New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Thursday addressed concerns about the India-US Trade Deal, affirming that it fully protects Indian farmers, particularly in the farm and dairy sectors.

Speaking to the media in Delhi, he said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, the agreement sets a new standard for diplomacy and development, with farmers’ welfare as a non-negotiable priority.

Chouhan clarified that the government safeguards staple grains, fruits, major crops, millets, and dairy products, and foreign competition will not threaten domestic agriculture. He stressed that both small and large farmers receive full protection under the deal, which aims to create new opportunities rather than impose risks.

Addressing concerns about India’s large agricultural population, the minister assured that the government will manage market access for foreign goods carefully, preventing sudden disruptions to domestic farmers. He also pointed out that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has already clarified in Parliament the facts regarding recent remarks by the US treasury secretary on American farm products.

Chouhan highlighted the agreement’s export potential. India currently exports rice to multiple countries, including the US, with recent shipments valued at approximately Rs63,000 crore. He explained that reduced tariffs will boost rice, spices, and textile exports, supporting millions of cotton farmers. He reiterated that the deal serves India’s interests and opens new avenues for farmers despite circulating misinformation, according to an official statement.

Regarding the opposition’s request for a detailed explanation of the trade deal in Parliament, the minister said that the government will share all details in due course. He emphasized that the overarching principle remains: the government fully protects Indian farmers’ interests.

Chouhan underscored the importance of clear communication to prevent confusion among farmers. “Farmers are our Annadata, the providers of life. Their welfare is the nation’s welfare, and their interests are absolutely secure,” he said, adding that supporting farmers remains central to the government’s mission.
