Kolkata: Scotland and Zimbabwe registered emphatic victories in their respective Group matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Monday, with dominant all-round performances that underlined their credentials in the tournament.
At Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Scotland spoiled Italy’s maiden T20 World Cup appearance with a commanding 73-run win in Group C. George Munsey’s blistering 84 off 54 balls laid the foundation for Scotland’s imposing total of 207 for 4, the highest ever by an Associate team in a men’s T20 World Cup.
Munsey, who struck eight boundaries and four sixes, added 126 runs for the opening stand with Michael Jones, giving Scotland early momentum. Brandon McMullen and Michael Leask provided late acceleration, with Leask hammering 22 runs off just five balls at the death.
Italy’s challenge was further dented when captain Wayne Madsen suffered a shoulder dislocation early in the match and was unable to bat. They showed brief resistance through the Manenti brothers. Ben Manenti scored a brisk 52 off 29 balls, while Harry Manenti contributed valuable runs during a fourth-wicket partnership that momentarily kept Italy in the contest.
However, Michael Leask turned the match decisively with the ball, returning career-best figures of 4 for 17. Italy were eventually bowled out for 134, with Leask’s all-round effort sealing Scotland’s first points of the campaign after their earlier loss to West Indies.
In Group B action at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo, Zimbabwe marked their return to the T20 World Cup with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Oman. Zimbabwe’s towering pace trio of Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Brad Evans dismantled Oman’s batting lineup, sharing nine wickets to restrict them to 103 all out.
Muzarabani led the attack with three wickets in the powerplay, while Ngarava and Evans maintained relentless pressure through the middle and death overs. Oman’s innings never recovered from early blows, despite Vinayak Shukla’s 28 and Sufyan Mehmood’s patient 25.
Chasing a modest target, Zimbabwe lost two early wickets but were steadied by a composed partnership between Brian Bennett and veteran Brendan Taylor. Bennett top-scored with an unbeaten 48, displaying maturity beyond his years, while Taylor provided calm assurance in the middle overs. The pair ensured there were no further hiccups as Zimbabwe reached the target in just 13.3 overs, sealing victory with 6.3 overs to spare.
The wins gave Scotland and Zimbabwe crucial momentum in their respective groups, while Italy and Oman were left searching for answers after difficult outings against disciplined opponents.
South Africa Vs Canada: South Africa also began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on a winning note with a commanding 57-run victory over Canada in a Group D match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Put in to bat, the Proteas rode on captain Aiden Markram’s fluent 59 and brisk contributions from Ryan Rickelton, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs to post a formidable 213 for 4 in their 20 overs. Canada’s chase was anchored by Navneet Dhaliwal’s fighting 64, but regular wickets stalled their momentum as they finished on 156 for 8. Lungi Ngidi led South Africa’s bowling effort with a four-wicket haul, ensuring a comfortable win for the former champions.
Brief Scores: South Africa 213 for 4 (Markram 59, Miller 39*, Tristan Stubbs 34; Ansh Patel 3-31) beat Canada 156 for 8 (Navneet Dhaliwal 64, Harsh Thacker 33; Ngidi 4-31) by 57 runs
