New Delhi: The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur to collaborate on advanced telecom research and global standardisation efforts.

The agreement aims to strengthen India’s role in next-generation communication technologies and enhance its participation in international standard-setting platforms.

The MoU was signed at IIT Kharagpur by Kamal Kumar Agarwal, DDG (FA), TEC, DoT, and Prof. Debdeep Mukhopadhyay, Associate Dean (R&D), IIT Kharagpur. The signing took place in the presence of IIT Kharagpur Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty and other senior officials.

The partnership creates a formal framework for joint studies, research projects, and technical contributions in emerging telecom technologies, according to an official statement.

Under the agreement, both institutions will work on exploring 6G architecture and enabling technologies. The collaboration will support research, pre-standardisation, and standardisation activities in global forums such as the International Telecommunication Union.

The partnership will also focus on developing India-specific standards for future networks. These include optical communication systems, non-terrestrial networks, and satellite-based connectivity.

The two sides will jointly undertake research and development in AI-enabled telecom systems. This includes work on electromagnetic field monitoring solutions and smart IoT-based sensor development.

Officials said the collaboration will support public safety frameworks and strengthen regulatory compliance through advanced monitoring tools.
