Puri Municipal Corporation ramps up civic services for Rath Yatra 2026

Bhubaneswar: The Puri Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched one of its biggest-ever civic operations to ensure uninterrupted sanitation, drainage and public amenities for millions of devotees attending the Rath Yatra 2026.

Working in coordination with the district administration, Odisha Police, Fire Services and other departments, the civic body has deployed large-scale manpower, machinery and infrastructure across the holy city to maintain cleanliness and provide essential services during the annual festival.

Sanitation has remained the top priority, with overnight cleaning drives conducted along Bada Danda and the Gundicha Temple premises ahead of key rituals.

Dedicated sanitation teams and waste collection vehicles have also been stationed across major congregation points, including the Grand Road, temple surroundings, Beach Road and areas around the chariots, to ensure the timely removal of waste generated during food distribution and pilgrim activities.

PMC has deployed 1,451 sanitation workers, supported by 570 waste collection vehicles, 15 cesspool vehicles, and three mechanical road-sweeping machines to maintain continuous cleaning operations and scientific waste disposal throughout the festival.

To tackle waterlogging caused by monsoon rains, the civic body has operationalised 23 designated parking areas with dedicated maintenance teams and emergency construction materials.

A total of 38 dewatering pumps have been installed across vulnerable locations, supplemented by 50 additional pumps from the Fire Services Department and 10 high-capacity pump sets capable of removing nearly 3,000 litres of water per minute.

For the convenience of pilgrims, around 1,600 temporary toilets have been installed across parking zones, police accommodation camps and other high-footfall locations. These include FRP toilets, mobile toilet vans, urinal points, and facilities accessible to persons with disabilities.

The sanitation infrastructure is being monitored through geo-tagging, while dedicated cleaning staff remain on duty round the clock.

Nearly 3,000 temporary lights have also been installed across key locations to facilitate the safe movement of devotees, with maintenance teams deployed to respond quickly to technical issues.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said providing world-class civic services to devotees of Lord Jagannath remains the state government’s top priority.

He said coordinated efforts by various departments have ensured effective sanitation, waterlogging management, and uninterrupted public services despite heavy monsoon showers.

Meanwhile, anti-encroachment drives have been intensified to keep roads and pedestrian routes free from obstruction during the festival. As part of pre-event preparations, the authorities covered all identified drains deeper than three feet with concrete slabs, desilted more than 300 major drains, and completed extensive pothole repairs to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees and vehicles.

Additional Chief Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Usha Padhee, said civic service delivery during this year’s Rath Yatra has been made more systematic, technology-driven, and accountable through continuous field monitoring, geo-tagging of sanitation infrastructure and round-the-clock deployment of sanitation personnel and officials.

The PMC said the extensive planning, resource mobilisation and inter-departmental coordination have helped maintain cleanliness, safety and efficient civic management during one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

The civic body also acknowledged the efforts of sanitation workers, engineers, frontline staff and partner agencies for ensuring a hygienic and well-managed environment for pilgrims throughout the festival.

Governor Dr. Kambhampati stresses skill development, jobs for hearing-impaired girls

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on Saturday underscored the importance of skill development and employment opportunities for hearing-impaired girls, urging efforts to connect them with the state’s growing industrial sector.

The governor made the remarks while interacting with nearly 50 members of Kendujhar-based SEVA Foundation, including hearing-impaired girls and persons with physical disabilities, at the Abhishek Hall in Lok Bhavan.

During the interaction, representatives of the foundation informed the governor that the girls are receiving vocational training in tailoring and handicrafts to help them become self-reliant.

Noting that several textile industries are expected to come up in Odisha, Dr. Kambhampati advised the organisation to explore employment opportunities for the trained girls in these upcoming industrial units.

He said gainful employment would enable them to achieve financial independence and live with dignity.

The governor also reviewed the support being provided to the participants, including hearing aids and artificial limbs. Taking note of their requirements, he directed the administration to facilitate the provision of hearing aids through Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Following the interaction, the hearing-impaired girls and persons with physical disabilities visited the Lok Bhavan premises, including Atal Van and Deer Park. Arrangements have also been made for the group to visit Puri on Sunday.

The interaction reflected the state’s focus on promoting inclusive development by enhancing skill training, improving accessibility, and creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Skyroot Aerospace launches India’s first private orbital rocket

New Delhi: India achieved a major milestone in its space journey on Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, making it the country’s first privately developed rocket to place payloads into orbit.

The four-stage Vikram-1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and completed its Test Flight-1 mission by injecting its payloads into an orbit of around 450 kilometres. With the successful mission, India became the third country in the world to demonstrate private orbital launch capability, Skyroot said in a series of posts on X.

Founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace has emerged as one of India’s leading private space companies. The successful launch marks a significant achievement for the country’s growing commercial space sector.

Designed to provide rapid and on-demand launch services, the 24-metre-tall Vikram-1 is capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into a 450-kilometre orbit. The maiden mission carried multiple payloads, including technology demonstration experiments, the Diamond Lotus artwork, and a special ‘Vande Mataram’ postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ahead of the launch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the mission as “a historic new frontier for India’s space journey” and said it reflected the talent, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of India’s youth. In a post on X, he noted that reforms in the space sector had opened new opportunities for innovation and enterprise, encouraging citizens to support the landmark mission.

Following the successful launch, the PM congratulated the Skyroot Aerospace team, calling the achievement a defining moment in India’s space programme. He said the increasing participation of the private sector was opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation while inspiring young Indians to dream bigger and innovate fearlessly.

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan also congratulated Skyroot Aerospace, describing the mission as a landmark achievement that marks a new chapter in India’s space journey.

In a post on X, he said the successful launch showcased the strength of India’s private space sector, advanced indigenous innovation, and reinforced the country’s emergence as a global space power.

