Govt reviews preparations for Puri Rath Yatra 2026

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Saturday reviewed preparations for the world-famous Puri Rath Yatra 2026 and directed all departments to complete arrangements well in advance of the festival scheduled in July.

This was the fourth review meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, that assessed the implementation of decisions taken in earlier reviews and evaluated the progress of ongoing preparations. According to an official release, senior officials from key departments, including Home, Law, Police and district administration, participated in the meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

Ensuring smooth and disciplined pulling of chariots was a key focus area. It was discussed that excessive entry of pass holders into the cordoned zone creates difficulties during the procession. To address this, the number of cordon passes is likely to be significantly reduced this year. The Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple informed that chariot construction began on April 20 on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, with a technical committee monitoring progress.

Out of the required 865 pieces of timber for chariot construction, 576 have already been procured, and the remaining collection is underway. The meeting also stressed ensuring the strength and durability of chariot ropes.

Infrastructure works linked to the festival are nearing completion. These include the Jagannath Ballav pilgrim centre, redevelopment of Acharya Harihar Square, multi-level parking at Digabareni and construction of Yatrika Parking-1. Restoration and renovation work at the Gundicha Temple is also progressing and expected to be completed before the festival, according to the release.

To improve public amenities, 50 high-mast lights will be installed along the Bada Danda for better illumination. Six bio-toilet blocks with 18 units will be set up along the Puri beach, while around 1,600 temporary toilets will be arranged at police camps, parking areas and public locations.

Preparations for handling heavy rainfall were also reviewed, with 23 locations identified for water drainage using high-capacity pump sets. Eviction drives along the Bada Danda are underway to facilitate smooth chariot movement and are expected to be completed by May. The Puri municipality has identified 21 parking locations for the festival.

The Health and Family Welfare Department is setting up eight temporary hospitals with 10 beds each at various locations to handle emergencies and reduce pressure on existing hospitals. The Puri-Konark road overbridge at Matiapada is in the final stage and is expected to become operational before the Rath Yatra, improving traffic flow.

The meeting also reviewed traffic management, deployment of police forces, installation of permanent and temporary CCTV systems, road repairs, sanitation measures and control room operations. The Railways will set up eight additional ticket counters to manage the expected surge in passengers.

To address congestion and sanitation issues, it was decided to regulate the distribution of free cooked food along the Grand Road. Designated locations will be identified nearby to facilitate such distribution without disrupting the chariot procession or affecting cleanliness

Trump cancels US envoys’ Pakistan trip amid stalled Iran talks

Diplomatic setback highlights widening gap between US and Iran as tensions over Strait of Hormuz and regional threats intensify

US President Donald Trump has cancelled a planned visit by his envoys to Pakistan for talks related to the ongoing conflict with Iran, signalling a setback in diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians. Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work!” He further claimed there was “tremendous infighting and confusion” within Iran’s leadership, adding, “we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!”

The proposed US delegation was to include envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Earlier indications suggested Vice President JD Vance would remain on standby but not be directly involved. The cancellation of even this lower-level delegation reflects the widening gap between Washington and Tehran.

According to earlier remarks by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the US had hoped for “positive developments” from the proposed meeting. However, Iran had denied that any such talks were scheduled, underscoring the lack of alignment between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Pakistan for bilateral discussions with the government in Islamabad. Following talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Sharif said on X that the two sides had a “warm, cordial exchange of views” on the regional situation and discussed strengthening bilateral relations. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar noted that the meeting lasted around two hours and emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for regional stability.

Araghchi, while expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s mediation efforts, indicated that Iran remains open to negotiations but is unlikely to shift significantly from its existing positions.

A key point of contention continues to be the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that both sides have effectively blockaded. The prominence of this issue—previously not central before the conflict—suggests that resolving the crisis may take longer than anticipated.

Tensions have also been heightened by warnings from Iranian lawmakers. According to BBC News, Iranian MP Mahmoud Nabavian warned that any renewed US attack could trigger severe consequences for the region. He stated that Iran’s response could lead to “the complete cessation of regional oil production” and “the destruction of all infrastructure,” along with widespread displacement.

The developments come even as the US has extended a ceasefire with Iran for an unspecified period. However, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said American forces remain “locked and loaded,” indicating continued military readiness alongside stalled diplomatic efforts.

The latest turn of events underscores deep mistrust between the two sides and highlights the challenges facing mediation efforts, with both diplomatic and military signals shaping the trajectory of the conflict.

IMD issues heatwave advisory as temperatures soar across India

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, on Saturday issued an advisory as large parts of the country continue to face rising temperatures and heatwave-like conditions.

According to the latest assessment, daytime temperatures in several regions of northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently hovering between 40°C and 44°C, with Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan recording a peak of 44.5°C.

In many areas, temperatures are significantly above normal by around 5°C or more, signalling increasing heat stress conditions, according to an official statement.

The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to develop in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of central India over the coming days.

Coastal and eastern regions are expected to experience hot and humid weather, while warm night conditions may persist in parts of north India, adding to discomfort and health risks.

Weather forecasts suggest that temperatures over northwest India will remain largely stable until April 17, followed by a gradual decline. However, central India and adjoining regions may see fluctuating trends, with periods of rise followed by easing temperatures.

In view of the situation, the IMD has urged people to follow heatwave safety measures, such as avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and limiting outdoor physical activity during extreme heat. Special precautions have been advised for children, the elderly, and people with existing health conditions.

The forecast indicates that heatwave conditions may continue intermittently over the next week across parts of northwest and central India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha, as well as select southern regions like Kerala and Mahe. Coastal states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are also expected to face humid conditions.

