India-Bangladesh ties under strain after violence, protests and diplomatic exchanges

New Delhi: Relations between India and Bangladesh have entered a strained phase following a series of violent incidents inside Bangladesh and protests around diplomatic missions in both countries, prompting reciprocal diplomatic actions, visa disruptions and heightened security concerns over the past week.

The deterioration in ties follows unrest in Bangladesh after the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi and the lynching of a Hindu worker, Dipu Chandra Das, incidents that triggered protests, vandalism and international attention. These developments have spilled over into diplomatic spaces, with demonstrations reported outside missions in Dhaka, New Delhi, Kolkata and other cities, leading both governments to raise concerns about the safety of diplomatic staff and premises.

Tensions escalated after Hadi, a prominent figure associated with last year’s student-led pro-democracy movement in Bangladesh, was shot by unidentified gunmen on December 12 while leaving a mosque in Dhaka. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18 during treatment in Singapore. His death sparked renewed street protests in Bangladesh, during which media offices were reportedly vandalised and set on fire.

On the same night, Dipu Chandra Das was lynched along the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in the Jamirdia Dubaliapara area. Initial reports suggested the attack was linked to alleged religious provocation, but subsequent police statements and family accounts indicated the killing stemmed from a workplace dispute. The incident drew sharp reactions in India, particularly from groups expressing concern over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.

The situation further strained bilateral relations as protests unfolded near diplomatic missions. On December 17, Bangladeshi police stopped demonstrators attempting to march towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. In India, protests were held outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and other diplomatic establishments, including visa centres.

On December 21, the Ministry of External Affairs described the killing of Dipu Chandra Das as a “horrendous” incident and said India was closely monitoring developments in Bangladesh. The ministry also dismissed reports of a security breach at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi as misleading.

Visa services were affected amid the unrest. On December 20, protests near the Bangladesh mission in New Delhi led to police dispersals. Bangladesh subsequently suspended visa operations at its centres in Delhi, Siliguri and Tripura following demonstrations and vandalism reported on December 22. India, citing security concerns, shut its visa application centre in Chattogram earlier.

The diplomatic exchange intensified on December 23 when Bangladesh’s foreign ministry summoned the Indian envoy, citing incidents including protests outside its missions in New Delhi and Siliguri. Earlier, India had summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to convey concerns over the security environment in Dhaka and remarks by political figures perceived as threatening.

In Kolkata, clashes were reported on December 23 when protesters attempted to march to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission at Beckbagan. Police stopped the procession and made preventive arrests to secure the diplomatic premises, according to officials.

The current phase of tension comes against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s political transition following last year’s unrest and legal proceedings involving former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who remains in India. While both countries have reiterated commitments to diplomatic norms, recent events have underscored the fragility of ties amid internal unrest and cross-border sensitivities.

Colombo: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday held a detailed discussion on the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath in Colombo.

Jaishankar, who is in the Sri Lankan capital as the Special Envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, told Herath that the Indian government has committed a reconstruction package of USD 450 million to Sri Lanka.

In a press statement, he said: “India’s relief and assistance mission – Operation Sagar Bandhu – commenced on the very day that Cyclone Ditwah made landfall. Our Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant and another ship INS Udayagiri were present at Colombo and delivered relief material and thereafter also deployed helicopters. Two modular BHISHM emergency care units were also air lifted to Sri Lanka and utilized.”

In a post on X, the external affairs minister said: “Reiterated India’s full support to Sri Lanka’s recovery and rebuilding in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. Discussed the implementation of the reconstruction package offered and further relief measures.”

For his part, Herath expressed appreciation for India’s support to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the cyclone and reaffirmed the close partnership between the two countries.

India stay 142nd in latest FIFA men’s rankings

New Delhi: India has stayed put at 142nd place in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings released on Monday.

The ranking reflects a difficult phase for the national side, with India enduring a disappointing campaign in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers between March and November this year. The Blue Tigers failed to register a single victory across five matches, a run that had already seen them slide six places in the previous rankings issued on November 20.

India’s lowest-ever position in the FIFA rankings remains 173rd, recorded in March 2015.

At the top of the global standings, Spain retained the number one spot in the final men’s rankings of 2025. Morocco, despite winning the 2025 Arab Cup, continues to sit just outside the elite bracket at 11th, missing out on a top-10 return by a narrow margin of 0.54 points – a position they have not occupied since April 1998.

