Bhubaneswar: State Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Minister Pradeep Bal Samant has said that handicrafts and handlooms represent the “bright signature” of Odisha’s artistic heritage.
He made these remarks while attending the 68th foundation day celebration of the Odisha State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation Limited (Utkalika) in Bhubaneswar.
Speaking on the occasion, he noted that Utkalika has been instrumental in preserving traditional art forms while also providing livelihood opportunities to thousands of rural artisans.
He added that the sector plays a crucial role in women’s empowerment and in strengthening the rural economy.
On the occasion, the minister launched an Enterprise Resource Planning system and released its information booklet, aimed at modernising Utkalika’s operations. He said the digital system would enhance transparency, improve efficiency, and streamline service delivery across the organisation.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Department, Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, said Utkalika has emerged as a trusted institution over its 68-year journey.
She stated that the corporation recorded a turnover of ₹51.53 crore in the 2025–26 financial year and has set a target of ₹75 crore for 2026–27. To achieve this, the organisation is focusing on expanding marketing centres, strengthening online sales, and introducing new design innovations.
In the performance category, Keonjhar Utkalika secured first place for exceeding business targets, followed by Kalabhumi in second place and Puri Utkalika in third.
Established in 1959, Utkalika currently works with 116 primary handicrafts cooperative societies. It operates through 18 branches, including 12 within Odisha and 6 outside the state, supporting artisans and expanding market access for handmade products.
The foundation day event was attended by senior officials, cooperative representatives, and members associated with the handicrafts sector.
