Bhubaneswar: Ganjam development projects gained momentum on Friday as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced major investments during the Gopalpur Beach Festival’s valedictory ceremony.
Addressing a gathering, Majhi said the State government will expand and upgrade Gopalpur Port for Rs6,554 crore. The project will raise the port’s cargo handling capacity to 50 million metric tonnes. It will also create jobs for nearly 5,000 youths.
The CM said the port expansion forms a key pillar of Odisha’s industrial strategy. He stressed that coastal infrastructure plays a crucial role in economic growth and employment.
Majhi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on setting up a mega port at Bahuda in Ganjam district. The project will involve an investment of Rs21,500 crore. He said the port will further strengthen Odisha’s port-led economy.
During the event, the CM inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several public-oriented development projects in the district. The government launched projects worth more than Rs492 crore.
Majhi also inaugurated 15 completed projects valued at Rs50 crore. He also laid foundation stones for 64 new projects worth Rs442 crore. These projects cover roads, drinking water, urban infrastructure, and public services.
Majhi announced an allocation of Rs32 crore for the beautification of Gopalpur Beach. He said the initiative will boost tourism and improve facilities for visitors.
Highlighting Odisha’s cultural legacy, the CM announced the revival of the Upendra Bhanja Chair at Berhampur University. The chair honours Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja, a towering figure in Odia literature.
Majhi also declared that the birth anniversary of Upendra Bhanja will be observed as a State-level festival. He said the decision aims to preserve literary heritage and inspire young minds.
Speaking on the State’s long-term vision, the CM said Odisha aims to become a developed and prosperous State by 2036. In a post on X, he called for public participation and collective effort.

Majhi said Ganjam holds a proud place in Odisha’s maritime history. He described the Gopalpur Beach Festival as a reflection of the State’s heritage and identity.
The CM also took part in the sacred ‘Samudra Aarti’ on the beach. He said the ritual connects spirituality, culture, and nature.
