Iran rejects ceasefire claim as US signals prolonged conflict

Tehran denies negotiations while Washington hints at continued military action, with Hormuz disruption and rising oil prices deepening global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has entered a more uncertain phase, with conflicting claims over ceasefire efforts and continued military escalation raising global concerns.

A senior Iranian official has rejected US President Donald Trump’s assertion that Iran’s leadership had sought a ceasefire. According to Al Jazeera, reporting from Tehran, officials denied any such request, contradicting Trump’s statement on his Truth Social platform that Iran’s “new regime president” had approached Washington for a truce.

Trump, however, maintained a hardline stance, warning that US military action would continue until the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. He said the United States would keep “blasting Iran into oblivion” if the key maritime route, through which a significant share of global oil and gas supplies pass, remains blocked.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has intensified concerns over global energy markets, with rising oil prices adding economic pressure worldwide.

Meanwhile, Iran has firmly denied the existence of any negotiations with the United States. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there were “no grounds for negotiations” and dismissed reports of a proposed settlement plan from Washington.

Araghchi acknowledged that some messages had been exchanged with US special envoy Steve Witkoff but clarified that such communication does not constitute formal talks. He also cited past experiences, including the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, as a reason for Tehran’s reluctance to engage.

Separately, Trump signalled the possibility of a limited and phased military approach, stating that the US could carry out targeted “spot hits” and withdraw quickly. He also suggested that his upcoming address would outline the next steps in the conflict, while expressing dissatisfaction with NATO allies over their level of support.

In an interview with The Telegraph newspaper, Trump described the military alliance as a “paper tiger” and said he would reconsider the US’ membership in the bloc. “I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way,” he said.

As the war enters its fifth week, uncertainty continues to dominate both the military and diplomatic fronts. With neither side indicating readiness for formal negotiations and global economic pressures mounting, the prospects for de-escalation remain unclear.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed that the UK will host a virtual meeting of around 35 countries on Thursday (April 2) to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The talks, according to media reports, will focus on restoring safe navigation, protecting vessels and seafarers, and resuming the flow of essential commodities, with countries including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands expected to participate.

Separately, Japan and France have agreed to step up coordination to push for an end to the conflict and reopen the Strait. On the ground, Israeli emergency services reported at least 14 people injured near Tel Aviv in missile attacks attributed to Iran, with additional casualties reported in northern Israel following fire from Lebanon.

Odisha Day 2026 celebrated at birthplace of Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das in Satyabadi

Bhubaneswar: Odisha marked its 91st year as a separate province on Wednesday with the state-level Odisha Day celebration held at Suando village in Satyabadi, Puri district – the birthplace of Utkalamani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, one of state’s most revered freedom fighters and social reformers.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presided over the occasion, explaining that the state government has made it a practice to hold the annual celebration at the birthplaces of Odisha’s great sons, so that the people and youth of the state remain connected to their memory and are inspired by their sacrifice and dedication.

Last year, the event was held at the birthplace of Utkala Gaurava Madhusudan Das.

Before the main programme, the chief minister visited Gopabandhu Das’s birth room, known as the Shathighara, and paid his respects to Utkalamani’s family deity, Lord Radha Binodbihary. He garlanded the statue of Utkalamani at Gopabandhu Park and toured the Gopabandhu Museum before attending the public meeting at Utkalamani Gopabandhu Memorial College, Sakhigopal.

Addressing a large gathering, Majhi invoked Gopabandhu’s life as an enduring lesson for the nation. “A person born in an ordinary place, using ordinary means, can become godlike through the strength of his deeds,” he said in a lengthy post on X, calling Pandit Gopabandhu an example not just for Odisha but for the entire country.

He added that Gopabandhu’s suffering, hardships, and sacrifices have fundamentally transformed the destiny of the Odia people.

The CM reaffirmed commitments made during the Satyabadi Mahotsava, announcing that a comprehensive Rs 585 crore development plan for the Satyabadi Forest School and surrounding area will be implemented shortly. Of this, Rs 495 crore will be directed towards the redevelopment of the Satyabadi area, including the construction of a Heritage Corridor.

The remaining Rs 90 crore will go towards the revival of the historic Bakulabana, which will be transformed into a cultural, spiritual, and educational centre while preserving its historical identity.

The CM also outlined an ambitious vision for Puri and the surrounding district. A world-class Shri Jagannath Museum and Library will be established in Puri at Rs 1,000 crore. Historic and spiritual sites, including the Gundicha Temple, Emar Math, and Raghunandan Library, will also be restored to their former glory.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey tenders apology for comments on late Odisha CM Biju Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday issued a public apology following his controversial remarks on former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik.

In a post on X, Dubey said that his comments were misconstrued.

