “even my boss”.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the BJP had evolved from being a “party with a difference” into a party of governance, offering the country a development model based on stability, good governance and sensitivity. He said the party had translated social justice from slogans into action by delivering welfare schemes directly to the poor.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde termed Nabin’s appointment a historic moment of generational change, expressing confidence that he would further strengthen the BJP and the NDA under the Prime Minister’s vision of inclusive growth.

In his first message as president, Nabin said the BJP’s organisation is not merely a system but a tradition of values. Calling his election an honour to an ordinary worker’s extraordinary journey, he thanked Prime Minister Modi, outgoing chief J.P. Nadda and party leaders across states for their trust. He pledged to carry forward the organisational legacy and work with full commitment towards the goal of building a “Viksit Bharat”.

Nabin is the son of late senior party leader and four-time Bihar Assembly legislator Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha. He entered active politics in 2006 following his father’s death, reportedly winning a by-election from Patna West. A five-term MLA from the Bankipur constituency in Patna, he previously served in the Bihar cabinet holding the Road Construction, Law, and Urban Development portfolios. He rose through the party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), and gained national prominence for his organizational success as the co-in-charge of Chhattisgarh during the 2023 elections.

Ancient Buddhist relic displayed at Lalitgiri

Lalitgiri: Lalitgiri witnessed a spiritually significant gathering on Monday with the observance of the 2nd Guru Padmasambhava Ceremony, which drew Buddhist monks, scholars, spiritual practitioners, and devotees from India and abroad. The ceremony was held to commemorate Guru Padmasambhava, the revered Buddhist master associated with the spread of Vajrayana Buddhism, and focused on his teachings of compassion, mindfulness, and enlightenment through prayers, rituals, and meditative practices.

A key highlight of the observance was the public display of a rare Buddhist relic dating back to the 3rd Century BC. As identified by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the relic was ceremonially taken out of its protected enclosure at the ASI Lalitgiri Museum and displayed for public viewing on January 16. The relic, which is normally preserved under strict conservation protocols, was made accessible to devotees as part of the religious observance, according to a release.

Revered monks, Buddhist scholars, practitioners, and devotees gathered in large numbers to offer prayers and receive blessings, underscoring the enduring spiritual resonance of Lalitgiri as one of the most significant early centres of Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent.

The initiative for the public display was undertaken by the ASI in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and the Department of Odia Language, Literature & Culture. The display enabled monks, scholars, practitioners, and devotees to offer prayers and pay homage, reinforcing Lalitgiri’s standing as one of the earliest and most significant centres of Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent.

Officials ensured that the event was conducted in coordination with religious authorities and archaeological custodians, with due emphasis on the dignity, security, and preservation of the relic. The ceremony highlighted Odisha’s rich Buddhist heritage and reaffirmed Lalitgiri’s importance on the global Buddhist map as a site of historical, spiritual, and cultural significance.

Tamil Nadu Governor walks out of assembly over anthem row

Chennai: The first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for the year began on a tense note on Tuesday after Governor R.N. Ravi walked out of the House without delivering his customary address, reportedly citing “disrespect” to the National Anthem and objections to the manner in which proceedings were conducted.

According to media reports, as the session commenced, Speaker M. Appavu urged the Governor to adhere strictly to constitutional convention and read out only the address approved by the elected government. Amid protests from the treasury benches, the Speaker underlined that legislative procedure must prevail, stating that only members of the Legislative Assembly are entitled to express opinions within the House.

Governor Ravi responded from the well of the Assembly, expressing displeasure over what he described as interruptions during his address. He termed the situation “unfortunate” and said he was “disappointed”, adding that the National Anthem had not been accorded due respect. He also claimed that his microphone was repeatedly switched off.

Shortly thereafter, the Governor left the Assembly without completing or formally delivering the address, triggering a fresh confrontation between Raj Bhavan and the elected House. The walkout comes against the backdrop of earlier disagreements between the Governor and the state government over constitutional protocol and the content of official communications.

Later, the Tamil Nadu Lok Bhavan issued a release explaining the reasons why the Governor left the House without delivering the address. “The Governor’s Mike was repeatedly switched and he was not allowed to speak,” it said, adding that the prepared address contained “numerous unsubstantiated claims and misleading statements” and that several issues of concern raised by the Governor were not reflected in the text.

