Minister Mandaviya urges citizens to spend one hour on sports and fitness

New Delhi: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday urged citizens to dedicate at least one hour to sports and physical activity as India observed National Sports Day.

The occasion marked the 121st birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. A special sporting event was organised at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium at India Gate in New Delhi in the presence of Mandaviya and Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal.

This year’s celebrations focused on the nationwide ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ initiative. The campaign encourages citizens, particularly young people, to spend at least one hour playing sports or engaging in physical activity.

The programme began with Mandaviya and Meghwal paying floral tribute to Major Dhyan Chand by garlanding his statue. Hundreds of participants joined the celebrations from 8 am and took part in sporting and fitness activities.

Mandaviya said the initiative was aimed at strengthening the Fit India Movement and encouraging people to make sports part of their daily lives. He said lakhs of young people across the country had participated by coming out to play for an hour in streets and on playgrounds.

He also stressed that a fit population and healthy society were essential to building a prosperous nation. He urged people to spend one hour every week on the playing field and give greater attention to their health.

Meghwal extended National Sports Day greetings and highlighted the role of regular sports and physical activity in maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Recalling his own involvement in sports, Meghwal said he had played kabaddi and football and continued to play badminton almost every day. He described his personal motto as ‘morning music and evening play’ and said regular participation in sports helped people remain physically fit, healthy and free from mental stress.

Meghwal also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to dedicate one hour to sports on National Sports Day was important for the country. He linked the initiative with the ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ campaign and said it could contribute to the goal of building a developed nation.

The celebrations featured cricket, football and tug of war to promote sports participation, teamwork and an active lifestyle.

A cricket competition was organised between four teams – Ministry XI, SAI XI, Media XI and Influencers XI. Ministry XI, led by Mandaviya and comprising Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao and other ministry officials, secured a convincing victory over Media XI in the opening match.

The Influencers XI included prominent social media influencers and Fit India Ambassadors.

The National Sports Day celebrations reaffirmed the government’s focus on promoting sports, fitness and active living across the country while honouring the enduring legacy of Major Dhyan Chand.

CM Majhi calls for zero tolerance against crime, stronger smart policing

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday reviewed the state’s law and order situation, internal security and Smart Policing system at the state-level DGP and IGP Conference held at the State Police Headquarters.

Majhi called for dedicated efforts to build a “Safe Odisha, Strong Odisha and Prosperous Odisha” while stressing police reforms and modernisation.

The CM directed the police to adopt a strict zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women, organised crime and anti-social elements. He also set a target to increase the conviction rate in crimes against women from the current 40% to at least 75%.

Majhi called for completely dismantling the core syndicates and financial supply chains involved in drug trafficking. He said concerted efforts should be made to achieve the goal of a Drug-Free Odisha by 2029.

Ahead of the upcoming festival season, Majhi directed the police to take strict action against illegal forced extortion and dada giri.

He stressed that criminals should feel unnerved when they see the police, while innocent citizens should not feel intimidated. He directed police personnel to treat ordinary citizens visiting police stations with sympathy and sensitivity.

For the security of Odisha’s 575-km-long coastline, the CM directed the deployment of a Command and Control Centre, drones, trawlers, interceptor boats, ATVs and ex-servicemen.

He also called for modern digital surveillance, close monitoring of the dark web and large-scale public awareness campaigns to curb cyber fraud.

The intelligence system will be strengthened through the National Intelligence Grid and Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems. A dedicated investigation fund was also approved for the modernisation of police stations.

Majhi emphasised the need to make crime investigation more professional, modern and technology-driven. He further called for the police system to function in a completely corruption-free, transparent and dedicated manner.

Nepal flash floods: Death toll reaches 586 as China warns of fresh flood threat from unstable lake

New Delhi, August 29: The death toll from the devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to at least 586, while 2,478 people remain missing, as rescue teams race to reach survivors and authorities confront the threat of another flood from a newly formed lake.

Nepal has confirmed 579 deaths and 1,924 missing people, while Chinese authorities have reported seven deaths and 554 missing in Tibet, according to the latest figures available on Saturday. The combined number of missing people stands at 2,478. The figures remain fluid as rescue teams continue to reach areas that were cut off by mud, debris and damaged infrastructure.

The immediate concern is now a potential secondary disaster. China has warned Nepal that a debris-dammed lake formed after the initial catastrophe could breach its banks, with officials monitoring changes in the lake and warning downstream communities to remain alert. Rescue operations were briefly suspended after the lake began overflowing, although search efforts have since resumed.

The lake formed after a massive ice-and-rock collapse in the Himalayas sent debris into the river system near the Nepal-China border. The resulting surge swept through communities in Nepal, particularly along the Lhende Khola and Trishuli river systems, destroying roads, bridges, homes and other infrastructure.

Chinese state media has shown extensive destruction around Gyirong Port in Tibet, a key border crossing between Nepal and China. Rescue teams reaching the area reported thick layers of mud and debris, while satellite imagery indicated that parts of the border complex had been severely damaged.

