India edge England in run-fest to enter T20 World Cup final

Mumbai: India booked their place in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after defeating England by seven runs in a high-scoring semifinal thriller at the Wankhede Stadium here on Thursday. In a match packed with power-hitting and dramatic momentum swings, India held their nerve to defend a massive total and set up a title clash with New Zealand.

Batting first after England opted to bowl, India piled up a formidable 253 for 7 in 20 overs, powered by a blazing knock from Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed 89 off just 42 balls, striking eight fours and seven sixes, to anchor India’s innings. Ishan Kishan provided early momentum with a brisk 39 from 18 balls, while Shivam Dube added a valuable 43 as India maintained an aggressive scoring rate throughout the innings.

England faced a daunting target of 254 but responded with remarkable intent. Young batter Jacob Bethell produced a sensational counterattack, scoring a stunning century to keep England in the hunt. Bethell blasted 105 off 48 deliveries, launching an array of boundaries and sixes as he single-handedly carried the chase deep into the contest.

Despite Bethell’s heroics, India’s bowlers managed to apply pressure in the crucial stages. Jasprit Bumrah delivered key overs at the death, while disciplined bowling from the supporting attack prevented England from closing the gap in the final moments of the match.

England eventually finished on 246 for 7 in their 20 overs, falling just short in a contest that produced a remarkable 499 runs across 40 overs and delighted the Mumbai crowd with relentless big hitting.

With the victory, India advance to the tournament final where they will face New Zealand, who earlier defeated South Africa in the first semifinal. The win also continued India’s strong momentum in the tournament, with Samson emerging as one of the standout performers in the knockout stages.

Sanju Samson was declared the most valuable player for his brillant knock. India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s composure and credited Samson’s knock as the turning point of the contest. “Unbelievable feeling. Playing in India and leading this side is special. Samson knew exactly what the team required when he went in, and he delivered,” he said after the match.

He also highlighted the bowling unit’s performance under pressure. “They were always in the chase, but the way our bowlers pulled the game away was unbelievable. You know how capable Bumrah is in those moments,” Suryakumar said, adding that India’s improved fielding standards were also a key factor.

England captain Harry Brook admitted that fielding lapses proved costly, particularly a dropped chance that gave Samson a lifeline early in his innings. “I’ll hold my hands up and admit I made a big mistake dropping Samson. Against a team like India you can’t afford those errors,” Brook said.

Despite the defeat, Brook praised Bethell’s remarkable innings. “Bethell was absolutely unbelievable. To see him taking it on from ball one showed the world what he can do,” he said, adding that England could still take pride in their overall campaign.

Brief Scores: India 253/7 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 89, Shivam Dube 43; Will Jacks 2/40) beat England 246/7 in 20 overs (Jacob Bethell 105, Will Jacks 35; Hardik Pandya 2/38, Jasprit Bumrah 1/33) by 7 runs

The meeting assessed how departments have utilised approved budget allocations during the current financial year. Officials also examined the pace of spending under various government programmes, according to a government release.

The chief secretary directed all departments to utilise the approved budget allocations within the stipulated time before the end of the current month. She also asked departments to focus on preparations for the effective implementation of new schemes and programmes proposed in the 2026-27 budget.

Mandaviya reviews India’s preparations for 2026 Asian Games

New Delhi: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting at the headquarters of the Sports Authority of India to review India’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games.

The games will be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.

During the meeting, Mandaviya said the government would prioritise athlete welfare and performance. He stated that the government would provide every possible support, including training, sports science, logistics, kit support, food assistance, and medical care. He added that the aim was to allow athletes to focus on preparation and improve India’s medal tally at the Asian Games.

The minister also stressed the need for strong coordination among stakeholders. He said structured planning and timely preparation would help India achieve new milestones at the 2026 Asian Games.

As part of the preparation strategy, each National Sports Federation has designated a nodal officer for the Asian Games technical handbook, according to an official statement.

The officer will guide players, coaches, and support staff on discipline-wise technical requirements. Authorities will also finalise teams well in advance to allow athletes adequate time for focused training.

Officials are working to strengthen the capacity of support staff, including medical teams. Authorities will coordinate with Indian embassies abroad to manage logistics during the Games. Federations have received the freedom to plan exposure tours and competition schedules.

