South Africa levelled the five-match T20I series with a commanding 51-run victory over India in Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) on Thursday, riding on a breathtaking innings from Quinton de Kock and a disciplined bowling performance that dismantled the hosts’ top order.

Asked to bat first, de Kock unleashed a scintillating 90 from just 46 deliveries, peppered with seven towering sixes, to set the tone for South Africa’s imposing total of 213 for 4. His assault came despite a surface that initially appeared slow, but the left-hander’s early fluency forced India on the back foot almost immediately. Late acceleration from Donovan Ferreira (30 off 16) and David Miller (20 off 12) ensured the visitors crossed the 200-run mark with momentum firmly on their side.

India’s bowling lacked consistency, highlighted by Arshdeep Singh enduring a rough outing, including a seven-wide over that further helped South Africa’s charge. Though India pulled things back briefly in the middle overs, they failed to stem the late-innings flow of boundaries.

In reply, India never recovered from a disastrous start. Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav all fell inside the powerplay, leaving the chase in tatters at 32 for 3. The early breakthroughs by the South African seamers ensured India were constantly behind the rate, unable to string together the partnerships needed to challenge the target.

Tilak Varma provided the lone bright spot with a spirited 62 off 34 balls, counterattacking with clean hitting and temporary defiance. But his dismissal triggered a slide that India could not arrest, eventually bowing out for 162 in the final over.

De Kock was named Player of the Match for his match-defining knock. Speaking after the win, he acknowledged that conditions were not straightforward for new batters but credited his familiarity with Indian bowlers and surfaces. He noted that he had adjusted his approach specifically against Arshdeep Singh, who has dismissed him previously.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that his side struggled to adapt once early plans unraveled. He said that dew influenced the second innings but stressed the need for senior batters, including himself and Shubman Gill, to shoulder more responsibility at the top. He also defended the decision to push Axar Patel up the order, saying team combinations would continue to evolve during the series.

The win brings the series to 1-1, setting up an intriguing contest as both sides look to fine-tune their combinations ahead of major international commitments.
