Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has written to Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, urging the Centre to support the nomination of Puri’s Ratha Yatra for inscription on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In a letter dated August 1, Majhi drew the minister’s attention to a proposal already submitted by the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), Puri, seeking global recognition for the centuries-old festival.
The CM described the Ratha Yatra as more than a religious observance, calling it a civilisational tradition that reflects India’s cultural diversity, inclusivity, spirituality, craftsmanship, music, dance and community participation.
He noted that the festival draws millions of devotees and visitors from around the world every year and remains one of the most enduring symbols of India’s living heritage.
According to Majhi, its inscription on the UNESCO list would strengthen global recognition of India’s intangible cultural traditions while supporting their preservation for future generations.
Majhi stated that SJTA had already submitted all the required supporting material in the prescribed formats for the nomination to be considered.
He requested the Union minister’s personal intervention to facilitate the examination of the proposal. He sought the Ministry of Culture’s support in advancing the nomination with UNESCO at the earliest opportunity, citing the festival’s cultural significance and its message of harmony and human values.
Majhi added that the Odisha government and SJTA would extend any further information or assistance the Ministry might need during the process, and expressed hope for the Centre’s support in taking the proposal forward on priority.
