New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chaired a meeting with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors to review India’s preparedness in light of the evolving West Asia crisis, emphasising coordinated action to ensure economic stability and uninterrupted supply of essential commodities.
The meeting, held via video conferencing, focused on assessing the potential impact of the conflict on India’s energy security, trade, and supply chains, while outlining both immediate and long-term response strategies.
Highlighting the dynamic nature of the situation, the Prime Minister said the government has been closely monitoring developments through an Inter-Ministerial Group operational since early March, which is reviewing the situation on a daily basis.
Modi, according to an official release, stressed that the government’s key priorities are to maintain economic and trade stability, ensure energy security, safeguard citizens’ interests, and strengthen industry and supply chains. He called for close coordination between the Centre and states, noting that effective implementation of decisions largely rests at the state level.
Urging states to remain vigilant, the Prime Minister directed them to ensure smooth functioning of supply chains and take strict action against hoarding and profiteering. He also emphasised the need to activate control rooms at state and district levels and maintain administrative readiness to prevent disruptions.
Special focus was laid on the agriculture sector, with Modi calling for advance planning, particularly in monitoring fertiliser availability and distribution ahead of the Kharif season. He also advised border and coastal states to remain alert to challenges related to shipping, essential supplies, and maritime operations.
The Prime Minister cautioned against the spread of misinformation and rumours, stressing the importance of timely dissemination of accurate information to prevent panic. He also urged states to take steps against online fraud and ensure public confidence by assuring adequate availability of essential commodities.
He further suggested that states with citizens in West Asia should activate helplines and establish support systems to assist affected families and ensure regular communication.
Calling for a “Team India” approach, Modi expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between the Centre and states would help the country navigate the current challenges effectively.
During the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted measures taken by the government, including ensuring LPG availability and reducing excise duty on fuel to ease the burden on citizens.
Chief Ministers, in turn, expressed confidence that the situation remains stable, with adequate availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG across states. They welcomed recent decisions such as reduction in fuel excise duty and increased allocation of commercial LPG, while reaffirming their commitment to work closely with the Centre.
