Bhubaneswar: A total of 28 athletes will represent Odisha at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2026, scheduled to be held at Kalinga Stadium from June 24.

The five-day event will witness the participation of more than 600 athletes from 26 states across the country. Top officials of the Athletics Federation of India and senior athletes addressed a press conference on the eve of the event.

Some of the country’s top athletes, including 5,000m national record holder Gulveer Singh and World Championships finalist high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, will compete on a brand-new track. The winners of the competition will qualify for the 2026 Asian Games, which will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

Hosted by the Odisha Athletic Association, the championship will feature nearly 45 events over five days.

Dr. Yeddula Vijay, Director of the Department of Sports and Youth Services, said there are high expectations from the Odisha athletes, as competing on home ground will give them an added advantage.

Athletes will try their luck in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, 110m / 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, 3000m Steeplechase, Half Marathon Race Walk, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw and Javelin Throw, along with the 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x400m Mixed Relays.

Odisha restores linguistic roots with 64 official name corrections

Cuttack is now Kataka, Balasore is Baleshwar, Berhampur becomes Brahmapur, and Rourkela will henceforth be officially written as Raurkela in English records.

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move aimed at preserving Odisha’s linguistic heritage and cultural identity, the State Government has officially notified the corrected English spellings of 64 administrative units across 26 districts. The notification, issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on June 22, directs that the revised spellings will come into effect from the date of publication in the Odisha Gazette.

The changes cover districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, blocks, municipalities, NACs and municipal corporations. The government clarified that the exercise relates only to the English spellings of place names and does not alter the original names of the administrative units.

Among the major changes are Angul becoming Anugola, Bargarh becoming Baragada, Deogarh becoming Debagada, Khurda becoming Khordha, Nayagarh becoming Nayagada, Kendrapara becoming Kendrapada, Kandhamal becoming Kandhamala, Keonjhar becoming Kendujhar and Sundargarh becoming Sundaragada.

Several prominent towns and urban centres have also received revised spellings. Berhampur has been corrected to Brahmapur, Jeypore to Jayapur, Aska to Asika, Surada to Soroda, Talcher to Talacher, Athagarh to Athagada, Rairakhol to Redhakhol, Sonepur to Sonpur and Rourkela to Raurkela.

The notification follows a decision approved by the Odisha Cabinet, which sought to restore English spellings in conformity with Odia phonetics. According to the state government, many existing spellings were inherited from colonial-era transliterations that often failed to accurately reflect the pronunciation of place names in Odia.

The exercise gained momentum after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi raised concerns over inconsistencies between official English spellings and their original Odia forms. District administrations were subsequently asked to identify anomalies, while suggestions were also invited from elected representatives, scholars, cultural organisations and citizens.

A high-level committee headed by noted litterateur Pratibha Ray examined the proposals and historical records before finalising the recommendations. The proposed changes were placed in the public domain for a month to invite public feedback before being submitted to the government for approval.

Chief Secretary Anu Garg had earlier said the initiative was aimed at strengthening Odisha’s linguistic heritage and cultural identity. Following the notification, the state government has also requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to communicate the revised spellings to central agencies, including the Survey of India, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Indian Railways and the Department of Posts, so that official records can be updated accordingly.

The move is being viewed as part of Odisha’s broader effort to align official nomenclature with local language traditions, similar to earlier changes such as Bombay to Mumbai, Calcutta to Kolkata, Bangalore to Bengaluru and Orissa to Odisha.

With the notification now in force, the corrected spellings are expected to gradually find their way into government records, maps, signboards, railway documents, postal records and official communications across the country.

FIFA World Cup: Magical Messi shines as Argentina reach knockout stage

Two stunning goals from Lionel Messi were enough for Argentina to beat Austria in their Group J match of the FIFA World Cup.

With this victory, the South American country reached the knockout stage of the tournament.

The match also witnessed Messi breaking several records at Dallas Stadium.

He became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer (18 goals), surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose’s 16 strikes.

The mercurial striker also became the player with the most FIFA World Cup appearances by an individual (28).

In addition, he holds the record for the most minutes played in FIFA World Cup history (2,489).

He has also won more FIFA World Cup matches than any other player (18).

Messi got an opportunity to put his country ahead in the ninth minute from the penalty spot, but he failed as his strike went wide.

He netted a brilliant goal in the 38th minute, giving his side a 1-0 lead. His second goal in the 95th minute sent thousands of Argentine fans into celebration.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe scored a superb brace as France booked their place in the Round of 32. The match was also memorable for Mbappe as it was his 100th appearance for France.

Mbappe’s stunning left-footed goal in the 14th minute gave the European giants a 1-0 lead.

The Real Madrid striker added another one in the 54th minute, thanks to Zaid Tahseen and goalkeeper Ahmed Basil’s horrible blunder.

Ousmane Dembele netted France’s third and final goal in the 66th minute.

In another Group I match, Norway registered a hard-fought 3-2 win over Senegal. Erling Haaland scored a brace following Marcus Holmgren Pedersen’s opening goal, while Ismaila Sarr scored both goals for the African side.

Other Result: Group J: Jordan 1, Algeria 2

Europe heatwave intensifies as record temperatures loom across the continent

New Delhi: A severe heatwave across western Europe has triggered widespread health concerns, with multiple deaths reported in France, including two young children under investigation.

French authorities are investigating the deaths of two children, aged four and two, who were found inside their family’s car in the south-eastern town of Carpentras. Prosecutors indicated that extreme heat was the primary line of inquiry, although the exact cause of death remains under investigation.

The tragedy comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the prolonged heatwave. French officials also reported the deaths of three elderly people near Bordeaux due to heat-related health complications. Several other fatalities were linked to drowning incidents during the unusually hot weather, according to theguardian.com.

France has placed nearly half of its mainland departments under the highest heat alert, affecting around 35 million residents. Authorities have urged people to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals.

The national weather service warned that temperatures in several western and central regions could exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Cities including Bordeaux, Limoges, and Toulouse are expected to experience some of the hottest conditions of the year, while unusually warm nights are forecast to continue throughout the week.

The extreme weather has disrupted daily life across France. More than 1,300 schools were closed, while thousands of others adjusted schedules to allow students to leave early. Some train services around Paris were also suspended due to concerns over infrastructure safety.

The heatwave has also intensified across other parts of Europe.

Spain declared its first official heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 44 degrees Celsius in some regions. Weather officials warned that several areas were experiencing temperatures significantly above seasonal norms.

Germany faced a combination of heat and severe storms, leading organisers to suspend the final of the Berlin Open tennis tournament. In Belgium, meteorologists warned that temperatures could reach record levels, prompting transport operators to reduce some rail services.

The UK issued extreme heat warnings for large parts of southern England and Wales, with temperatures forecast to approach 39 degrees Celsius. Italy also placed several major cities, including Milan, Florence, and Rome, under red heat alerts.

Climate scientists have repeatedly warned that rising global temperatures are increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events. They say heatwaves are occurring earlier in the year, lasting longer, and affecting larger regions than in the past.