The scale of the disaster has made rescue operations particularly difficult. Roads and bridges have been washed away, communication networks disrupted and large areas remain inaccessible except by helicopter. More than 3,700 people have been rescued in Nepal, while authorities continue searching for thousands of people whose whereabouts remain unknown.

A large number of foreign nationals are also among those missing. Nepalese authorities have reported 517 missing foreigners, while Chinese officials have reported another 260 missing foreigners in Tibet, taking the combined figure to at least 777. The missing include tourists, pilgrims and workers from several countries.

India has intensified its humanitarian and consular response. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 320 Indian nationals in Nepal remained uncontactable or missing as of Friday, while around 100 people of Indian origin holding other nationalities were also uncontactable. Sixty-three Indians working at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project have been rescued, while 96 Indians stranded on the Chinese side have crossed into Nepal.

India has also sent emergency relief supplies to Nepal. More than 47 tonnes had been dispatched in two flights by Friday, with a third flight carrying around 13 tonnes of additional supplies, including generators, food, water-purification tablets and medicines. India has also deployed an 11-member medical and tunnel-rescue team as part of the assistance.

International relief efforts are expanding as the humanitarian situation worsens. The United Nations has said tens of thousands of households need food and emergency drinking water. The European Union, Canada, the United States and other countries have announced financial or material assistance for Nepal.

The disaster, believed to have been triggered by a massive glacial collapse and subsequent landslide, has left authorities dealing with both the immediate humanitarian crisis and the continuing threat posed by unstable mountain terrain and newly formed water bodies.

With another potential flood threatening downstream areas, authorities in Nepal and China remain on high alert as rescue teams continue the search for survivors and missing people.

FIH Hockey World Cup: India finishes eighth

New Delhi: India finished eighth at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after Belgium edged them 4-3 on penalties in a classification match at Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium, on Friday.

The match ended 3-3 after regulation time, with India scoring in the final seconds to force the shootout. Belgium eventually held their nerve to secure seventh place, according to reports.

Abhishek Nain gave India an early lead in the sixth minute after Manpreet Singh created the opening. Belgium responded through Roman Duvekot in the 22nd minute before Hugo Labouchere converted a penalty corner a minute later.

India levelled soon after the half-time break when captain Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner in the 31st minute.

Belgium appeared to regain the lead through a penalty corner in the third quarter, but the goal was disallowed after India successfully referred the decision.

The hosts eventually moved ahead again in the final quarter. Arthur de Kerpel scored after the ball deflected off an Indian defender and bounced beyond goalkeeper Mohith.

India then made a late tactical push by replacing goalkeeper Karkera with an additional outfield player. The move produced results as India won a penalty corner with just 26 seconds remaining.

Harmanpreet converted once again to make it 3-3 and send the match into a shootout. Belgium, however, finished stronger to claim the victory.

Despite the eighth-place finish, Harmanpreet ended the tournament among the leading scorers. His eight goals put him level with Argentina’s Tomás Domene at the top of the scoring chart with one day of the competition remaining.

Odisha signs six partnerships to strengthen digital agriculture and farmer livelihoods

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has entered into six partnerships with the Department of Posts, Odisha Circle, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics and the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF).

The partnerships aim to strengthen digital agriculture, seed systems, climate resilience, nutrition and farmer livelihoods across the state.

The MoUs were signed by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Agriculture Sachin Ramchandra Jadha, Chief Postmaster General Nirmaljeet Singh, Director of Agriculture Shubham Saxena and Director of Horticulture Kalunge Gorakh Waman were also present.

Singh Deo said the six MoUs mark a major step in transforming Odisha’s agricultural sector. He highlighted the role of Gramin Dak Sevaks in expanding access to digital agricultural services.

Under the partnership with the Department of Posts, Odisha Circle, Gramin Dak Sevaks will support Farmer Registry enrolment and Farmer ID generation. They will also assist with CM KISAN registration, PM KISAN e-KYC and NPCI/Aadhaar seeding.

The initiative will improve farmer registration and authentication while making government schemes more accessible in rural and remote areas.

The four RKVY-DPR projects with ICRISAT will focus on strengthening seed systems for pulses and oilseeds. The projects will also support chickpea seed production, speed breeding and the development of improved and climate-resilient varieties.

The collaboration aims to improve the availability of quality seeds, promote crop diversification and increase farm productivity. It will also help farmers cope with climate variability.

The partnership with MSSRF will implement a three-year Farming System for Nutrition project in Nayagarh. The project will cover 3,000 small and marginal farmers.

It will integrate biofortified crops, pulses, vegetables, backyard poultry and aquaculture. The project will also promote seed banks, nutrition gardens and community processing units.

The initiative aims to improve the production of nutrient-rich crops, increase farmer incomes, promote dietary diversity and strengthen household nutrition.

The Odisha government said the partnerships represent three key areas of agricultural transformation: digital access, productivity and climate resilience, and nutrition and livelihood security.

The government emphasised that the success of these initiatives will ultimately be measured by tangible improvements in farmer incomes and livelihoods.
