INS Malvan commissioned, boosts Indian Navy’s ASW capability

New Delhi: INS Malvan, the second indigenously designed and built Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), was commissioned into the Indian Navy at Karwar on Wednesday, strengthening the country’s anti-submarine warfare and coastal defence capabilities.

The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. Senior naval officers, representatives of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), veterans, and other distinguished guests also attended the event.

INS Malvan is the second of eight Mahe-class ASW-SWCs being built by CSL in Kochi. It is also the sixth of 16 ASW-SWCs to be commissioned into the Indian Navy, according to an official statement.

With more than 80% indigenous content, the warship supports the Indian government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and reflects the country’s growing self-reliance in naval design, equipment, system integration and defence shipbuilding.

Named after the historic coastal town of Malvan in Maharashtra, the vessel honours the maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It also carries forward the legacy of its predecessor, an Indian Navy inshore minesweeper that remained in service until 2003.

INS Malvan is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare operations, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare. The Indian Navy said the vessel will strengthen coastal defence, littoral security and maritime domain awareness.

The ship’s crest features the Bagh Nakha (Tiger’s Claw), symbolising bravery, agility, warfare tactics and audacity. Its motto, Silent Claws, reflects the vessel’s stealth, lethality and ability to strike swiftly.

Addressing the gathering, Singh underlined the importance of safeguarding sea lines of communication to ensure uninterrupted maritime trade amid global uncertainties.

He praised the Indian Navy’s progress under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and highlighted the ship’s more than 80% indigenous content.

He also said the Navy’s practice of embedding officers in the shipbuilding process could help accelerate self-reliance across the wider defence ecosystem. Reaffirming the vision of tri-service integration, he called for seamless coordination among the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force to strengthen India’s preparedness for future conflicts.

Odisha has 8,063 functional cooperative societies: Home Minister Amit Shah

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has 8,063 functional cooperative societies out of a total of 8,667 registered societies, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday in a written reply.

Citing data from the National Cooperative Database as of July 15, Shah said the state continues to strengthen its cooperative network through several central initiatives aimed at improving transparency, technology adoption and financial sustainability.

The minister said the Centre launched the Central Sector Project for Computerization of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in 2022. The project initially covered 63,000 PACS with a financial outlay of Rs 2,516 crore. It has since been expanded to include 79,630 PACS with a revised outlay of Rs 2,925.39 crore, according to an official statement.

The project aims to bring all functional PACS onto a common Enterprise Resource Planning-based national software platform. It also connects PACS with NABARD through State Cooperative Banks and District Central Cooperative Banks.

Odisha joined the project in 2025. A total of 4,240 PACS have been sanctioned under the computerisation programme in the state. The Centre has provided financial assistance of Rs 25.07 crore to Odisha under the project. This includes Rs 18.07 crore during the 2025-26 financial year and Rs 7 crore during 2026-27.

Shah also informed the House that the National Cooperative Development Corporation had cumulatively disbursed Rs 3,352.03 crore for the development of Odisha’s cooperative sector as of June 30.

The minister further said the Ministry of Cooperation has introduced several initiatives since its formation on July 6, 2021, to achieve the vision of “Sahakar-se-Samriddhi”. These measures focus on making primary cooperatives more transparent and economically viable, strengthening urban and rural cooperative banks, providing tax relief to cooperative societies, reviving cooperative sugar mills, promoting information technology, creating the National Cooperative Database, framing a National Cooperation Policy and establishing Tribhuvan Sahkari University.

The ministry has also encouraged Primary Agricultural Credit Societies, dairy cooperatives and fisheries cooperatives to function as multipurpose cooperative societies. The move is intended to diversify their activities, improve financial sustainability and reduce the risk of closure.

KIMS doctors remove LED bulb from four-year-old’s lung without open surgery

Bhubaneswar: Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, have successfully removed a small metallic LED bulb lodged deep inside the lung of a four-year-old girl without performing open surgery, giving the child a new lease of life through a minimally invasive procedure.

The young patient had accidentally inhaled the LED bulb, which travelled deep into her right lung. She was brought to KIMS eight days later with a persistent cough after attempts to remove the object using standard scope procedures at another hospital were unsuccessful, as the bulb was lodged beyond reach.