Among notable movers, Jordan climbed two places to reach 64th, making it one of the few teams to record a rise of more than one position in the latest update. Vietnam also moved up to 107th, while Singapore improved its standing to 148th.

Stronger digital safeguards help India avert ₹660 crore in telecom fraud losses

New Delhi: India has significantly strengthened its fight against telecom-enabled cyber fraud, with more than 1,000 banks, Telecom Payment Application Providers, and financial institutions now onboarded onto the Department of Telecommunications’ Digital Intelligence Platform. The coordinated effort has already delivered tangible results, helping avert cyber fraud losses worth ₹660 crore in just the past six months.

The Department of Telecommunications has rolled out a suite of citizen-focused digital services aimed at safeguarding mobile users and strengthening trust in digital communication channels. At the centre of this initiative is Sanchar Saathi, a platform designed to empower mobile subscribers, enhance security, and raise public awareness about government-led digital protection measures.

Through the Chakshu module, citizens can report suspicious calls and messages in real time, review all mobile connections issued in their name, block and track lost or stolen devices, and verify the authenticity of handsets before purchase. The platform also provides access to verified contact details of banks and financial institutions, reducing the risk of impersonation-based fraud.

To further curb financial losses, the DoT has operationalised the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator, a risk-based mechanism that categorises mobile numbers into Medium, High, or Very High fraud risk levels. The system draws intelligence from multiple sources, including the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, Chakshu user reports, banks, financial institutions, telecom service providers, and other stakeholders. This classification enables banks, non-banking financial companies, and UPI platforms to adopt enhanced safeguards and intervene before fraud escalates.

These initiatives are backed by the Digital Intelligence Platform, a secure information-sharing ecosystem that now connects over 1,050 organisations. Participants include central security agencies, state and UT police departments, telecom operators, banks, financial institutions, and major government bodies. Together, they are working to prevent the misuse of telecom resources and respond swiftly to emerging cyber threats.

With rising digital adoption across the country, the DoT’s integrated approach is emerging as a key pillar in India’s cyber security framework, combining technology, inter-agency collaboration, and citizen participation to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated fraud networks.

SAI GB clears major sports infrastructure upgrades across India

New Delhi: The Sports Authority of India’s Governing Body (GB), chaired by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, on Monday cleared a comprehensive slate of infrastructure creation and modernisation projects spanning multiple SAI centres across the country. The decisions were taken at a meeting held in New Delhi.

Addressing the GB, Dr. Mandaviya underlined the importance of strengthening the country’s sporting backbone at a crucial stage of its growth.

“The Indian sports ecosystem is now in its youth, and it is the need of the hour to strengthen it in every possible way so that it has a bright future. The decisions we are taking today are athlete-centric and aimed at ensuring that players have the best infrastructure that they need so that the medal counts that we have in mind for CWG and Olympics are met,” Dr. Mandaviya said in his address to the SAI GB.

Among the major proposals approved was the procurement of Poligras Paris GT Zero hockey turf for the SAI Netaji Subhas National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The facility serves as the primary training base for India’s men’s and women’s national hockey teams, as well as the respective ‘A’ squads.

The GB also cleared the replacement of existing electronic shooting targets with advanced laser-based target systems at the Karni Singh Shooting Range, which functions as the training venue for India’s top and emerging shooters, according to an official statement.

In a significant boost to athlete preparation and support infrastructure, the GB sanctioned the construction of three multipurpose indoor halls at SAI National Centres of Excellence in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (earlier SAI Aurangabad), SAI Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) Patiala, and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Trivandrum.

The proposed facility at SAI NCOE Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will include a weather-proof boxing training zone, a strength and conditioning area, and dedicated indoor spaces for volleyball and badminton. At SAI NSNIS Patiala, the new indoor hall is expected to significantly expand training capacity and provide a modern, integrated environment for sports performance, sports science support, conditioning, and recovery.

Further strengthening athletics infrastructure, the Governing Body approved the construction of a 400-metre, eight-lane synthetic athletics track at SAI Sports Training Centre Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. The committee observed that the Jalpaiguri centre has developed into an important athletics hub and has delivered strong results at regional and national competitions despite limited existing facilities.

In addition, approval was granted for the laying of a new synthetic athletics track at SAI Centre of Regional Centre (CRC) Bhopal. The centre hosts athletes from multiple disciplines and has a consistent record of producing international-level performers, including two Olympians.

The approved projects are aimed at expanding access to high-quality training environments and reinforcing an athlete-focused approach as India prepares for upcoming international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
