Bridgetown (Barbados): Cricket legend and former West Indies captain Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, passed away at his residence in Barbados on Friday. He was 89, just days short of his 90th birthday. His death was confirmed by his son, Daniel.
Sir Garfield, popularly known as Sir Gary Sobers, played a transformative role in establishing West Indies as a dominant force in international cricket. His remarkable achievements with both bat and ball earned him worldwide admiration and left an enduring impact on the game.
One of the most celebrated milestones of his illustrious career came in 1968, when he became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket while representing Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan—an achievement that remains one of cricket’s most iconic moments.
Between 1954 and 1974, Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches, amassing 8,032 runs at an impressive average of 57.78, including 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His extraordinary all-round ability also made him one of the most influential players the sport has ever produced.
In recognition of his contribution to world cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has presented the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy to the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year since 2004, honouring excellence in international cricket.
With his passing, world cricket bids farewell to a sporting giant whose records, versatility and influence transcended generations, ensuring that his legacy will remain an integral part of the game’s rich history.
