Bihar sports minister proposes player exchange with Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh wrapped up a four-day visit to Odisha on Sunday, proposing player exchange programmes and friendly matches between the two states.

She announced this during a meeting with Odisha Sports and Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Singh said Bihar wants to make full use of sporting facilities in both states through exchange programmes. The minister praised Odisha’s sports infrastructure and High-Performance Centres, calling them world-class.

She added that Bihar is also expanding its own sports infrastructure rapidly. According to her, Bihar is developing facilities for volleyball, basketball, cricket practice pitches and football in every Gram Panchayat.

Suraj said Odisha is scouting fresh sporting talent from the grassroots through initiatives like the CM Trophy. He said schools, sports institutions and government departments need strong coordination to build a sports ecosystem for rural athletes.

Bhupendra Singh Poonia, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Odisha’s Sports and Youth Services Department, also attended the meeting. He explained the state’s working model to the visiting delegation. He stressed the need to bring sports science into the curriculum to tackle coaching and training gaps and secure athletes’ futures.

Singh, in turn, called for awareness programmes on injury prevention, nutrition and rest for athletes.

Suraj welcomed the expansion of the Centre’s Khelo India centres. Referring to the Chintan Shivir held in Jammu and Kashmir, he proposed similar brainstorming sessions at the state and district level. He said state-level competitions ahead of national events help sharpen athletes’ performance.

Before the visit ended, Suraj introduced the Bihar delegation to Odisha’s culture and cuisine.

Singh thanked the state government for its hospitality. She said her visit to the Jagannath Temple in Puri, along with Bhubaneswar’s greenery and cleanliness, left a lasting impression on her. She described Odisha’s sports model as an inspiration for the rest of the country.

Odisha launches drug-free youth campaign at Kalinga Stadium

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Sunday launched a state-wide campaign to build a completely drug-free society. The initiative, called “Nisha Mukta Yuva – Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan,” began at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

The programme was organised by MY Bharat under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the event virtually. Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Suryabanshi Suraj watched the launch through virtual mode.

Governor Kambhampati administered the campaign’s pledge to those present. Calling the youth key pillars of nation-building, he urged them to choose sports, fitness, yoga, cultural values and social service over drug addiction.

He further said Odisha has become a major sporting hub in the country. He asked young people to turn to playgrounds and classrooms instead of drugs. He added that a drug-free society cannot be built by the government alone. Parents, teachers, institutions and the youth themselves must lead the movement.

Chief Minister Majhi announced that the campaign is not a one-day event. It will run continuously for the next 100 weeks, or two years. He said Gen Z and the youth are central to building a developed India by 2047.

He described drug addiction as more than a health issue. It weakens mental and physical strength, damages family finances and hurts the state’s economic growth, he said.

More than one crore young people joined the programme virtually at over 10,000 locations across India, in the presence of the PM.

The Odisha government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking. Majhi shared police data on enforcement between July 2024 and June 2026. Police destroyed illegal cannabis cultivation over 63,720 acres, valued at around Rs 1,911 crore. Authorities registered 2,576 cases and arrested 3,699 accused. They also seized 432 tonnes of cannabis worth Rs 2,106 crore.

The government is also strengthening treatment centres for recovery and rehabilitation, he said. He urged the public to report suspicious drug activity to police immediately.

Makhi raised concern over youth turning to dangerous substances like brown sugar, cocaine, synthetic drugs and injecting drugs. He said the government is acting on a war footing, pointing to recent synthetic drug seizures in Bhubaneswar and action against drug mafias in Balasore. He warned drug mafias to stop targeting the youth or face strict legal consequences, including bulldozer action. He urged young people to take the “Say No to Drugs” pledge.

The CM also called on educational institutions, youth organisations, NSS, MY Bharat volunteers, industries, NGOs and the media to support the movement under the slogan “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life and Progress.”

Minister Suraj also addressed the gathering, saying students from schools, colleges, MY Bharat youth clubs, NSS and sports hostels will lead the anti-drug movement in the state.

The event was live-streamed at 453 centres across Odisha. More than 1.6 lakh viewers and young people took part. Sports Department Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia delivered the welcome address. Departmental Director Yedulla Vijay gave the vote of thanks.

PM Modi launches ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva’ campaign, calls on youth to lead fight against drugs

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, calling upon young people to lead a mass movement against drug abuse and describing a drug-free generation as essential for achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047.

Addressing more than one crore young participants connected virtually from over 28,000 locations across the country, the Prime Minister said the campaign was not merely about individual well-being but a national mission involving families, educational institutions, social organisations and communities.

According to an official release, the campaign, which evolved from a pilot initiative launched in Varanasi last year, has now become a nationwide movement with the support of more than 125 spiritual organisations, several non-governmental organisations and volunteers under the Kashi Declaration.