For disciplines that require complex planning, officials will organise support across multiple locations with dedicated staff at each venue. Authorities are also paying special attention to acclimatisation, including food and environmental conditions. Preparations are underway to simulate competition environments in India before the Games begin.

India aims to surpass the historic 106-medal haul achieved at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. Officials expect more than 700 Indian athletes to compete across over 40 sports disciplines in the 2026 edition.

During the meeting, officials highlighted that the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will follow a five-cluster competition model. Athletes will compete across multiple prefectures instead of staying in a single Olympic-village style accommodation. Venues will spread across clusters, including Aichi, Gifu, Shizuoka, and the Airport-Expo zone. The model requires detailed planning for travel, logistics, medical support, and athlete recovery.

A 15-member committee oversees the preparations for the 2026 Asian Games. The committee includes Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Hari Ranjan Rao, President of the Indian Olympic Association P. T. Usha, Asian Games Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav, and Deputy Chef de Mission Sharath Kamal. The panel has held four meetings since December 2025 to streamline planning related to training, logistics, athlete welfare, and competition readiness.

PM Modi calls for early end to Ukraine, West Asia conflicts

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for an early end to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, emphasising that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path to peace.

Speaking during a joint press statement with visiting President of Finland Alexander Stubb in New Delhi, Modi said military confrontation alone cannot resolve global disputes. “Whether in Ukraine or West Asia, we support all efforts aimed at ending conflicts quickly and restoring peace,” he said.

Highligthing that India and Finland share similar views on global stability and the need for diplomatic engagement, Modi said both the countries “believe in the rule of law, dialogue and diplomacy” and we agree that “military conflict alone cannot resolve any issue”. He further added that India and Finland “will continue to support all efforts for an early end to conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia and back every initiative aimed at restoring peace”.

The Prime Minister welcomed President Stubb on his first visit to India since assuming office and noted that his presence as the chief guest at the Raisina Dialogue was a matter of honour for India. Modi said the world is currently witnessing a period of instability and uncertainty, but deeper cooperation between India and Europe can contribute to global stability and shared prosperity.

On bilateral ties, Modi said India and Finland have decided to elevate their cooperation into a strategic partnership focused on digitalisation and sustainability. The partnership will expand collaboration in advanced sectors such as artificial intelligence, 6G telecommunications, clean energy and quantum computing.

He also pointed to existing cooperation between the two countries, noting that Nokia’s telecom networks have connected millions of Indians, Finnish architects contributed to the construction of the Chenab railway bridge, and Finland has partnered with India in establishing a bamboo-to-bioethanol refinery at Numaligarh.

In his press statement, the Prime Minister also said the two sides have also signed a comprehensive migration and mobility agreement to strengthen talent movement and innovation linkages. Finland, he noted, is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for Indian students and professionals.

Both countries will also deepen cooperation in education through teacher training programmes, school partnerships and joint research initiatives. Modi added that Finland remains an important partner for India in the Nordic region, with collaboration expanding into areas such as Arctic and polar research.

Iran condemns US strike on warship returning from India exercise

New Delhi: Iran has strongly condemned the sinking of its naval frigate IRIS Dena by a United States submarine in the Indian Ocean, calling the attack an “atrocity at sea” and warning that Washington would “bitterly regret” the action.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said the vessel had been returning from a naval engagement with the Indian Navy when it was struck without warning in international waters. According to Iranian officials, the frigate was carrying around 130 sailors.

The attack took place off the southern coast of Sri Lanka after the warship had participated in the multinational naval exercise MILAN in India. The exercise, held in Visakhapatnam from February 18 to 25, brought together naval forces from several countries and was aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and interoperability.

Iranian authorities said the vessel had been welcomed by the Indian Navy during the exercise and was on its return journey when it was targeted. Aragchi criticised the United States for carrying out the strike far from Iranian waters and accused Washington of setting a dangerous precedent.

The United States has acknowledged that an American submarine torpedoed the Iranian frigate, marking the first time since World War II that the US has sunk an enemy ship using a torpedo in combat. The incident is being viewed as a major escalation in the wider conflict that intensified after US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February.

Footage released by US authorities reportedly shows the moments before the strike, with the Iranian vessel sailing in calm waters before a large explosion erupts near its stern, sending debris and water into the air.

The broader conflict has already triggered retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran targeting countries hosting US military bases across the region, significantly raising tensions in the Middle East and surrounding maritime areas.

