President Murmu calls for women-led growth at ‘Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi’ event

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu said a woman is truly empowered when she can make independent decisions, live with self-respect, and access equal opportunities and security, as she addressed the ‘Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi’ event organised by the Government of NCT Delhi in the national capital today.

Highlighting the growing role of women across sectors, the President said women are excelling in defence, science, sports, politics, administration, social service, and business. She noted that the rising number of girls receiving degrees and medals at convocations across the country is an encouraging sign of progress, according to a release by the President’s Secretariat.

At the same time, she pointed out that women continue to face challenges such as violence, economic inequality, social stereotypes, and neglect of health concerns. She said these obstacles must be removed to achieve the true goal of women’s empowerment. “An empowered woman can change not only her own life but also the direction of society and future generations,” she said.

President Murmu outlined several initiatives of the Government of India aimed at strengthening women’s social and economic position. She said the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana promotes girls’ education and safety, while the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana protects the health of women by freeing them from smoke-filled kitchens. The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, she noted, provides access to loans for self-employment, and initiatives such as Lakhpati Didi Yojana are helping women become self-reliant. She also referred to the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana as playing a vital role in improving women’s health.

However, the President stressed that women’s empowerment is not solely the responsibility of the government. She said every member of society and every institution has a role to play in educating women, building their self-confidence, and offering support and encouragement. Women must be assured that they can dream and fulfil those dreams, she added.

Referring to Delhi’s unique position as the national capital, President Murmu said the city represents people from across the country and therefore carries special responsibility. If women in Delhi are safe, educated, self-reliant, and able to lead confidently in all spheres, it would send a strong positive message nationwide.

She called for creating an enabling environment in which women can take independent decisions without fear or pressure. Such conditions, she said, are essential for women to contribute fully to the vision of a prosperous Delhi and a developed India.

India, Canada agree to elevate strategic ties, target $50 bn trade

New Delhi: India and Canada have agreed to renew and elevate their Strategic Partnership, adopting “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — One Earth, One Family, One Future — as the guiding framework for future cooperation.

Welcoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is on an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the visit as a “significant milestone” and said bilateral ties had gained “new energy, mutual trust and positivity.”

“When two democracies stand together, the voice of peace becomes even stronger,” he said, highlighting shared democratic values and a common commitment to global stability.

According to a Joint Statement issued after their talks, the leaders reviewed progress under the New Roadmap for Canada–India Relations and reaffirmed their commitment to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026, with the aim of expanding bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.

“Our priority is to unlock the full potential of economic cooperation,” Modi said during the joint press statement following the talks. He added that early finalisation of CEPA would create new investment and employment opportunities. He noted that Canadian pension funds have invested about USD 100 billion in India, calling it a sign of strong confidence in India’s growth story.

Energy cooperation emerged as a key pillar. The two sides advanced collaboration across hydrocarbons, renewables, civil nuclear energy, and critical minerals under the India–Canada Strategic Energy Partnership. They welcomed the relaunch of the Ministerial Energy Dialogue and a CAD 2.6 billion long-term uranium supply agreement between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy.

“We are building a next-generation energy partnership,” Modi said, pointing to joint work in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage. Canada’s decision to pursue membership in the International Solar Alliance and upgrade its role in the Global Biofuels Alliance was welcomed. An India–Canada Renewable Energy and Storage Summit will be held in 2026.

The leaders also signed an MoU on Critical Minerals Cooperation to strengthen resilient supply chains. In civil nuclear cooperation, they agreed to deepen long-term uranium supply and explore work on Small Modular Reactors and advanced reactor technologies.

Agriculture and food security were prioritised, with plans to establish a Canada–India Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence at NIFTEM Kundli to boost agri-technology and nutrition security.

Technology and innovation featured prominently. “India and Canada are natural partners in technology and innovation. Together, we will turn ideas into global solutions,” Modi said.

Accordign to the joint statement, the leaders agreed to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, supercomputing, semiconductors, and digital public infrastructure. Space collaboration between ISRO and the Canadian Space Agency will also be expanded.