“Today, as the nation has set the goal of a Viksit Bharat, it is imperative that the country’s youth remain physically and mentally fit, brimming with self-confidence, and permanently steer clear of destructive habits like drugs,” Modi said.

He said the campaign would run for 100 weeks, with dedicated activities every Sunday focusing on sports, art, culture, meditation, spirituality and community service to spread awareness against substance abuse. “The coming 100 Sundays will become 100 strong steps towards a completely drug-free India,” he said.

Describing India’s youth as the “Amrit generation”, the Prime Minister said they would play the central role in shaping the country’s future over the next two decades. He noted that while young Indians were making remarkable achievements in fields such as startups, artificial intelligence, science, sports and space, drug addiction had the potential to destroy individual aspirations as well as weaken families and society.

“When a young person falls into addiction, it is not just one individual who loses. A dream dies, a family suffers and the strength of the nation is weakened,” he said, adding that hostile forces also exploit drug trafficking to harm India’s youth and social fabric.

Modi urged society not to normalise or socially accept substance abuse, warning that drugs may provide a temporary “high” but ultimately push careers and family life into a permanent “low”.

Highlighting the importance of rehabilitation, the Prime Minister said addiction should be treated as a health issue rather than a matter of social stigma. “Even if a youth has mistakenly fallen into the trap of addiction, it absolutely does not mean that all doors are closed for them,” he said.

He appealed to families not to conceal addiction due to concerns about social prestige but instead seek medical assistance and professional counselling. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for open communication between parents and children to identify behavioural changes before addiction takes hold.

Modi also called upon professors and teachers in colleges and universities to include discussions on the dangers of drug abuse alongside regular coursework and to lead anti-drug campaigns on campuses, saying such efforts could bring about meaningful change among students.

He urged society to support those who have successfully overcome addiction, describing them as “real warriors” whose courage should be recognised instead of allowing them to be stigmatised for their past.

The Prime Minister said governments at both the Centre and in the states were intensifying action against drug traffickers and smugglers through stricter enforcement, increased arrests and large-scale drug seizures. Expressing confidence in the success of the campaign, he said India’s youth would protect their energy by remaining free from addiction and help accelerate the country’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.

Centre releases Rs 500 crore advance SDRF assistance to Odisha for flood relief

Bhubaneswar: The Central government has approved the advance release of Rs 500 crore to Odisha under the Central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support relief and response measures during the ongoing southwest monsoon.

The approval was granted by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah. Odisha, which had already received the first instalment of the Central share of the SDRF for the financial year 2026-27, has now been sanctioned the second instalment in advance to ensure the timely availability of funds for disaster relief operations.

According to an official statement, the advance release is aimed at strengthening the state’s relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by floods during the monsoon season.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the Central government has been closely monitoring the flood situation across the country in coordination with state governments since the onset of the southwest monsoon. It added that necessary support, including the pre-deployment of National Disaster Response Force teams and logistical assistance from the Ministry of Defence wherever required, has been provided.

The Centre said the financial assistance reflects its commitment to helping states respond effectively to flood-related emergencies and ensuring that adequate resources are available for relief measures.

A total of Rs 2,117.85 crore has been approved for flood-affected states under the Central share of the SDRF. Odisha’s allocation of Rs 500 crore has been released as an advance of the second instalment for the 2026-27 financial year.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the timely financial assistance.

In a post on X, he said: “The government of India has approved the advance release of ₹500 crore as the second instalment of the Central share of SDRF for Odisha for FY 2026–27, providing timely support amid the ongoing flood situation. This assistance will further strengthen the State’s rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts, provide necessary support to affected families, and accelerate the restoration of normalcy in flood-affected areas. I express my sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji for standing firmly with the people of Odisha and extending this timely support.”

Separately, Majhi has assigned responsibilities to cabinet members to manage the flood situation. Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo has been given charge of Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts. Deputy Chief Minister Prabhati Parida has been given charge of Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has been given charge of Puri district. Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik has been given charge of Mayurbhanj and Kendujhar districts, to oversee relief and restoration work.

Along with this, other ministers will visit their respective districts as ministers-in-charge and oversee relief and restoration work there.

The state has been battling widespread flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains and the release of excess water from the Hirakud Dam, with 20 districts affected and nearly seven lakh people impacted.

According to reports, the Mahanadi river system inundated hundreds of villages, damaging homes, roads and agricultural land. At least three people lost their lives in Keonjhar district during the floods, while thousands of residents were evacuated to safer places and housed in relief camps. The Odisha government, assisted by ODRAF, NDRF and Fire Services personnel, has carried out extensive rescue, relief and restoration operations as floodwaters begin to recede.
