New Delhi: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval held high-level meetings in Ottawa during his visit to Canada from February 6 to 7, as part of the ongoing bilateral security dialogue between the two countries.
On February 7, Doval met Nathalie Drouin, Deputy Clerk and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the prime minister of Canada. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation across key national security and law enforcement domains, th External Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
Both sides acknowledged progress made on initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and security of their countries and citizens. They agreed on a shared work plan to guide bilateral cooperation on national security and law enforcement issues, with an emphasis on practical collaboration aligned with mutual priorities.
During the meeting, India and Canada agreed to establish security and law-enforcement liaison officers. The two sides also decided that their respective agencies would further build on existing working relationships.
The move is expected to streamline bilateral communication and enable timely information sharing on issues of common concern, including the illegal flow of drugs – particularly fentanyl precursors – and transnational organized criminal networks.
The discussions also covered cybersecurity cooperation. Both sides are committed to formalising collaboration on cybersecurity policy and enhancing information sharing on cyber-related issues, the statement added.
They further agreed to continue discussions on cooperation in areas such as fraud and immigration enforcement, in line with domestic laws and international obligations.