Education and talent mobility were emphasised as the foundation of people-to-people ties. The leaders agreed to expand joint degree programs, research partnerships, and industry-linked training, and supported the establishment of Canadian university campuses in India. An MoU between AICTE and MITACS will enable around 300 Indian undergraduate students annually to undertake research placements in Canada.

Cultural cooperation was strengthened through a new MoU promoting exchanges in arts, heritage, and creative industries. Both sides also highlighted the importance of Indigenous and Tribal communities and inclusive development.

Defence and security cooperation will form a foundational layer of the renewed partnership. The leaders agreed to establish an India–Canada Defence Dialogue and expand collaboration in defence industries, maritime domain awareness, and military exchanges. They also committed to closer cooperation against terrorism and extremism.

“Terrorism and extremism are serious challenges not just for our countries but for humanity,” Modi said.

On the Indo-Pacific, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and resilient region. India welcomed Canada’s interest in becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association.

Addressing global tensions, Modi reiterated India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy, including in West Asia, and emphasised continued efforts to ensure the safety of Indian citizens abroad.

The leaders also welcomed the reconstitution of the India–Canada CEO Forum and the launch of a Finance Ministers’ Economic and Financial Dialogue focused on payments modernisation, fintech innovation, and cross-border remittances.

Both Prime Ministers expressed confidence that the renewed partnership would deliver tangible long-term benefits and contribute to regional stability and shared prosperity.

Iran war death toll rises to 555 as regional tensions escalate

New Delhi: At least 555 people have been killed across 131 cities in Iran following US-Israeli attacks, the Iranian Red Crescent Society has reportedly said adding that more than 100,000 rescuers are on full alert nationwide and a volunteer network of around four million people remains on standby to provide humanitarian and psychosocial support.

Meanwhile, Iran has claimed to have attacked the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a location where the commander of the Israeli Air Force was present, AzerNews reported, citing the Public Relations Department of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The report however clarified that the current status of Netanyahu was not clear.

Kuwait’s defence ministry reported that several American warplanes crashed in the country amid heightened regional hostilities. All crew members safely ejected and were taken to hospital for evaluation, with officials stating they are in stable condition. The US Central Command (Centcom) has later confirmed the incident and said three US F15 fightr jets “went down over Kuwait due to an apparent friendly fire incident”. All six aircrew ejected safely and are in stable condition, it said in a statement.

“During active combat-that included attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles, and drones – the U.S. Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses,” it said.

Saudi Arabia confirmed that some operational units at the Ras Tanura refinery were temporarily shut down following an incident involving intercepted drones in the vicinity. The energy ministry said falling debris caused minor damage and a precautionary suspension of certain units, but petroleum supplies to domestic markets remain unaffected.

Ras Tanura is one of the Middle East’s largest refining complexes, with a capacity of approximately 550,000 barrels per day. The development has added to concerns over regional energy security amid disruptions to shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.

In Cyprus, authorities have reportedly evacuated a passenger terminal at Paphos airport after radar systems detected a suspicious object. The airport lies about 60 kilometres from Britain’s RAF Akrotiri base, where sirens were activated following reported drone activity.

Meanwhile, Oman confirmed that a bomb-laden drone boat struck a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, killing one Indian crew member. The vessel was identified as the MKD VYOM.

In contrast, China called on all parties to cease military operations, urging a diplomatic resolution and describing the strikes as a violation of international law. Tehran maintains that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes, despite holding uranium enriched to 60 percent purity. Iranian officials have signalled willingness to reduce enrichment levels. Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency said the Natanz nuclear facility was struck during the recent attacks, though the UN nuclear watchdog stated it had not detected confirmed damage to Iran’s nuclear installations.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that attacks on nuclear power plants in the region could trigger radiological releases requiring mass evacuations from major urban centres. He urged restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement, noting that several Middle Eastern countries operate nuclear facilities or research reactors, raising concerns about broader nuclear safety risks.
