Bhubaneswar: In a landmark move towards a sustainable future, Odisha has become the first State in India to announce a Green Hydrogen Policy, firmly establishing itself as a pioneer in the country’s clean energy revolution.

A high-level meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo with members of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and other key stakeholders from the renewable energy sector.

At the meeting, Deo emphasised that the Green Hydrogen Policy will catalyse attracting significant investments in Renewable Energy across the State. He further stated that with its strong focus on green hydrogen production, the policy will position Odisha as a leading hub for clean energy innovation in India.

The State outlined a comprehensive roadmap for renewable energy growth, with priority investment in green hydrogen production, floating solar projects integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems, pumped storage projects for reliable and scalable energy storage, disaster-resilient infrastructure to future-proof the state’s energy grid, and distribution sector reforms to modernise and strengthen energy delivery.

The CII lauded Odisha’s proactive efforts in the renewable energy space. The industry body expressed confidence that the State’s Renewable Energy Policy 2022, combined with the newly announced Green Hydrogen Policy, will play a significant role in reducing industrial carbon emissions and accelerating India’s net-zero ambitions.

The initiative is expected to attract large-scale investments, strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure, and generate new employment opportunities in the clean energy sector.

The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Energy; Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma, CMD, OPTCL; and senior representatives from the Department of Energy, OPTCL, GRIDCO, TPCODL, and the CII.
