Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu’s dream run at the Japan Open continued as she reached the final of the tournament.
Her Chinese opponent, Chen Yufei, retired from the match due to a hamstring injury. At the time of her withdrawal, Sindhu was leading 21-19, 15-10.
This is the first time Sindhu has reached the final of the Japan Open in her career. She will face the winner of the semi-final between Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi and Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani.
The two-time Olympic medallist had advanced to the semi-finals after home favourite and former world champion Nozomi Okuhara withdrew from their quarter-final match.
Sindhu is the last remaining Indian shuttler in the tournament.
Earlier, Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty suffered defeats in their respective opening-round matches, while the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrew from the tournament due to injury during their opening match.
India’s doubles campaign also ended in the pre-quarterfinals after Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost their mixed doubles match.
