Gukesh beats Sindarov, draws with Wesley So at Grand Chess Tour

New Delhi: World Chess Champion D. Gukesh demonstrated that his preparations for the upcoming World Championship defence are well on course, securing a victory over his future title challenger Javokhir Sindarov in the fifth round before sharing the spoils with American Grandmaster Wesley So at the Super Rapid and Blitz event on the Grand Chess Tour.

The win over Sindarov, representing Uzbekistan, fetched Gukesh two points, while the subsequent draw against So added one more, taking his tally to six points with three rapid rounds remaining. The Indian champion now shares sixth position with Fabiano Caruana, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and will be looking to close the gap on the leaders in the rounds ahead, according to chess.com.

At the top of the standings, Wesley So and fellow American Hans Niemann are tied on nine points, with Vladimir Fedoseev a point adrift in third place.

The encounter between Gukesh and Sindarov carried added significance as it served as a preview of their scheduled World Championship meeting in December. Both players arrived at the fifth round on the back of defeats – Gukesh had lost to Radosław Wojtaszek, while Sindarov had been beaten by Wesley So.

The Indian champion wrapped up the win in 52 moves, claiming the first competitive victory over his future challenger. Although Sindarov had previously played down the importance of the pre-championship clash, his performance at the board indicated he felt the weight of facing the reigning world champion.

The Grand Chess Tour, an event founded by legendary former world champion Garry Kasparov, also features R. Praggnanandhaa as one of India’s leading hopes, following Gukesh’s withdrawal from the broader tour.

Indian firms pledge record USD 20.5bn in US investments at SelectUSA Summit

New Delhi: Indian companies have committed a record USD20.5 billion in investments into the US, announced at the 2026 SelectUSA Investment Summit held in Maryland, marking a landmark moment in bilateral economic ties between the two nations.

The investments span several strategic sectors, including pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, energy infrastructure, and emerging technologies, the US Embassy in New Delhi said in a press release.

Officials said the commitments are expected to generate thousands of jobs across both countries while boosting American production capacity and fostering joint innovation. The bulk of the pledged capital comes from India’s pharmaceutical industry, which accounts for over USD 19.1 billion earmarked for US manufacturing facilities, research and development operations, and new infrastructure.

The remaining investments are directed at strengthening American industrial capacity in steel, connectivity, and energy supply chains, to build more secure and resilient production networks.

Separately, 12 Indian companies announced greenfield and expansion projects worth more than USD 1.1 billion across multiple US states, targeting job creation in manufacturing, technology, and engineering. Officials noted that these announcements surpass the combined total of all previous Indian investment announcements at prior SelectUSA summits and represent the highest number of commitments by any single country at this year’s edition.

US Ambassador Sergio Gor, speaking at the SelectUSA kick-off reception in New Delhi, said the investments advanced the shared ambition of doubling US-India bilateral trade to USD500 billion by 2030. He said that through fair and mutually beneficial trade, the US was attracting world-class investment and creating shared prosperity for both nations.

The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the US government’s flagship event for facilitating foreign business investment, bringing together investors, companies, economic development organisations, and industry experts to identify opportunities and forge commercial partnerships.

West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s PA shot dead, TMC calls for CBI probe

New Delhi: The Personal Assistant (PA) of West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot and killed in Madhyamgram, just two days after the party secured a landmark victory in the state assembly elections.

The victim, identified as Chandranath Rath, was struck by three of four bullets fired at him while travelling in a moving vehicle. According to reports, the attackers trailed his car and opened fire once it reduced speed.

The vehicle’s left front window was visibly damaged by bullet impacts. Rath had served under Adhikari for several years, managing the BJP leader’s political coordination and related responsibilities, and was regarded as a trusted member of his close circle.

Adhikari rushed to the hospital in Madhyamgram, where his PA’s body had been kept by police. Rath’s driver, identified as Buddhadeb, sustained injuries in the attack and was also hospitalised. The incident took place within an assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, on the outskirts of Kolkata. Adhikari himself was not present at the scene during the attack.

Speaking outside the hospital, Adhikari described the killing as a premeditated murder carried out in cold blood, alleging that the assailants had conducted prior surveillance of the target before executing the attack. He said the incident had left him deeply distressed, and that the BJP condemned it in the strongest terms.

He added that Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar had already reached out to Rath’s family. Adhikari further alleged that the killing was a consequence of what he termed prolonged misrule in the state, and warned that the BJP would take steps to rid the region of criminal elements following its electoral success.

The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, condemned the murder, simultaneously alleging that individuals affiliated with or posing as BJP supporters had been engaged in post-poll violence over the preceding three days.

“We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram tonight, along with the killing of three other TMC workers in incidents of post-poll violence allegedly carried out by BJP-backed miscreants over the last three days, despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force,” the party said in a statement, and called for a court-monitored CBI investigation.

“We demand the strongest possible action in this matter, including a court-monitored CBI investigation so that those responsible are identified and brought to justice without delay. Violence and political killings have no place in a democracy and the guilty must be held accountable at the earliest,” the statement added.

The BJP, for its part, separately alleged that TMC workers disguised as BJP members were attempting to provoke further unrest. Scattered incidents of groups vandalising public property were also reported on social media videos circulating on the same day.

India launches website, logo for first International Big Cat Alliance Summit 2026

New Delhi: Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has launched the official website and logo of the 1st International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

The launch event was attended by Heads of Mission from big cat range countries, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of External Affairs, and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). A promotional film for the summit was also unveiled during the event.

The International Big Cat Alliance is an intergovernmental platform established for the conservation of seven big cat species – lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma, according to an official statement.

Addressing the gathering, Yadav said the occasion marks a significant step towards a global summit dedicated to the conservation of iconic big cats. He announced that India will host the first IBCA Summit on June 1, 2026, in New Delhi, with participation expected from Heads of State and Government of member and observer countries.

The summit will be held under the theme “Save Big Cats, Save Humanity, Save Ecosystem” and is expected to bring together more than 400 participants, including conservation experts, policymakers, scientists, representatives of multilateral agencies, financial institutions, corporate leaders, and community stakeholders.

Highlighting India’s conservation efforts, the minister said the country’s journey has been defined by scientific management, institutional coordination, innovation, and community participation. He referred to initiatives such as Project Tiger and conservation programmes for lion, leopard, snow leopard, and cheetah, stating that India has demonstrated that conservation and development can move together.

Yadav said the establishment of the IBCA in 2023 reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a global platform for collective conservation action through cooperation, knowledge sharing, and joint responsibility among range countries.

He added that the upcoming summit will be a defining moment in global conservation diplomacy, strengthening international partnerships and aligning conservation efforts with global biodiversity and climate goals.

A key outcome of the summit will be the adoption of the first global declaration on big cat conservation, titled the “Delhi Declaration,” which will outline shared priorities, strengthen transboundary cooperation, and promote a landscape-based conservation approach for protecting big cats and their habitats.