The incident has also drawn political reactions in India, where opposition leaders questioned the government’s silence over the strike. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticised the lack of an official response, noting that Iranian sailors had recently visited India as participants in the naval exercise.

Former Rajya Sabha member Jawhar Sircar also raised concerns about the attack occurring near waters where India and Sri Lanka frequently conduct joint patrols, questioning whether New Delhi should have responded more strongly.

The Indian government has not issued a detailed statement on the incident so far, although it has rejected claims that US forces used Indian ports to launch operations against Iran.

The sinking of the Iranian frigate has added a new dimension to the rapidly expanding regional crisis, raising concerns about maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the potential implications for regional stability.

His commitment to inclusive politics and cordial relations with opponents set a timeless example for everyone. Let’s honor his legacy as his thoughts and deeds continue to inspire us! Humble tributes to him,” he said.

Popularly known as Biju Babu, Biju Patnaik was born on March 5, 1916, in Cuttack. A towering personality in Indian politics, he was also a skilled pilot and a noted industrialist who made significant contributions to the development of modern Odisha through initiatives in industry, education, and infrastructure.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announces Rajya Sabha bid, thanks voters

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has confirmed that he will contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, signalling a major shift in the state’s political landscape just months after beginning his tenth term as chief minister.

In a message addressed to the people of Bihar, Kumar thanked voters for their continued trust and support over the past two decades, saying their confidence had enabled him to serve the state with dedication.

“For more than two decades, you have consistently placed your trust and support in me, and on the strength of that trust we have worked to serve Bihar and its people with full commitment,” Kumar said in a post written in Hindi on social media platform X.

The veteran leader also reflected on his long political career and said he had always hoped to serve in every legislative forum available to him.

“From the beginning of my parliamentary journey, I had a desire to be a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as both Houses of Parliament. In line with that aspiration, I am now seeking to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the election taking place this time,” he wrote.

Kumar sought to reassure supporters that his decision to seek a seat in the Upper House of Parliament would not weaken his connection with the people of Bihar. He said his commitment to the development of the state would remain unchanged.

“My bond with you will remain the same in the future as well, and my resolve to work with you for a developed Bihar will continue with full strength,” he said, adding that the new government in the state would have his guidance and cooperation.

Kumar, the leader of the Janata Dal (United), has been one of the most prominent figures in Bihar politics for over two decades. If elected to the Rajya Sabha, he will add another milestone to his political career, having already served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Bihar Legislative Council and the Lok Sabha.

His entry into the Rajya Sabha would place him among a small group of leaders who have served in both Houses of a state legislature as well as both Houses of the Indian Parliament.

The development has also triggered speculation about leadership changes in Bihar, as Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha could eventually lead to the selection of a new chief minister in the state.

According to sources within the Janata Dal (United), Kumar is likely to continue in office as chief minister at least until the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for March 16.

Temple flowers turned into eco-friendly Gulal for Holi in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In a unique initiative to promote sustainable celebrations, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) introduced eco-friendly gulal made from recycled temple flowers for this year’s Holi, which was celebrated yesterday across the country. The initiative aimed to encourage the use of natural colours while reducing floral waste generated in the city’s temples.

For several months leading up to the festival, BMC collected large quantities of discarded flowers from temples across Bhubaneswar. Instead of allowing the offerings to be thrown into drains or dumped in waste yards, the civic body processed them into aromatic, chemical-free gulal. The flowers were dried, powdered and converted into natural colours suitable for Holi celebrations.

Officials said floral waste from nearly 700 temples had been gathered over the past six months as part of the initiative. Through this process, the municipal corporation produced around three quintals of organic gulal, demonstrating how religious waste can be reused in an environmentally responsible manner.

Synthetic Holi colours often contain chemicals that can cause skin irritation and environmental harm. By introducing gulal made from temple flowers, BMC aimed to provide residents with a safer and more sustainable alternative.

The initiative is part of the corporation’s broader effort to promote a circular waste management system, where organic waste is recycled instead of being discarded. Temple flowers form a significant portion of biodegradable waste in urban areas, and their improper disposal can lead to clogged drains and pollution.

Civic officials said the initiative successfully highlighted how cultural traditions and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, offering a model for greener festival celebrations in the future.
