Bargarh (Odisha): The 78th edition of the globally renowned Bargarh Dhanu Jatra began in Odisha’s Bargarh district on December 24, 2025, ushering in eleven days of immersive cultural celebration that will continue until January 3, 2026. Recognised as the world’s largest open-air theatre, the festival once again transforms the entire town into a living stage drawn from the legends of Lord Krishna.

As the festival unfolds, Bargarh city assumes the identity of mythological Mathura, while Ambapalli is reimagined as Gopapur, the pastoral land of Krishna’s childhood. Flowing quietly between the two, the Jira River takes on the symbolic role of the sacred Yamuna, anchoring the narrative landscape for dramatic enactments depicting divine childhood episodes and the reign of King Kansa.

The festive atmosphere has taken over the town, with decorative arches, towering stage installations and illuminated streets welcoming thousands of visitors. Homes, marketplaces and public spaces seamlessly merge into the theatrical setting, blurring the line between daily life and mythology.
At the heart of the celebrations stands the imposing Kansa Durbar at Hatpada, the principal stage of the festival. Rising nearly 70 feet high and stretching about 120 feet wide, the grand court has been meticulously crafted by a team of 55 artisans, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship and scale.

Unlike conventional theatre formats, Dhanu Jatra dissolves the divide between performers and spectators. Actors move freely through streets and public spaces, while audiences become part of the unfolding narrative, experiencing mythology in real time across the town.

The formal inauguration is scheduled for this evening on the vast open-air stage, marking the beginning of nightly performances. As darkness sets in, the dramatic presence of Kansa dominates Mathura, while Vasuki and adjoining areas resonate with vibrant enactments and devotional fervour.

On the auspicious occasion of the renowned Dhanu Yatra of Bargarh, President Droupadi Murmu extended her heartfelt greetings to all citizens of the country, especially the people of Odisha.

Attracting visitors from across Odisha and far beyond, the Bargarh Dhanu Jatra continues to stand as a powerful expression of living tradition, celebrating Odisha’s cultural legacy through storytelling, community participation and timeless folklore.
