Ancy Sojan breaks national record, Kujur wins 100m title

Bhubaneswar: Kerala long jumper Ancy Sojan set a new national record with a jump of 6.88m in the women’s long jump event at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, currently underway at Kalinga Stadium.

The Asian Games gold medallist also broke legendary athlete Anju Bobby George’s national record of 6.83m, set at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Sojan dedicated her record-breaking gold medal performance to her father. “He wanted someone in the family to be a national record holder. The gold medal will be a precious gift to him,” the jubilant long jumper said.

Kalinga Stadium also witnessed another national record, with high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare clearing 2.31m. The 31-year-old Maharashtra athlete broke the previous national record of 2.29m set by Tejaswin Shankar in 2018.

Odisha’s Animesh Kujur became the fastest man at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships.

The Odisha sprinter clocked 10.28 seconds to win the men’s 100m race, while the silver medal went to Maharashtra’s Pranav Gurav, who clocked 10.39 seconds.

Another Odisha sprinter, Dondapati Mruty, finished third with a time of 10.43 seconds.

Shot put (AGQ Mark 19.41m): Karanveer Singh (Punjab) 20.49m, Samardeep Gill (Madhya Pradesh) 20.40m, Tajinderpal Singh Toor (Punjab) 20.27m.

Women: 100m: Sudeshna Shivankar (Maharashtra) 11.59 seconds, Sneha SS (Karnataka) 11.65 seconds, Amasha De Silva (Sri Lanka) 11.70 seconds.
