Bhubaneswar: A depression formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts has moved further northwestwards, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system moved at a speed of 10 kmph over the last three hours. It was centred at 11:30 am IST on Sunday, near latitude 20.8°N and longitude 88.2°E, the IMD said in a series of posts on X.
The depression was located about 90 km south of Sagar Island in West Bengal, 110 km southeast of Digha, 150 km east of Chandbali in Odisha, and 150 km east-southeast of Balasore, officials said.
The IMD said the system is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours. It is expected to cross the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Paradip and Sagar Island around forenoon or noon on Sunday, July 27.
Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, is likely over Odisha on July 26 and 27. Chhattisgarh is likely to receive similar heavy rainfall on July 27, while Gangetic West Bengal may witness isolated very heavy rainfall on both days, the weather department added.