The IMD’s broader outlook for April to June 2026 suggests above-normal heatwave days in several parts of east, central, and northwest India as well as the southeastern peninsula, highlighting the need for sustained preparedness during the summer season.

The department has made detailed heatwave advisories, including safety guidelines and preventive measures, available on its official website and continues to monitor evolving conditions closely, issuing regular updates to help reduce health risks linked to extreme heat.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy flags off Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1

New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy, along with Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu, on Saturday formally flagged off the flight hardware of Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 – India’s first privately developed orbital rocket.

The event marked a major milestone in the country’s private space sector and Telangana’s expanding aerospace ambitions.

The ceremony marked the official dispatch of the rocket hardware from Hyderabad to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, where Skyroot Aerospace is preparing for India’s first private orbital launch attempt in the coming months, the CMO of Telangana said in a post on X.

During the event, Anumula said the occasion represents a significant step in Telangana’s journey to position itself as a global hub for aerospace and advanced technologies.

He highlighted that Vikram-1 has been fully designed and developed in Hyderabad, calling it a matter of pride for the state.

“Skyroot has developed India’s first privately built orbital rocket to carry satellites into space. The company launched its first rocket in 2022, and reaching the stage of orbital launch in such a short time is a remarkable achievement,” the chief minister said.

Skyroot Aerospace, one of India’s leading private space startups, is now moving closer to its first orbital mission with Vikram-1, which is designed to place small satellites into space.

Anumula noted that Telangana is currently ranked among the top states in India’s aerospace sector, with major global aerospace companies such as Boeing, Airbus, and Safran already operating in the state.

He also reiterated the government’s long-term vision of making Telangana a global leader in aerospace by 2047, identifying the sector as a key driver of future economic growth.

According to him, the state has also recorded strong performance in engineering exports. Citing Central Government data, he said Telangana registered the highest growth of 117.9% in engineering exports among Indian states between 2023-24 and 2024-25, with aircraft components and defence equipment contributing significantly to this rise.

The chief minister stressed that the government is prioritising skill development to support high-tech industries like aerospace.

He outlined initiatives being implemented through Young India Skills University, Advanced Technology Centres (ATCs), and upgraded polytechnic institutions. He also mentioned plans to bring ATCs and polytechnics under a unified structure to ensure industry-aligned curriculum and standardised training.

“Our focus is on providing the best training to trainers in these institutions. Tata Technologies is providing training to our trainers in ATCs across the state,” he said.

Trump sends Witkoff, Kushner to Pakistan for Iran peace talks amid ongoing conflict

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has decided to send his Middle East envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Pakistan to participate in renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has reportedly continued for nearly eight weeks.

The White House confirmed the development on Friday, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stating that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to Islamabad for discussions involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. She expressed optimism that the talks could help advance negotiations towards a possible agreement, according to theguardian.com.

Leavitt indicated that the US side hopes the engagement will be constructive and contribute to progress in the peace process.

As part of his regional outreach, Araghchi has announced visits to Pakistan, Russia, and Oman to explore possibilities for restarting stalled peace negotiations. The discussions are expected to focus on creating conditions for a long-term arrangement, including a potential US-Israeli commitment to halt attacks on Iran, which has emerged as a key demand from Tehran.

US Vice-President JD Vance, who had earlier led a delegation in previous rounds of talks in Islamabad, will not travel this time but will remain on standby. The White House said senior US leadership, including the president, vice-president, and secretary of state, would closely monitor developments from Washington, with Vance ready to travel if required.

Reports also indicate that Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who participated in earlier discussions, is not expected to attend the current round.

Separately, Araghchi is expected to hold discussions with Oman regarding possible arrangements for managing the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically significant maritime route.

Iran has maintained that talks will not resume unless US restrictions on its ports are lifted, while the United States has demanded verifiable guarantees regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and conditions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

According to emerging proposals, Iran is reportedly considering restructuring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium by dividing it into portions and gradually reducing enrichment levels in exchange for phased sanctions relief. Tehran is also exploring the possibility of involving China as a guarantor in any future agreement.

During Araghchi’s visit to Moscow, Russia is expected to reiterate its earlier proposal to assist in managing parts of Iran’s uranium stockpile.

Meanwhile, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on state television that the focus of negotiations has shifted from the nuclear issue to securing an end to the conflict in a way that protects Iran’s national interests.

MP Sasmit Patra flags traffic chaos in Bhubaneswar, seeks CM’s urgent intervention

Bhubaneswar: Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sasmit Patra has written to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, raising concerns over widespread traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar caused by unplanned road works across the city.

In his letter dated April 24, Dr. Patra highlighted that multiple road repair, excavation, and diversion works are being carried out simultaneously at major roads and key junctions without proper coordination, resulting in severe inconvenience to commuters.

While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure development, the MP pointed out that the execution lacks planning, leading to “artificial traffic jams,” especially during peak hours. He noted that the situation is affecting office-goers, school transport, emergency services, and the general public.

The letter also flagged several issues contributing to the problem, including the absence of clearly marked diversion routes, inadequate deployment of traffic personnel, poor coordination between civic agencies and traffic authorities, and roadwork being carried out during high-traffic hours.

Dr. Patra urged the chief minister to direct authorities such as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Bhubaneswar Development Authority, and Commissionerate Police to take immediate corrective measures.

He recommended implementing planned traffic diversions before starting work, restricting major construction during peak hours, ensuring proper signage and barricading, and improving coordination among agencies.

Calling for urgent intervention, the MP stressed that a more structured approach would help reduce public inconvenience while allowing development projects to proceed efficiently.
