Kolkata: South Africa clinched a dramatic 30-run victory over India in the first Test, wrapping up the match within three days, thanks to Simon Harmer’s outstanding bowling display. Harmer claimed eight wickets across both innings, including a decisive 4-30 in India’s first outing, to put the hosts firmly in control.

Chasing a modest target of 124, India faltered and were bundled out for just 93. The visitors were without captain Shubman Gill, who was hospitalised with a neck injury sustained on Saturday.

Harmer struck crucial blows in the second session of Day 3, including a sharp caught-and-bowled dismissal of Rishabh Pant for two. Spinner Keshav Maharaj then delivered the final strike, picking up two wickets in two balls to seal the win and hand the reigning World Test Champions a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Washington Sundar attempted to stabilise India’s chase with a gritty 31 before falling to Aiden Markram’s off-spin. Axar Patel injected brief hope by smashing two sixes off Maharaj, but his brisk 26 off 17 ended soon after.

Earlier, Marco Jansen removed both Indian openers before lunch, leaving the visitors reeling at 10-3 in Gill’s absence.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma anchored the second innings with a resilient, unbeaten 55. Starting the day at 29*, Bavuma frustrated the Indian bowlers with a valuable 44-run eighth-wicket stand alongside Corbin Bosch, who contributed 25. Jasprit Bumrah eventually broke the partnership, while Mohammed Siraj wrapped up the innings by dismissing Harmer (7) and Maharaj (0) in quick succession. Ravindra Jadeja finished with figures of 4-50.

South Africa had earlier posted 159 on Day 1 after opting to bat first, and restricted India to 189 on Day 2, keeping the deficit to just 30 before staging their comeback.

The second Test begins on Saturday in Guwahati.