The success of Vikram-1 reflects the rapid transformation of India’s space ecosystem since the government’s space sector reforms were introduced in 2020. Those reforms have helped expand the number of Indian space startups from just one to more than 400, fostering closer collaboration between private companies and the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The successful orbital mission is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global commercial launch market and pave the way for greater private participation in future space missions, satellite launches and advanced space technologies.

Reliance Industries reports higher Q1 profit

New Delhi: Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) has reported higher revenue and profit for the first quarter of FY2026-27, driven by steady growth in its digital services, retail and Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) businesses.

The company posted stronger earnings despite continued volatility in global energy markets.

Consolidated revenue for the April-June quarter rose 6.6% year-on-year to Rs 2,81,090 crore. EBITDA increased 18.2% to Rs 58,024 crore, while profit after tax stood at Rs 22,611 crore.

Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said the company’s consumer businesses continued to perform well during the quarter. He said Jio strengthened its market leadership through sustained subscriber growth and higher customer engagement, while Reliance Retail recorded broad-based growth across major consumption categories.

He added that the company also continued to advance its long-term investments in new energy and advanced manufacturing.

The O2C business accounted for the largest share of Reliance’s revenue during the quarter. Revenue from the segment rose 30.4% year-on-year to Rs 2,01,803 crore, mainly due to higher crude oil prices. Segment EBITDA increased 17.2% to Rs 17,010 crore, supported by improved transportation fuel margins and better downstream performance.

However, higher feedstock costs, elevated freight expenses, and scheduled maintenance at manufacturing facilities affected overall margins.

Jio Platforms maintained its growth momentum by adding 8.9 million net subscribers during the quarter, taking its total subscriber base to 533.3 million. Average Revenue Per User improved to Rs 215.6 as customer engagement and data consumption continued to increase.

Reliance Retail reported revenue of Rs 90,408 crore, up 7.4% from a year ago. The business registered growth across grocery, fashion, consumer electronics, and digital commerce. Excluding the impact of the RCPL business restructuring, gross revenue increased 11.6% year-on-year.

The company’s exploration and production business recorded higher output from the KG-D6 fields, while the media and entertainment business expanded its digital audience and strengthened its advertising business following the integration of its entertainment assets.

Reliance also continued work on its integrated solar manufacturing facilities, battery storage systems and green hydrogen projects during the quarter. The company said these projects remain part of its ongoing efforts to expand its clean energy business alongside its existing digital, retail and energy operations.

Delhi Police shifts Wangchuk to hospital as health worsens on Day 21 of hunger strike

New Delhi: Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike over the alleged NEET-UG examination irregularities, was forcefully shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital by the Delhi Police on Saturday saying on medical grounds.

The Delhi Police said the decision was taken on the advice of doctors and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court, which has been monitoring Wangchuk’s health amid concerns over his prolonged fast.

According to media reports, police personnel, many of them in plain clothes, arrived at the protest site at Jantar Mantar early on Saturday morning before taking Wangchuk to the hospital. A brief commotion ensued after some protesters attempted to prevent the police action, but officials said the operation was carried out with “maximum restraint”.

Many users on X posted videos of how the police in plain dress whisked away from the site covering white sheets around him. “The government cannot hide its misdeeds behind sheets and curtains; the eyes of democracy cannot be blindfolded.,” wrote Yogendra Yadav on X.

In a statement posted on X, the Delhi Police, however, said Wangchuk had been shifted for “essential medical care” following expert medical advice and the High Court’s orders. The police also appealed to the protesters to end their agitation and vacate the protest site peacefully.

“Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care. While complying with the orders of Hon’ble High Court the protesters tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued. Police, however, exercised maximum restrain and undertook the exercise safely,” they wrote on X.

The police action came a day after doctors warned that Wangchuk’s health had reached a critical stage. According to medical updates cited in media reports, he has lost nearly 9.5 kilograms since beginning his fast on June 28, while his blood pressure, blood sugar and other vital parameters have remained under close medical supervision. Doctors had warned that prolonged fasting could lead to organ damage if his condition continued to deteriorate.

Wangchuk, despite his worsening health, had reiterated on Friday that he intended to continue the fast until the proposed Parliament march on July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session. In a video message shared before being hospitalised, he said he had “lost 20 per cent of my body” but remained determined to support the students’ movement demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which has been leading the protest, alleged that Wangchuk was forcibly removed from the protest site. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke claimed he was assaulted and briefly detained by the police during the operation, while the organisation described the removal of the activist as a “national shame” in a post on X. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das called the police has kidnapped Sonam sir and their action is “comtempt of court.”

Meanwhile, three members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA)—Neha, Aameen and Manish—continued their indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. According to media reports, protesters formed a human chain around the AISA activists to prevent police from removing them. The student organisation alleged that attempts were made to end the peaceful protest, while police maintained that their actions were solely aimed at ensuring Wangchuk received necessary medical care.

CJP President Abhijit Dipke announced that he will be on indefinite hunger strike following the police action. “If they think that taking Sonam Sir away will end this movement, they are mistaken. We will remain here, and will march to Parliament on July 20.” He further said, “Until now, we were demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, but after this despicable act, we will now demand the resignation of Narendra Modi.”

Soon after Wangchuk was shifted to hospital, his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, questioned the police action and objected to any medical treatment being administered without her consent. Speaking to reporters, she said Wangchuk had been in a stable condition the previous day and insisted that no treatment should begin without the family’s approval.

Wangchuk and several students have been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the CJP-led agitation demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and broader concerns over examination irregularities.

The Delhi High Court had earlier directed authorities to conduct daily medical assessments of Wangchuk and ensure that any necessary medical intervention was provided without delay, observing that every citizen’s life is precious and must be protected.
