New Delhi: QatarEnergy has strengthened its position as a key global energy supplier by signing two major agreements with Malaysia and Japan on Tuesday.
The agreements were signed on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG 2026) on the sidelines of the 21st International Conference and Exhibition in Doha.
In a significant development for Southeast Asia’s energy security, QatarEnergy entered into a 20-year sales and purchase agreement with Malaysia’s state energy firm Petronas for the supply of LNG. Under the agreement, QatarEnergy will supply two million tonnes per annum of LNG to Malaysia, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028, according to a company statement.
Senior leadership from both organisations formalised the agreement during a ceremony in Doha. The deal marks the first long-term LNG supply agreement between QatarEnergy and Petronas and reflects the growing strategic energy partnership between Qatar and Malaysia. The agreement highlights confidence and aligns with both companies’ long-term focus on energy security, sustainability, and deeper bilateral cooperation.
QatarEnergy indicated that the agreement demonstrates its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s rising energy demand while continuing to serve customers across global markets.
In a separate development, QatarEnergy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and JERA, Japan’s largest power generation company. The MoU focuses on emergency LNG supply cooperation to support Japan during unforeseen disruptions.
The understanding outlines mechanisms through which QatarEnergy would provide additional LNG volumes to Japan in emergencies, including those caused by natural disasters or unexpected supply interruptions. It also establishes a framework for bilateral consultations to determine appropriate response measures during such events.
QatarEnergy noted that the MoU reinforces its role as a reliable partner in ensuring global energy security. The agreement also reflects Qatar’s ability to provide stable and flexible LNG supplies during periods of market stress, strengthening its reputation as a dependable energy supplier to major consuming nations.
