Cyclone Ditwah: Red alert declared in Tamil Nadu as storm heads for landfall

A red alert has been issued in parts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Ditwah moves slowly toward the state, bringing the likelihood of intense rain, strong winds and flooding in vulnerable coastal regions. Neighboring areas, including Puducherry, Kerala and Telangana, have also been advised to stay prepared for severe weather conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is currently positioned to the northeast of Sri Lanka over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is gathering more strength as it tracks in a north-northwest direction. The storm is projected to approach the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–south Andhra Pradesh coastline by the early hours of November 30.

Heavy rainfall bands are expected to sweep across parts of Tamil Nadu well before the system reaches land, increasing risks of waterlogging, disruption to daily activities and damage to infrastructure. Fisherfolk have been firmly instructed to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions and high waves.

Authorities across the region have deployed disaster response teams and kept emergency services on alert to deal with incidents such as tree fall, power outages or blocked roads. People in coastal and low-lying areas have been requested to follow official advisories closely and move to safer locations if necessary.

Officials say they are monitoring the cyclone’s movement around the clock and will issue further warnings as the system evolves, urging the public not to panic but to remain cautious.

Panaji: The Norwegian film “Safe House”, directed by Eirik Svensson, has received the prestigious ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI 2025). The honour recognises cinema that promotes peace, non-violence, and intercultural dialogue. The award was accepted by Manouj Kadaamh, Honorary Representative of ICFT–UNESCO Paris, and presented by NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum.

Set during the 2013 civil war in the Central African Republic, the film unfolds over 15 tense hours inside a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Bangui. Inspired by real events, Safe House portrays the courage, ethics, and responsibility of aid workers confronted with life-or-death decisions in a war zone. The ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal, instituted in collaboration with the International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) and UNESCO, honours films that uphold values of tolerance, cultural understanding, and peace.

The jury praised Safe House for its authentic depiction of moral courage and humanitarian values under pressure. They also noted its emotional depth, real-time narrative, and the powerful lead performance by Kristine Kujath Thorp. The film’s portrayal of ethical dilemmas faced by aid workers and its universal themes of compassion, responsibility, and the importance of human life contributed to its selection.

Director Eirik Svensson, known for films such as One Night in Oslo and Harajuku, continues to gain international recognition. Safe House premiered as the opening film at the 48th Göteborg Film Festival 2025, where it earned the Audience Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film.

India posts strong 8.2% GDP growth in Q2 FY 2025–26

New Delhi: India’s economic rise continues to gain momentum, reinforcing its position as a global growth leader. Currently the world’s fourth-largest economy, India is on track to become the third-largest by 2030, with GDP projected to reach USD 7.3 trillion. This growth trajectory reflects strong policymaking, structural reforms, and deeper global integration.

India has once again outperformed major economies, strengthened by resilient domestic demand, improving inflation trends, and increased labour force participation. A revival in domestic investment and positive investor sentiment indicate a stable and broad-based economic environment. With reforms advancing and the consumption outlook remaining positive, India’s growth momentum remains strong across sectors.

Recent GDP data highlights the pace of expansion. India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 8.2% in Q2 of FY 2025–26, compared to 5.6% in the same period last year. In Q1 of FY 2025–26, growth stood at 7.8%, up from 6.5% a year earlier. Nominal GDP rose by 8.7% in Q2. Sector-wise, the Primary sector recorded 3.1% real GVA growth. In comparison, the Secondary and Tertiary sectors posted strong growth of 8.1% and 9.2%, respectively, supporting the overall economic expansion, according to a PIB India release.

Inflation data from October 2025 show significant relief, highlighting strong economic fundamentals and effective price-stability measures. Headline inflation dropped to 0.25% year-on-year – its lowest in the current CPI series – and remains well within RBI’s tolerance band. The RBI maintained the repo rate at 5.50% with a neutral stance, signalling confidence in the economic outlook.

The decline in inflation was driven by easing food inflation, which registered –5.02%, supported by lower prices of oils, vegetables, fruits, eggs, cereals and related products, along with the recent reduction in GST rates. Rural inflation dropped to –0.25%, while urban inflation stood at 0.88%, reflecting broad-based improvement across regions. The moderated inflation environment is expected to support real consumption, investment, and long-term growth.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the latest GDP performance, highlighting the 8.2% growth recorded in the second quarter of FY 2025–26. He noted that the results reflect the impact of pro-growth policies, reforms, and the efforts of citizens. The PM reiterated the government’s commitment to accelerating reforms, strengthening Ease of Living, and ensuring that growth benefits reach all sections of society.

He said in a post on X: “The 8.2% GDP growth in Q2 of 2025-26 is very encouraging. It reflects the impact of our pro-growth policies and reforms. It also reflects the hard work and enterprise of our people. Our government will continue to advance reforms and strengthen Ease of Living for every citizen.”
