AAIB rejects speculation, says AI-171 probe ongoing

New Delhi: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday clarified that the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 accident is still in progress, dismissing recent media reports suggesting that the probe has been finalised.

In an official statement, the AAIB said claims that the investigation had reached a conclusion were “incorrect and speculative,” adding that no final findings have been drawn. “The investigation is still in progress. No final conclusions have been reached,” the bureau said.

The AAIB emphasised that aircraft accident investigations are conducted strictly under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2025, and in line with India’s obligations under ICAO Annex 13. It described the process as technical and evidence-based, aimed at identifying root causes and improving aviation safety.

Referring to its earlier communication, the AAIB noted that the preliminary report released previously contained only factual information available at that stage of the inquiry. The final investigation report, which will include conclusions and safety recommendations, will be published upon completion of the probe, the statement said.

The bureau also urged media organisations to exercise restraint and avoid premature speculation. “Unverified reporting causes unnecessary public anxiety and undermines the integrity of an ongoing professional investigation,” it said.

The clarification follows reports carried by sections of the international media. An Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, had alleged that one of the pilots of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner turned off fuel switches in what it described as an “almost certainly” intentional act.

While not naming any specific publication, the AAIB reiterated that such interpretations remain speculative until the investigation is formally concluded.

Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London, crashed seconds after take-off. The aircraft struck a medical college hostel, resulting in 260 fatalities, including 241 passengers and crew on board.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted the Centre three weeks to place on record the status of the investigation. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was hearing petitions seeking an independent, court-monitored probe into the crash.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), informed the court that the AAIB inquiry was in its final stage. “We are at the fag end of the enquiry, and the report will soon be prepared,” Mehta said, adding that certain aircraft components had been sent abroad for specialised testing.

Taking note of the submission, the court directed the Centre to complete the exercise within three weeks and ordered that the report be filed in a sealed cover along with an affidavit detailing the procedural steps followed.

During the hearing, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the father of the pilot-in-command, reiterated the demand for a court-monitored investigation. He argued that past aviation accidents abroad had initially attributed blame to pilots before later inquiries revealed technical issues.

The Supreme Court cautioned against drawing conclusions about any aircraft model or airline without conclusive findings.

The AAIB said it remains committed to transparency, procedural integrity and the highest standards of aviation safety.

T20 World Cup: India hammer Namibia; Italy script historic win

New Delhi: India produced a dominant all-round display to crush Namibia by 93 runs in their T20 World Cup clash on Thursday at the Aruj Jaitley Stadium here, registering their biggest victory by runs in the tournament’s history.

Asked to bat first, India’s revamped opening pair set the tone early. Sanju Samson launched an aggressive assault with a brisk 22 off just eight balls before falling, but Ishan Kishan ensured the momentum never dipped. The left-hander tore into the Namibian attack, racing to a half-century in just 20 deliveries and hammering four consecutive sixes in the final over of the PowerPlay.

India surged to 86/1 at the end of six overs, and the tournament’s fastest team century followed soon after. However, Namibia clawed their way back through captain Gerhard Erasmus, who dismissed Kishan for a blistering 61 off 24 balls. Quick strikes from Bernard Scholtz and Erasmus reduced India from 104/1 to 124/4, briefly halting the charge.

Hardik Pandya then steadied the innings with a counterattacking 52 off 28 balls, featuring four sixes and four boundaries. He added 81 runs for the fifth wicket with Shivam Dube, whose 23 included a towering six. Namibia fought back at the death, with Erasmus completing an impressive four-wicket haul as India lost five wickets for just 10 runs in the final overs, finishing at 209/9.

Namibia began their chase brightly but unravelled against India’s spin attack. Jan Frylinck’s aggressive start offered early promise, while Louren Steenkamp struck boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking. The breakthrough came immediately after the PowerPlay when Varun Chakaravarthy bowled Steenkamp, triggering a collapse.

Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel combined to dismantle the middle order, claiming five wickets for 27 runs in a decisive phase. Erasmus briefly led the counterattack with a couple of sixes but fell attempting another big hit. With the required rate spiralling, Namibia slipped from 67/1 to 94/6, effectively ending the contest.

India’s pacers wrapped up the innings efficiently. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a pinpoint yorker to dismiss Ruben Trumpelmann, while Pandya picked up two wickets to cap his all-round effort. Namibia were eventually bowled out for 116 in 18.2 overs.

