The festival, held from March 27 to 31, was jointly organised by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Purbanchal Cultural Centre, Kolkata, under the patronage of the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture.

A stirring performance of the Odia marked the closing night play “Adrishya Nata”, presented by Rangashala Natya Anushthana of Puri. Written by noted playwright Harihar Mishra and helmed by director Bikram Kumar Sahu, the production drew sustained applause from a packed house.

The play traces the life and spiritual journey of poet Dinakrushna Das, exploring his deep devotion and reverence for Mahaprabhu Jagannath. Set against the literary, social, and political landscape of the Riti era – a significant period in classical Odia literature – the narrative offered audiences both an emotional and an intellectually enriching experience.

The ensemble cast, featuring Rupakala Mishra, Deb Prasad Das, Udayabhanu Mahapatra, Kedar Mishra, Rakesh Sahu, Narayan Raut, Sangram Keshari Das, Gauriranajan Barik, Shantanu Samantaray, and Mohit Animesh Das, delivered performances widely praised by the audience.

Fide Candidates 2026: Praggnanandhaa loses; Divya and Vaishali draw

New Delhi: Indian chess players showed grit and resilience in Round 3 of the FIDE Candidates Tournament on Tuesday, with R Praggnanandhaa falling to Javokhir Sindarov, while Divya Deshmukh and R Vaishali produced strong draws to keep India in the spotlight.

Praggnanandhaa’s clash against Uzbek chess grandmaster Sindarov was a high-stakes tactical battle. The Indian Grandmaster faced early complications as Sindarov sacrificed a piece for two pawns and long-term initiative. Praggnanandhaa defended well, but as time pressure mounted, Sindarov capitalized to claim the full point. The game highlighted the challenges Indian players face at the highest level but also showcased Praggnanandhaa’s fighting spirit in a chaotic position, fide.com reported.

Deshmukh impressed with a remarkable escape against Russian Aleksandra Goryachkina. Under relentless pressure for over 50 moves, Divya navigated a complex rook endgame that could have gone either way. Despite being in a difficult position, she held her nerve and secured a draw, demonstrating composure and technical skill.

R Vaishali also stood out for her precision and discipline. Against Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk, she played an error-free game, maintaining a solid position from start to finish and earning a well-deserved draw. Her performance reflected strong technical understanding and patience in high-pressure situations.

While Indian players battled for every half-point, global stars also made headlines. American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana delivered a crushing victory over Wei Yi, using a tactical miniature to surge into the tournament lead. Caruana accepted Wei Yi’s ambitious pawn sacrifices and capitalized on the complications to secure a commanding win. Javokhir Sindarov joined him at the top after defeating Praggnanandhaa, proving why the tournament remains fiercely competitive.

Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers: India beat Hong Kong

New Delhi: India signed off their AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Qualifiers Final Round Group C campaign with a 2-1 victory over Hong Kong, China on Tuesday.

Playing at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi, the hosts secured their only win of the group stage to finish with five points. Despite the result, India fell short of qualification, with Singapore emerging as the group toppers and Hong Kong, China ending three points ahead of India in second place, the-afc.com reported.

India made a dream start in front of the home fans. In just the fourth minute, debutant Ryan Williams found the net after latching onto a precise through ball from Manvir Singh and calmly finishing past goalkeeper Pong Cheuk Hei.

The home side maintained control for much of the first half. Lallianzuala Chhangte came close in the 17th minute, only to be denied by a timely block from Sun Ming Him, while Lalengmawia Apuia’s effort from distance drifted wide minutes later.

Hong Kong, China had a chance to level before the break, but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu comfortably dealt with Wong Wai’s header, ensuring India carried a narrow lead into halftime.

The advantage was extended early in the second half. Akash Mishra doubled the lead in the 51st minute with a sharp finish from a tight angle that flew into the roof of the net.

Hong Kong, China, responded midway through the half. Everton Camargo capitalised on a defensive lapse, slipping past Rahul Bheke and guiding the ball beyond Gurpreet to reduce the deficit in the 65th minute.

India had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, with substitute Ashique Kuruniyan missing key chances. At the other end, Gurpreet produced crucial saves to deny Jason Kam and Ng Yu Hei as Hong Kong, China pushed for an equaliser.

However, India held firm in the closing stages to secure a hard-fought win, ending their campaign on a positive note despite missing out on progression from Group C.
