New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with his American counterpart, Donald J. Trump, over the phone on Wednesday, emphasizing that Taiwan remains the most important issue in China-US relations.

Xi reiterated that Taiwan is part of China and highlighted that Beijing will safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that the US must exercise caution in arms sales to the island.

Xi noted that the past year saw “sound communication” between the two countries, including a successful meeting in Busan, which helped chart the direction of bilateral ties and was welcomed internationally.

Looking ahead, the Chinese president expressed his hope to work with Trump to guide China-US relations steadily, navigating challenges and achieving tangible results. He acknowledged that both countries have concerns, stressing that China acts in accordance with its words and expects the two sides to work in the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.

Xi called for enhanced dialogue, proper management of differences, and expanded practical cooperation, according to Mao Ning, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. He said even small positive steps are valuable, while even minor missteps can have consequences. He concluded by expressing his vision for 2026 as a year where China and the U.S. make progress toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
