The meeting, held via video conferencing, focused on assessing the potential impact of the conflict on India’s energy security, trade, and supply chains, while outlining both immediate and long-term response strategies.

Highlighting the dynamic nature of the situation, the Prime Minister said the government has been closely monitoring developments through an Inter-Ministerial Group operational since early March, which is reviewing the situation on a daily basis.

Modi, according to an official release, stressed that the government’s key priorities are to maintain economic and trade stability, ensure energy security, safeguard citizens’ interests, and strengthen industry and supply chains. Urging states to remain vigilant, the Prime Minister directed them to ensure smooth functioning of supply chains and take strict action against hoarding and profiteering. He also emphasised the need to activate control rooms at state and district levels and maintain administrative readiness to prevent disruptions.

Special focus was laid on the agriculture sector, with Modi calling for advance planning, particularly in monitoring fertiliser availability and distribution ahead of the Kharif season. The Prime Minister cautioned against the spread of misinformation and rumours, stressing the importance of timely dissemination of accurate information to prevent panic. He further suggested that states with citizens in West Asia should activate helplines and establish support systems to assist affected families and ensure regular communication.

Calling for a “Team India” approach, Modi expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between the Centre and states would help the country navigate the current challenges effectively.

During the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted measures taken by the government, including ensuring LPG availability and reducing excise duty on fuel to ease the burden on citizens.

Chief Ministers, in turn, expressed confidence that the situation remains stable, with adequate availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG across states. Odisha Vigilance arrests irrigation engineer in DA case

Berhampur: Odisha Vigilance has arrested Panchu Behera, Assistant Engineer posted as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Daha Irrigation Sub-Division in Ganjam district, in connection with a disproportionate assets (DA) case.

Behera, according to an official statement, was taken into custody following extensive searches at multiple locations linked to him, and is being produced before the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Berhampur.

The arrest comes a day after vigilance teams carried out simultaneous raids across five premises associated with the accused, acting on search warrants issued by the court. The operation was conducted by a team comprising senior vigilance officers and personnel.

During the searches, officials uncovered assets allegedly disproportionate to Behera’s known sources of income. These include a multi-storeyed residential building in Berhampur, five valuable plots, cash amounting to ₹18.90 lakh, deposits worth around ₹90 lakh, and gold ornaments weighing 568 grams.

Investigators also detected high-value machinery, including an Ajax Argo 4300 concrete mixer reportedly worth ₹57 lakh and a Hyundai excavator valued at around ₹37 lakh. These assets, officials said, could not be satisfactorily accounted for by the accused.

Earlier, vigilance teams had searched his residence at Basant Vihar in Berhampur, a government quarter in Bhanjanagar, his office chamber, his paternal house in Polasara, and a relative’s residence in Berhampur. Cash recoveries were made from both his residential premises and official quarters.

Authorities have registered a case against Behera under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2018, at Berhampur Vigilance Police Station. Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of assets and financial transactions.

Behera had joined government service in 2011 as an Assistant Engineer and served in multiple postings across Odisha before being appointed as SDO in the irrigation division at Bhanjanagar in 2022.

The vigilance department indicated that the probe is continuing, with valuation of assets and scrutiny of financial records still in progress.

Trump praises Modi, says ‘we get things done’

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing both leaders as “people that get things done,” while expressing confidence in stronger India-US ties going forward.

In a message shared by the US Embassy in India on X, Trump said, “Our amazing relationship with India will be even stronger going forward. Prime Minister Modi and I are two people that get things done, something that cannot be said for most.”

The remarks come days after a phone conversation between the two leaders, during which they discussed the escalating situation in West Asia, including concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the call, Modi said he had a “useful exchange of views” with Trump on the evolving crisis, reiterating India’s support for de-escalation and an early restoration of peace in the region.

“Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world,” Modi said in a post on X, adding that both sides agreed to remain in touch on efforts to promote stability.

The interaction marked the first direct communication between the two leaders since the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering a wider regional conflict and raising concerns over global energy security.

The latest exchange signals continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Washington as tensions in West Asia continue to impact international trade routes and energy supplies.

Lockdown rumours false, govt urges calm amid fuel panic

New Delhi: The Centre on Friday dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown, clarifying that no such proposal is under consideration even as panic buying was reported at some petrol pumps amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said speculation about a Covid-19-like lockdown was “completely false” and urged citizens to remain calm and responsible.

“Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. Let me state this clearly, there is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India,” Puri said in a post on X.

“In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united. Attempts to spread rumours and create panic in such a situation are irresponsible and harmful,” Puri added, calling for unity and restraint during a period of global uncertainty.

The clarification comes after a surge in online discussions and search queries around a possible lockdown, triggered by misinterpretations of recent remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the impact of the West Asia conflict.

Speculation intensified following the government’s decision to convene an all-party meeting to assess the situation and its implications for the economy and supply chains.

However, officials clarified that the Prime Minister’s references to the Covid-19 period in his recent addresses to Parliament were meant to highlight how India had navigated a previous global crisis, and not to संकेत any imminent restrictions.

During his speeches in both Houses, Modi underlined the need for preparedness and unity, noting that global disruptions caused by the conflict could have long-term economic consequences. He urged citizens to remain resilient, drawing parallels with the country’s collective response during the pandemic.

The government’s clarification comes amid isolated instances of panic buying at fuel stations, driven largely by misinformation circulating on social media. Authorities have reiterated that fuel supplies remain stable and there is no cause for concern.

In another session, the minister shared India’s perspective on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), underlining its growing relevance amid global uncertainties. He noted that ongoing conflicts in West Asia have reinforced the need for resilient trade corridors and diversified supply chains.

Jaishankar also highlighted that India’s free trade agreements with the EU, European Free Trade Association members, and the UK have enhanced the strategic and economic utility of IMEC. He expressed appreciation for the broad international support and enthusiasm for advancing the connectivity initiative.

Separately, Jaishankar held talks with the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, on the sidelines of the G7 FMM.

The participation of India’s external affairs minister in this meeting underscores France’s commitment to closely aligning India, currently holding the BRICS presidency, with its G7 presidency, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

Both ministers welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s confirmation of his participation in the Évian Summit (June 15-17). In this context, the ministers underscored India’s contribution to the G7’s work, in particular on major macroeconomic imbalances and international partnerships and solidarity.

Jaishankar and Barrot also held extensive discussions on the situation in the Middle East. They agreed to continue their close coordination with a view to working jointly towards ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