The episode has once again brought into focus the growing friction between the constitutional head of the state and the legislature, setting a contentious tone for the session ahead.

India-New Zealand FTA to boost trade and jobs: Luxon

New Delhi: New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, in his 2026 State of the Nation speech, emphasised on Monday that the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India will strengthen business competitiveness and act as a major driver for economic growth. He highlighted that the deal, completed in less than a year, supports domestic job creation and wage increases.

The agreement removes or reduces tariffs on 95% of New Zealand’s exports, with around 57% ecoming duty-free immediately after it comes into effect. Speaking about the milestone in a post on X, Luxon said: “This is another example of what I mean when I say National is fixing the basics and building the future.”

The India-New Zealand FTA, concluded on December 22, 2025, represents a comprehensive, balanced, and forward-looking agreement, marking a key strategic and economic milestone in India’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific region.

Negotiations for the deal were formally launched on March 16, 2025, during a meeting between Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay.

Maharashtra delegation studies Odisha alumni school model

The delegation appreciated Odisha’s 2× Matching Grant Model, which effectively amplifies contributions from alumni and local communities to enhance school infrastructure and learning outcomes.

The visit began with a detailed briefing at the Panchasakha Sikhya Setu Office, where State Project Director-cum-Member Secretary Ananya Das (IAS) presented the objectives and key initiatives of the programme, including MSP, Aithiya Vidyalaya, and Watch & Ward, highlighting their role in strengthening school management and engagement.

CSR heads from Odisha Mining Corporation and IMFA also shared insights on corporate–community collaboration and its impact on school development. The delegation later visited Badagada High School and Kusabhadra High School in Banamalipur, where interactions with alumni and students provided firsthand exposure to the programme’s outcomes on the ground, according to a post on X by PSS Odisha.

Maharashtra secures multi-billion-dollar MoUs to boost jobs

Mumbai: Maharashtra on Monday marked a strong presence at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presiding over and witnessing a series of high-value Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). These agreements aim to accelerate industrial growth, infrastructure development, and employment generation across the State.

A key MoU was signed between the government of Maharashtra, through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and the SBG Group for a USD20 billion investment in the logistics sector. The project, focused on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is expected to generate 4.5 lakh jobs. Fadnavis and SBG Group Chairman Saurabh Bora witnessed the MoU.

In another significant development, the State government entered into an MoU with Surjagad Ispat Ltd. involving an investment of Rs20,000 crore in the steel sector. The project will be located in Gadchiroli district of the Vidarbha region and is expected to create 8,000 employment opportunities. The CM and Vedansh Joshi, Managing Director, were present during the signing.

Fadnavis also presided over multiple MoU exchanges between the MMRDA and leading global and domestic partners, reflecting a comprehensive approach to urban development, real estate, sustainability, and institutional collaboration.

The government also entered into MoUs with Sumitomo Realty & Development involving an investment of USD8 billion with an employment potential of 80,000, with K. Raheja Corp committing USD10 billion expected to generate one lakh jobs, with Alta Capital in partnership with Panchshil Realty proposing a USD25 billion investment creating 2.5 lakh employment opportunities, and with IISM Global planning an investment of USD8 billion with the potential to employ 80,000 people.

Additionally, JICA was onboarded as a strategy and policy partner, while Sembcorp Development Ltd., Singapore, will serve as a knowledge partner for the development of integrated industrial parks with low carbon emissions. The Technical University of Munich, Germany, partnered with the state on sustainable urban transport systems, and Urban Futures Collective, London, comprising professors from some of the world’s leading universities, will work on creating digital twin ecosystems for Mumbai to enhance sustainability, resilience, and urban livability.

Further strengthening the steel manufacturing ecosystem, an MoU was signed between the government of Maharashtra and BFN Forgings for an investment of Rs565 crore. The project, to be located in Palghar district in the MMR, is expected to generate 847 jobs, the CM said in a series of posts on X.

The series of MoUs at Davos 2026 underscores Maharashtra’s focus on large-scale investments, balanced regional development, sustainable urban planning, and job creation, positioning the state as a key destination for global capital and long-term industrial growth.