Brief Scores: India 209/9 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 61, Hardik Pandya 52; Gerhard Erasmus 4/20) beat Namibia 116 all out in 18.2 overs (Louren Steenkamp 29, Jan Frylinck 22; Varun Chakaravarthy 3/7, Hardik Pandya 2/21, Axar Patel 2/20) by 93 runs

Italy vs Nepal

Earlier in Mumbai, Italy scripted a historic moment at the Wankhede Stadium by defeating Nepal by 10 wickets, registering their first-ever win in a men’s World Cup match.

After electing to field, Italy delivered a disciplined bowling and fielding performance to restrict Nepal to 123 in 19.3 overs. Nepal struggled to build partnerships after losing early wickets. Captain Rohit Paudel attempted to inject urgency with a quick 23 off 14 balls, while Aarif Sheikh top-scored with 27. A late cameo from Karan KC (18) provided some impetus, but Italy’s spin-heavy attack kept tight control.

Leg-spinner Crishan Kalugamage starred with three wickets, removing key batters including Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee. Off-spinner Benjamin Manenti was equally effective, conceding just nine runs in his four overs while claiming two wickets.

Chasing a modest target, Italy’s openers Anthony Mosca and Justin Mosca produced a commanding display. The duo dominated the Nepalese bowlers with fearless strokeplay, reaching the target in just 12.4 overs without losing a wicket. Justin Mosca struck an unbeaten 60, while Anthony Mosca smashed 62 not out, sealing a landmark victory for the tournament debutants.

Italy’s emphatic win marked one of the standout moments of the day, underlining the growing competitiveness among associate nations in the tournament.

Brief Scores: Nepal 123 all out in 19.3 overs (Rohit Paudel 23, Aarif Sheikh 27; Crishan Kalugamage 3/18, Benjamin Manenti 2/9) defeated by Italy 124 in 12.4 overs (Anthony Mosca 62, Justin Mosca 60) by 10 wickets.

T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka Crush Oman to top Group B

Sri Lanka continued their strong start to the T20 World Cup with a commanding 105-run victory over Oman on Thursday at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium near Kandy in Sri Lanka, moving to the top of the Group B points table.

Batting first after being put in, Sri Lanka recovered from early setbacks to post a formidable 225/5 in 20 overs. Opener Pathum Nissanka departed early, leaving the hosts at 42/2, but Pavan Rathnayake and Kusal Mendis stabilised the innings with a fluent partnership.

Rathnayake counterattacked with a series of boundaries to shift the momentum, while Mendis provided steady acceleration. Rathnayake brought up his half-century before being dismissed, and Mendis followed with a well-crafted 61.

Sri Lanka’s innings gathered significant pace in the latter half, led by Dasun Shanaka’s explosive cameo. Shanaka smashed five sixes and two boundaries to reach a 19-ball half-century — the fastest by a Sri Lankan in T20 Internationals. Kamindu Mendis added late runs with a pair of sixes as Sri Lanka surged past the 220 mark.

Chasing a daunting target of 226, Oman struggled to gain early momentum. Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana struck in the PowerPlay, reducing Oman to 36/3 with their top-order batters falling for single-digit scores.

Mohammad Nadeem attempted to anchor the chase, compiling an unbeaten 53, while Wasim Ali contributed briefly during a 42-run middle-order stand. However, the required rate continued to climb as Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained tight control.

A controversial caught-behind decision against Wasim Ali triggered a collapse, with Oman losing four wickets in quick succession, including two run-outs. Nadeem’s resistance ensured Oman batted through their 20 overs but they were restricted to 120/9.

Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling performance was led by Theekshana (2/11) and Chameera (2/19), sealing a comprehensive win. With their second successive victory, Sri Lanka strengthened their position at the top of Group B, while Oman were left searching for their first win of the tournament.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 225/5 in 20 overs (Kusal Mendis 61, Pavan Rathnayake 60, Dasun Shanaka 50; Jiten Ramanandi 2/41) beat Oman 120/9 in 20 overs (Mohammad Nadeem 53*; Maheesh Theekshana 2/11, Dushmantha Chameera 2/19) by 105 runs

Goyal urges MedTech startups to leverage FTAs, go global

New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday called upon India’s medtech startups to expand beyond the domestic market and leverage India’s growing network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to access global opportunities.

