India shine on opening day at Badminton Asia Team Championships

New Delhi: India’s men’s and women’s badminton teams began their campaigns at the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2026 with convincing wins on Wednesday in Qingdao, China. The men edged past Singapore 3-2, while the defending champion women’s team blanked Myanmar 5-0.

In the men’s matches, doubles pair Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty dominated Eng Koh and Junsuke Kubo 21-10, 21-8. Singles victories came from Ayush Shetty, who beat Jia Teh 21-17, 21-15, and Kidambi Srikanth, who defeated Jia Koh 21-15, 21-16. However, Lakshya Sen lost a close match 16-21, 21-19, 16-21 to Loh Kean Yeuu. Pruthvi Roy and Sai Prateek also fell in doubles against Nge Joo Jie and Donovan Wee.

The women’s team displayed complete dominance. Tanvi Sharma opened with a 21-13, 21-16 win over Thet Htar Thuzar, according to Badminton Asia.

Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj followed with a 21-12, 21-6 victory over Eaint Chit Phoo. Malvika Bansod sealed the tie with a 21-19, 21-12 win against Lin Lin Htet.

India continued their supremacy in doubles as well. Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra beat Su Latt and Thet Htar Thuzar 21-15, 21-16, while Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand cruised past Htet and Phoo 21-8, 21-6.

Both Indian teams now look forward to their next matches with confidence, aiming to maintain their unbeaten start.