A team of ENT specialists at KIMS undertook the complex procedure and safely extracted the foreign object using a hybrid minimally invasive technique. The child recovered well, ate normally within a few hours of the procedure, and was discharged in stable condition, KIIT said in a press release.

The procedure was led by Dr. Pradipt Ranjan Sahoo, Professor, ENT & Head-Neck Surgery, and Dr. Manisha Mallick, Assistant Professor, ENT & Head-Neck Surgery. They were assisted by Dr. Basant Kumar Behera from the Department of Anaesthesiology and Dr. Swadip Mishra from the Department of Respiratory Medicine.

According to the hospital, inhalation of foreign objects such as button cells, beads and small bulbs is relatively common among young children and can lead to serious complications. Removing such objects becomes particularly challenging when they become lodged deep inside the lungs, often requiring major surgery.

A detailed CT scan confirmed that the metallic LED bulb was stuck in the lower part of the girl’s right lung in a narrow airway branch, making conventional removal difficult.

Instead of opting for open surgery, the multidisciplinary team employed a combined approach with rigid and flexible bronchoscopy.

The rigid bronchoscope kept the airway open and stable, while the flexible bronchoscope enabled doctors to accurately locate and manoeuvre around the deeply lodged object.

The hybrid technique allowed the team to safely remove the bulb without complications.

Paying homage at Rama Devi’s statue near the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the CM said her contributions to India’s freedom movement, social reform and women’s empowerment remain unparalleled.

He said Rama Devi dedicated her life to the service of the people and embodied the values of selfless sacrifice.

Her patriotism and commitment to social welfare, he added, would continue to motivate people to build a strong society and a prosperous nation.

Several dignitaries joined CM Majhi in paying their respects during the commemorative event. The gathering offered floral tributes and remembered Rama Devi’s enduring contribution to the freedom struggle, social service and the empowerment of women in Odisha.

CJP rejects Nadda’s invitation, insists on public talks as Jantar Mantar protest continues

New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday rejected an invitation to meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda at his residence, insisting that any dialogue with the government should take place either at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where its protest is underway, or at a neutral venue nearby.

Addressing reporters at the protest site, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had once again been approached by the police, who conveyed that Nadda wished to hold discussions with the protesters.

“This morning, the police reached out to us again and informed us that J.P. Nadda wanted to speak with us. They invited us to his residence, but we categorically declined. We are not going to anyone’s house or office. A ‘janata darbar’ is being held here, and if the ministers want to talk, they should come to the people,” Das said.

He, however, said the party remained open to dialogue if the government was serious about addressing its demands. “If there are security concerns about ministers visiting Jantar Mantar, we are willing to meet at a neutral venue such as the Constitution Club near the protest site. But the government must first clarify whether it genuinely intends to engage with us. There is no point in holding meaningless discussions,” he added.

The remarks came as the CJP’s indefinite protest entered another day, with thousands of students and supporters continuing their sit-in at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. In a post on X, the party reiterated that it would not end the protest until Pradhan stepped down.

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka claimed the movement was gaining momentum and warned that “millions more” would join if the government failed to respond to the protesters’ demands.

Amid escalating tensions, the Ministry of Home Affairs ordered the deployment of 20 additional companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Delhi, with personnel being moved from West Bengal to reinforce security arrangements.

Heavy security remained in place across central Delhi, particularly around Parliament House and Rafi Marg, while Delhi Police continued extensive barricading following Monday’s confrontation between protesters and security personnel.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also closed 16 Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, ITO, Khan Market, Janpath and Lok Kalyan Marg, citing security reasons. While train interchange facilities remained available at select stations, entry and exit were suspended until further notice.

