Mumbai: The Centre has given its nod for the creation of a premium marina facility in Mumbai Harbour, with the project carrying an estimated outlay of Rs887 crore. The initiative is expected to boost coastal shipping, enhance maritime tourism and drive waterfront-focused urban development in Mumbai.
Named the ‘Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina’, the project has received approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The clearance aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing globally competitive tourism infrastructure while strengthening the country’s maritime and blue economy, according to an official statement.
Speaking on the development, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that this approval of the ‘Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina’ marked an important step in the ministry’s efforts to strengthen coastal shipping and maritime tourism.
He added that the project would create world-class infrastructure, open the waterfront for public use, encourage private investment, and generate new employment opportunities.
The marina will be developed through a hybrid model. Under this structure, the Mumbai Port Authority will invest around Rs470 crore to build the essential marina infrastructure on an EPC basis, while a private developer will be responsible for onshore amenities, with an expected investment of Rs417 crore. Approval for the port authority’s share has already been granted, tenders have been issued, and bids are scheduled to close on December 25.
The minister further stated that the project would strengthen maritime tourism, attract private investment, and create over 2,000 jobs across allied sectors, while opening new opportunities in coastal and blue economy activities.”
Spread across nearly 12 hectares of water area, the marina is designed to accommodate 424 yachts, each measuring up to 30 metres. The planned marine infrastructure includes an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons, and gangways, all aimed at ensuring smooth, safe and efficient yacht operations.
