New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of meetings with Japanese business leaders in Tokyo to strengthen the India-Japan economic partnership, with a focus on investment, manufacturing, semiconductors, AI, and innovation.

Goyal held a roundtable with Keidanren, the Japan Business Federation, which was co-chaired by Tatsuo Yasunaga. Hironori Kamezawa, Yuji Fukasawa and other members of Keidanren’s Committee on South Asia participated in the discussion along with Indian business leaders and industry representatives, the minister said in a detailed post on X.

The discussions come as India and Japan mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, while Keidanren completes 80 years.

Goyal highlighted the opportunities emerging from India’s economic growth and expanding business landscape. He also referred to the outcomes of the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to double the number of Japanese companies operating in India.

The minister also highlighted the ambition to attract JPY 10 trillion in Japanese investment to India over the coming decade.

Goyal also invited Japanese industry leaders to deepen their engagement with India in manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and innovation. He said stronger participation by Japanese companies could help strengthen bilateral economic ties and position India as a stronger base for global exports.

During his visit, Goyal also met a delegation from Tokyo Electron led by Takeshi Okubo, Corporate Officer and Executive Vice President of the Global Sales Division and India Business.

The meeting focused on Tokyo Electron’s investments in India’s semiconductor ecosystem and opportunities to strengthen cooperation in advanced manufacturing. Goyal highlighted the growing potential of India’s semiconductor and electronics ecosystem for Japanese companies.

Goyal also met Juro Baba, Representative Director of Mitsubishi Corporation. They discussed opportunities to build on the company’s presence in India, which spans more than nine decades, and expand cooperation in mobility, energy and infrastructure.

The minister further met Toshiaki Nagasato, President and Representative Director of Meiji Seika Pharma Co. Ltd. Their discussions focused on strengthening India-Japan cooperation in pharmaceuticals and expanding the company’s manufacturing and research and development footprint in India.

Goyal said India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem offers significant opportunities for Japanese companies to expand their operations and pursue long-term growth.

The engagements underline India’s efforts to deepen economic cooperation with Japan and attract greater Japanese participation across key sectors of the Indian economy.
