Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of three Odia migrant workers – Sumitra Juang, Deepanjali Juang, and Rita Juang – who lost their lives in the ammonia gas leak in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, have reached Bhubaneswar.
Labour Commissioner Indramani Tripathy, Special Secretary Madhumita Nayak, and Additional Labour Commissioner Madan Mohan Paik were present at Biju Patnaik International Airport to pay their last respects to the deceased and oversee the repatriation.
The Labour Commissioner, in a post on X, said the Odisha government has already launched a comprehensive operation to support the victims’ families during this difficult period.
So far, 12 Odia migrant workers have lost their lives due to the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district. Five others are still battling for their lives at various hospitals in Chennai.
The gas leak was reported on June 21.
“Odisha completes dignified shifting of mortal remains of 11 migrant workers who died in the Thiruvallur ammonia gas leak on June 21. All mortal remains brought back to Keonjhar in four phases from June 23-26 via flights and Mahaprayan hearses, under CM Mohan Charan Majhi’s direct orders. On June 26, Labour Commissioner Indramani Tripathy received the final three victims,” the commissioner added.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government has safely brought back 62 Odia migrant workers from Chennai by train. All necessary arrangements for their return were made by the government.
The workers arrived at Bhubaneswar Railway Station on Saturday after departing from Chennai Railway Station on Friday.
It is understood that special arrangements have been made to transport all the workers by bus from Bhubaneswar to their respective villages.
