Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday said the India–US trade agreement would give a new identity to the State’s marine food economy. He said the deal would open fresh opportunities for shrimp, fish, and other marine food exporters from coastal Odisha.
The CM said the reduction in tariffs would raise demand for Odisha’s seafood in the US market. He added that higher exports would increase the incomes of fishermen and aquaculture farmers. He also said the move would help strengthen the State’s blue economy.
Under the trade agreement, the US has reduced reciprocal tariffs on Indian exports from 25% to 18%. Industry experts believe the lower tariffs will make Indian seafood more competitive in the American market.
Exporters expect stronger demand for Indian shrimp and other marine products. The tariff cut follows months of trade uncertainty that had affected export orders to the US.
The seafood sector remains a key part of India’s foreign trade. The US continues to be one of the largest markets for Indian seafood, especially frozen shrimp. Analysts say better pricing may revive orders and improve margins for processors.
Majhi also said the agreement would benefit Odisha’s textile sector. In a post on X, he said handloom products and ready-made garments from the State would gain better access to global markets.

Lower tariffs are expected to make exports easier for weavers and artisans. Officials believe Odisha’s traditional textiles could see higher global demand and create new livelihood opportunities.