Addressing the Pfizer INDovation Startup Showcase Programme in New Delhi, the minister said affordable and scalable medical technologies developed in India have the potential to serve not only remote parts of the country but also international markets.

Goyal highlighted that nine FTAs concluded over the last three years now cover 38 countries. He said these agreements provide India with market access to nearly 70 per cent of global GDP, with Indian products benefiting from mostly zero-duty access in many markets.

He listed key trade partners and blocs with which India has agreements, including the 27-nation European Union, the four-nation European Free Trade Association (EFTA block), the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Agreements with Japan, South Korea and ASEAN nations had been concluded earlier.

The minister, according to an official release, urged startups to actively participate in global fairs and exhibitions, stating that international exposure is critical for scaling businesses. He assured that the Commerce Ministry would support delegations and noted that Indian missions in more than 190 countries are available to assist innovators exploring overseas markets.

Goyal also encouraged collaboration between Indian startups and global companies operating across multiple countries, saying such partnerships could help innovators access developed markets and strengthen technological capabilities. Emphasising the economic benefits of scale, the minister said affordable and scalable medtech products can significantly reduce costs while improving quality through economies of scale.

He called for greater visibility of entrepreneurial success stories and urged Startup India, the private sector and the media to continue supporting entrepreneurs. “Failure is not a stigma but a stepping stone to success,” Goyal said, citing the example of Abraham Lincoln’s journey before becoming President of the United States.

Goyal referred to the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) near Visakhapatnam and expressed interest in establishing a similar facility in North India. He suggested that such a hub could be developed in states like Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh, or within National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) projects, with dedicated land and co-working spaces for medical device startups.

He also proposed setting up tinkering laboratories in nearby schools to create a broader innovation ecosystem.

Announcing institutional support measures, the minister said three additional National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) would be established, alongside the upgradation of seven existing NIPERs. He further announced that a new National Institute of Design (NID) would be set up in East India.

Highlighting incentives for intellectual property filings, Goyal said startups receive an 80 per cent rebate on IP-related fees. He assured entrepreneurs of continuous support through a dedicated Startup India team.

Goyal noted that more than 200,000 startups are registered in India and reiterated the government’s commitment to making India a reliable and trusted global partner in innovation.

Concluding his address, the minister quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day message encouraging young innovators to bring forward their ideas, stating that the government stands ready to partner with them.

World Bank approves $245mln resilience package for Himachal Pradesh

New Delhi: The World Bank has cleared a USD245 million financing package to support disaster recovery and climate-resilient development in Himachal Pradesh. The programme will directly benefit nearly 2.3 million people across the State and help rebuild critical infrastructure damaged by extreme weather events.

The financing carries a maturity period of 16 years, including a grace period of three and a half years.

Himachal Pradesh has faced repeated climate shocks in recent years. Intense rainfall during the 2023 and 2025 monsoon seasons caused widespread destruction. The disasters led to loss of lives and damage to homes, roads, and public utilities.

Authorities estimate economic losses at around USD1 billion. Water supply, sanitation networks, and farm output also suffered setbacks.

The initiative, titled Resilient Action for Development and Disaster Recovery Himachal Pradesh Project, will strengthen infrastructure planning and promote climate-resilient construction.

The State will rebuild bridges, roads, and public facilities using improved design standards. Officials expect these upgrades to reduce future risks and improve access to schools, markets, and workplaces.

The project places a strong focus on livelihoods. More than one million women will gain better access to services and income opportunities, the Bank said in a release. The plan supports farming, handicrafts, and rural tourism. It will also fund community-owned enterprises to create or improve around 12,000 jobs. These investments aim to expand market access for artisans, producers, and farmers.

Paul Procee, Acting Country Director of the World Bank in India, said resilient development can drive long-term growth despite climate challenges. He noted that the programme will help the state rebuild stronger infrastructure while mobilising USD100 million in private capital for disaster-risk financing and insurance solutions.

The World Bank will implement the programme in partnership with Agence Française de Développement. The collaboration will strengthen early warning systems and disaster preparedness. The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure will provide technical knowledge for sustainable rebuilding, including the restoration of more than 250 bridges, roads, and footbridges. These improvements will serve over one million residents.