A few days ago, Dubey had said that there was a link between Biju Patnaik, the US government, the Central Intelligence Agency, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

His statement drew sharp criticism from the main opposition party, the BJD, which demanded an unconditional apology from Dubey.

BJD MPs also staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha in protest. BJD supremo and Biju Patnaik’s son, Naveen Patnaik, also condemned Dubey’s remarks, calling the allegations outrageous.

The Odisha government on Tuesday also criticised Dubey’s statement, terming it “unacceptable.” Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said that the remarks reflected Dubey’s personal views and did not represent the official position of the state government.

He added that the comments had caused anguish, including to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Following Dubey’s statement, Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra resigned from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT headed by Dubey.

“While speaking to the media last week, my remarks – made in the context of the actions of the Nehru-Gandhi family – were misinterpreted in relation to former Chief Minister and one of India’s leading leaders, the respected Shri Biju Patnaik. First of all, that statement was my personal opinion. My views about Nehru ji were mistakenly understood as being about Biju Babu. Biju Babu has always been, and will continue to be, a statesman of great stature for us. If my statement has hurt sentiments, I offer my unconditional apology,” Dubey clarified.

Government caps Jet fuel hike to protect flyers

New Delhi: The Centre has stepped in to moderate a sharp surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, aiming to shield domestic airlines and passengers from steep fare increases triggered by global energy disruptions.

State-run oil marketing companies initially raised ATF prices in Delhi to around Rs 2.07 lakh per kilolitre for April, reflecting mounting pressure from international markets. However, within hours, the price was revised downward to about Rs 1.04 lakh per kilolitre after government intervention to limit the impact on the domestic aviation sector.

Under the revised approach, domestic carriers will face only a partial and staggered increase in fuel costs—estimated at around 25 per cent—while airlines operating international routes will continue to bear the full market-linked price rise.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said the calibrated pricing strategy is designed to maintain sectoral stability while protecting passengers from sudden fare spikes. He noted that the move would also help sustain cargo operations and preserve critical air connectivity for trade and logistics.

The decision comes amid heightened volatility in global energy markets due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Disruptions, including constraints on tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz—a key global energy corridor—have significantly pushed up fuel prices worldwide.

A full pass-through of the price surge would have placed considerable financial strain on Indian airlines, many of which already operate on thin margins. Similar pressures are being felt globally, with several carriers adjusting operations as fuel costs rise.

Meanwhile, the broader impact of rising energy prices is also being felt domestically. Oil companies have increased the price of commercial LPG cylinders, with 19-kg cylinders seeing hikes of up to Rs 218 across major cities. In Delhi, the revised price now stands above Rs 2,000, while other metros have recorded comparable increases.

The government’s intervention on ATF pricing is being seen as a balancing measure to cushion the aviation sector while navigating ongoing global uncertainties in energy supply.

Odisha celebrates 90th Utkal Divas with great enthusiasm

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is observing the 90th Utkal Divas celebrations with great enthusiasm across the state.

On this day in 1936, Odisha was separated from Bihar under British rule, following the Utkal Sammilani movement led by great social reformer Madhusudan Das. The creation of the state established Odia as the official language and helped preserve its Kalinga heritage, Jagannath devotion, and Odissi dance traditions.

Major buildings in Bhubaneswar were illuminated in green, blue, and purple. Social media posts highlighted the state anthem Bande Utkala Janani, tributes to freedom fighters, and previews of the month-long Odia Paksha 2026 cultural festivities, blending ancient pride with modern progress.

A host of national and regional leaders extended greetings to Odisha and its people on the occasion.

President Droupadi Murmu said that Odisha’s invaluable contribution to India’s freedom struggle and nation-building continues to inspire everyone.

“I pray to Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannath for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Odisha,” she said in a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes, saying, “The people of Odisha, known for their determination, simplicity, and warmth, have made remarkable contributions across fields.”

In a post on X, he said, “May Odisha keep scaling new heights of progress in the times to come.”

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan wished the State, saying, “May the State march ahead on the path of peace, prosperity, and progress, and contribute significantly to the vision of Viksit Bharat.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised Odisha’s rich culture and heritage. “Greetings to the sisters and brothers of Odisha on Odisha Day. Blessed with a rich cultural heritage and divine blessings of Prabhu Jagannath, Odisha shines as India’s pride. May the state touch new heights of progress and prosperity in the journey towards a Viksit Bharat,” he said in a post on X.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in his special message to the State, extended his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Odia brothers and sisters living in India and abroad.

“As the first province formed based on language, Odisha had carved out its own distinct identity on the world stage. On this occasion, I pay my deepest tribute to those great sons of the soil, whose sacrifice and foresight made a separate Odisha possible,” he said in a special video message posted on his X account.
