New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu virtually inaugurated the IGNOU Regional Centre and Skill Centre at Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj, on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards expanding access to higher and skill-based education and strengthening learning opportunities in the region.

She also launched the #SkilltheNation Challenge under the Skilling for AI Readiness initiative of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The programme was unveiled at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, according to an official statement.

Speaking at the event, Murmu highlighted the growing global influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that it is rapidly reshaping economies, workplaces, education systems, and service delivery models. She said that for a youthful country like India, AI represents not merely a technological advancement but a powerful tool to drive social and economic transformation.

She reiterated India’s long-standing belief that technology must function as an enabler – strengthening inclusion, widening access, and creating opportunities across all sections of society. The president stressed that the application of AI should help narrow social, economic, and technological gaps, with particular focus on reaching marginalized and underserved communities.

Expressing satisfaction over the enthusiasm shown by students, the president said young learners are actively preparing themselves for a future shaped by innovation and opportunity. She urged them to use their skills and technological knowledge responsibly – to serve society, address real-world challenges, and uplift others. She also commended Members of Parliament who have completed AI learning modules, saying their participation demonstrates leadership through continuous learning.