Criticising the closures, Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said shutting Metro stations would not deter the youth. “Even if all Metro stations are closed, young people will walk to join the protest. The more the government tries to suppress the movement, the stronger it will become,” he said during a joint press conference with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The protest also found support outside Delhi. Students of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in Varanasi announced solidarity demonstrations demanding Pradhan’s resignation, while police in Patna used tear gas and water cannons to disperse AISA workers protesting over the alleged NEET paper leak. Solidarity protest marches have also been carried out in many other places across the country following the police crackdown of protesters in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the health condition of 21-year-old Sakshi, who was critically injured during Monday’s police action, showed significant improvement. Doctors at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital said she had been taken off ventilator support, was conscious, breathing on her own and responding appropriately to commands. MRI scans of her brain and spine were reported to be normal, and doctors said her condition was steadily improving under close medical supervision.

DMK MPs A. Raja, Dayanidhi Maran and Jagathrakshakan visited RML Hospital to enquire about the condition of injured students. Raja alleged that hospital authorities were under pressure from the Centre to restrict access to patients without the approval of the Union Health Minister.

In a statement issued later in the day, the CJP appealed to activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike, saying his health was too important to be put at further risk. The party assured Wangchuk that his sacrifice had inspired an entire generation and vowed to continue the agitation peacefully until its demands were met. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke urged Wangchuk to prioritise his health, saying the movement would carry forward with renewed determination.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also extended support to Wangchuk’s agitation, urging political parties and citizens across the country to stand behind the protest. He noted that Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike for more than three weeks and said the movement had become a national cause.

Meanwhile, Parliament witnessed fresh political sparring over the NEET controversy. The government informed the Lok Sabha that it was ready for a detailed discussion on the alleged paper leak. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reportedly met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after the government expressed its willingness to hold a debate. However, Opposition parties maintained that any discussion must also address their demand for Pradhan’s resignation.

Delhi Police, meanwhile, continued its investigation into Monday’s violence. Six FIRs have been registered at different police stations over alleged violence, vandalism and other offences during the Parliament march. Police said they were also probing what they described as a possible larger criminal conspiracy behind the unrest.

Separately, an FIR has been registered over a video purportedly showing a Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel being chased and assaulted by a group of protesters during Monday’s march.

Despite the heavy security presence and continuing police action, CJP leaders said the protest at Jantar Mantar would continue until the government accepted their demands, maintaining that they remained open to talks provided they took place in public or at a mutually agreed neutral venue.

No compromise on security during Bahuda Yatra, says CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday directed officials to ensure that there is no compromise on law and order and security arrangements during the upcoming Bahuda Yatra of Lord Jagannath on July 24, while stressing the need for scientific crowd management and real-time information sharing to ensure the safety of devotees.

Reviewing the preparations at Lok Seva Bhawan, the Chief Minister advised officials to place greater emphasis on crowd management and seamless information flow. He also appealed to devotees visiting Puri to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the administration and the police to facilitate the smooth conduct of the festival.

According to officials, all rituals associated with the annual Rath Yatra have so far been conducted smoothly despite continuous rainfall, adverse weather conditions and humid weather. The Chief Minister appreciated the dedication of servitors, officials and employees for ensuring the successful conduct of the festival and thanked them for their teamwork and commitment in serving Lord Jagannath and the devotees.

Majhi noted that the district administration and police have remained on high alert throughout the festival and have closely monitored key events such as Pahandi, chariot pulling, Dakshini Moda and Adapa Mandap darshan. Senior officers have remained present on the ground to supervise the arrangements at every stage, he said.

During the review meeting, the Chief Minister suggested that information generated through CCTV surveillance should be integrated with the Integrated Command and Control Centre and shared instantly with field officials so that congestion and other issues can be addressed without delay.

With Bahuda Yatra, Suna Besha and Niladri Bije still to be held, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that all remaining rituals are conducted smoothly and without disruption.

Expressing grief over the deaths of two devotees due to health-related issues during this year’s Rath Yatra, Majhi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He noted that the state government had already announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of the deceased devotees.

During the meeting, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee briefed the Chief Minister on the overall management of the Rath Yatra. Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, Director General of Fire Services Sudhanshu Sarangi and Additional Director General of Police (Modernisation) Soumendra Priyadarshi also presented details of the security and policing arrangements for the remaining phases of the festival.

The review meeting was attended by Law and Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, Chief Minister’s Advisor Prakash Mishra, Chief Secretary Anu Garg, Development Commissioner D.K. Singh and other senior officials, who discussed preparations for Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha.