Odisha signs MoU with Airawat to drive AI-enabled urban governance

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards strengthening urban governance through technology, the Housing & Urban Development (H&UD) Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airawat Research Foundation (ARF) on Wednesday, in collaboration with the eGov Foundation.

The partnership aims to advance AI-enabled, citizen-centric urban governance by integrating data systems and deploying intelligent solutions to improve service delivery across the state’s urban ecosystem, the ARF said.

The collaboration will focus on augmenting property tax systems using AI-driven analytics to enhance efficiency and revenue optimisation. It will also work towards developing unified governance dashboards that provide real-time insights to administrators, enabling faster and more informed decision-making.

A key component of the initiative is the strengthening of Smart Integrated Command and Control Centres, which will function as regional digital hubs. In a post on X, the ARF said these centres will bring together data from multiple civic systems onto an integrated platform, ensuring smarter, faster, and more responsive public services.

Officials said the initiative represents a decisive move toward technology-driven governance, with a strong emphasis on transparency, accountability, and citizen responsiveness. By leveraging AI and data integration, the State aims to streamline urban management processes and enhance the overall quality of municipal services.

The engagement with ARF is expected to facilitate the design and implementation of scalable AI use cases tailored to Odisha’s urban needs. Meanwhile, the collaboration with eGov Foundation will strengthen digital systems and ensure seamless integration across platforms, the H&UD said.

Bharat bandh disrupts services across states

New Delhi: A nationwide ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by a joint forum of central trade unions on February 12 has caused disruptions in banking, transport and other public services across several states, even as some regions reported limited impact.

The strike was backed by major trade unions including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC. Representatives of the joint forum of the unioins have claimed participation of nearly 30 crore workers and that the bandh would affect operations in more than 600 districts across the country.

Banking services were among the key sectors impacted. While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not declare a holiday, employee unions including AIBEA, AIBOA and BEFI supported the strike in protest against the four labour codes. Several public sector banks flagged possible service disruptions.

State Bank of India informed the BSE that customer services could be affected to a limited extent despite arrangements for normal functioning. Bank of Baroda and UCO Bank also cautioned customers about potential disruptions in branch operations and cheque clearances. Digital banking services were largely expected to remain functional.

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur told media that services in electricity, banking, insurance, transport, health, education, gas and water supply could be affected due to the strike.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) extended support to the bandh, describing it as part of its campaign against the India–US interim trade agreement. SKM leaders alleged that the agreement would adversely affect farmers by exposing domestic agriculture to cheaper imports.

The Centre, however, has defended the trade deal, with Union Minister Piyush Goyal calling it a milestone in India’s economic trajectory. He stated that sensitive farm sectors had been protected and that Indian exports would benefit from zero-duty access to the United States.

In Parliament, Congress MPs staged a protest outside the complex, expressing solidarity with workers and farmers. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi voiced support for the bandh, stating that labour reforms, trade agreements and concerns over MGNREGA had triggered widespread anxiety among workers and the agrarian community.

“Today, millions of workers and farmers across the country are on the streets, raising their voices for their rights. Workers fear that the four Labour Codes will weaken their rights. Farmers are apprehensive that trade agreements will harm their livelihoods. And weakening or scrapping MGNREGA could take away the last support system for villages,” Gandhi said in a social media post, adding that he stands firmly with the issues of workers and farmers and with their struggle.

“The Congress stands firmly with the labourers and marginalised people of India who are on the streets today against the wide range of anti-people decisions of the Central Government,” said Congress leader K C Venugopal in a post on X.

States reported varying degrees of disruption. In Jharkhand, trade union members staged demonstrations at the gates of coal companies and public sector undertakings. In Odisha, employees associated with central trade unions observed a day-long strike, with AIUTUC members blocking train movement at Balasore railway station.

Inter-state transport services were affected in the southern region. Government bus operations between Tamil Nadu and Kerala were suspended, causing inconvenience to commuters. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses did not operate from Vadasery Bus Stand, while Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses ran only up to the inter-state border at Kaliakkavilai.

In contrast, West Bengal witnessed minimal disruption. Vehicles operated normally, and attendance at government and private offices remained largely unaffected. However, demonstrations were held by student groups in Kolkata in support of the bandh call amid heavy police deployment.

The Bharat Bandh once again highlighted tensions between trade unions and the Centre over labour reforms, economic policies and trade agreements, with protests and service disruptions reported from multiple parts of the country.
