Odisha power utilities activate emergency response amid severe heatwave

Bhubaneswar: As Odisha reels under an intense heatwave with temperatures touching 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state, Tata Power-led power distribution companies have stepped up emergency preparedness measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during peak summer demand.

The state has recorded a peak power demand of 6,739 MW this year, nearly 300 MW higher than last year’s highest demand, putting significant pressure on the electricity distribution network.

To tackle possible disruptions caused by extreme heat and seasonal storms, the discoms have activated a comprehensive emergency response mechanism across Odisha.

More than 26,000 field personnel, including maintenance crews and breakdown response teams, have been deployed across the state for rapid restoration and operational support, according to a statement by Tata Power.

In addition, over 5,000 distribution transformers and 60,000 electric poles have been strategically positioned at different locations to handle technical failures and emergency situations swiftly.

The Centralized Power Distribution Technology Centre is also monitoring the power network round the clock to identify and respond to disruptions in real time.

To assist consumers during outages or emergencies, a 200-seat customer care centre has been made operational on a 24×7 basis. Consumers can register complaints and seek assistance through the utility’s mobile application, WhatsApp services, and IVRS platforms.

The power utilities said teams are working in challenging weather conditions to maintain network stability and ensure a reliable electricity supply during the ongoing heatwave across Odisha.
